Title: Not balding, but want to become bald?
Post by: nightmar149 on August 18, 2011, 10:55:39 AM

I thought I'd introduce myself to this seemingly interesting and insightful forum.  I'm 18, and have ridiculous hair.  By ridiculous I mean extremely curly (thanks grandma), thick, dense, and puffy hair.  Until recently I've found that I liked medium-length hair; however when it gets too long it turns into a massive jewfro- except worse.  The hair expands and builds off of itself to make massive afro-wig-style hair look that is simply atrocious in my book (that only had to happen once for me to learn!).  Nowadays, I get a No. 2 shave about every month, which makes my mother go insane (she doesn't like the look), yet I love the look.  I think it adds a certain level of badass to my overall appearance.  But, a single month after a No. 2 shave I get the matted-esque style dense hair again, which is frankly a bitch to deal with (note the pic above).

Put bluntly, I am looking to go bald- just to see how it would look.  I have the feeling that I'd like the look, but I thought I'd consult the forum.  I've lurked for a few hours looking for posts similar to mine, that being of men who aren't balding or having receding hairlines looking to bald for just the heck of it, but I can't find any!  I'm just a normal college kid looking to spice up my look.

Also, my eyebrows are quite thick, so should I shave them too?  And what about the beard (I'm trying to find new styles, but my facial hair is terribly uneven; and red I might add)?  I'm looking for opinions here!

Thanks in advance!

BBC - bald by choice- is very popular and we have a few BBC'ers around here.  Welcome and watch for moles when you do your virgin shave.  Look forward to pic's.

Go for it. If you don't like it, it grows back.

Leave the eyebrows alone.

Even if you want to do a #1 or #2 longer term, just get yourself some clippers and do it yourself. It's a lot cheaper than a barber and at that short, you can hardly go wrong.

Sure, give bald a 30 day spin. See how you like it.  Add a beard or mustache with a bald top.  Nice option.

If you want to try a headshave, I would first get a number zero buzz (clippers with no guard on). If you like that then it is only a very short step to a smooth headshave (razored).

All the best with your decision.

Oh, and red beards aren't all that rare.  Mine was quite red ... now more white.

Yes, a #0 (clippers with no guard) is a good trial for bald.  Just buzz your head every day or two and get the feel for it.  As my buddy says, guards are for sissies!  He's so funny, and nearly bald.

Buzz down without a guard, then wait a few days and go for the complete sly look.  That way you can compare very short to fully bald.

And don't touch the eyebrows.  You want to look sly, not like you went crazy with a razor!

As the guys say, there are certainly a lot of bbc'ers on here... (actually, I think most of us are, just some of us had a little less to shave off... )

I think it'll suit you. If you're already shaving it down pretty short it's really not such a huge step... and you already know how quick it grows back! (I used to think that I'd rather have a full head of hair to being balding, but now it's shiney and polished, I'd rather be sly any day!

If you do decide to keep it clippered short, then certainly get yourself some clippers too... it's a very easy job to do, and saves a fortune! (I spent around £40 on the whal balding clippers, and they have made their money back pretty quick!)

As for facial hair, experiment! (But keep the eyebrows!)

I'm sure you'll love it!

I'm BBC (okay I do have a small bald spot - but prior to going sly people would say I had a full head of hair).  Choosing to shave it all off isn't all that unusual these days.  Once you try it and adjust to the change, it fells pretty natural (it is after all a very, very short haircut).  In my case, after three months, I now have a hard time recalling what it was like to have hair!

Once you have the urge to try sly, it won't go away until you do it.  So, take our advice and give it a try.  In the worst case, you won't like it and your hair will grow back in a few weeks.

I'm BBC, I've got a thick head of hair and if its longer than a number 1 I get serious a bed head that takes a good ten minutes (longer than it takes me to shave) to get worked out... the side of my head i slept on will be pressed flat against my head.

Also like yourself I'm college student, I just got bored of buzzing my head and just decided to go for it one day... I wish I had found this forum first though!  I was a little hesitant at first because I've got some pretty big eye brows but I think that I'm really the only one that notices?  Definitely don't shave your brows, that would look weird... unless you're going for the Voldemort look, then by all means go a head.  I'd leave the facial hair alone too... it really completes the look.

Personally I love being bald.  There aren't many sly college students around, and I really like standing out just a little bit.  I think the ladies are curious about it too and find it a bit alluring, the sly look is something new to them too O0

And don't worry if your mom hates it... mine does, but she at least pretends to love me still.

As others have already said above, buzzing your own hair is easy & a much cheaper way to keep your hair under control. However there's no harm in shaving it as it'll only grow back if you don't like the look. Just remember to buzz it down as short as poss before busting out the wet shave!

Since you're tempted to try, go smooth! The difference between a #0 and total smooth is a mere few days growth. So you'll experiment smoothness (it IS really a nice sensation) and can see it grow back a little and decide whato to do -- to keep smooth or use the clippers and let a little hair, or even grow it back.
When I started to shave my head I tried the #1 and #0 crops before the first smooth razor shave. I liked very much when I went smooth, then simply repeated the operation over and over...even let it grow back a little just for the pleasure of re-shaving later.
I would recommeend, for the first time, to have it done at a barber or with the help of someone else.

I second both ideas: going smooth and either going to a barber or getting someone to help you shave the first time.

I talked with a Navy buddy this morning who sometimes shaves his head. He agreed that smooth is VERY NICE. In terms of look, it's not much different from #0, but it feels so much better, he says.

Your description cracked me up, because this is me too, although I'm more wavy than curly. Medium length on a good day -- Bill Clinton without the gray but throw in some funky waves. Grow it out? Never did it completely, but would probably end up looking like Jack Nance as Eraserhead or Malcolm Gladwell.

So I've worn it buzzed forever, with intermittent ventures into slydom. (I've been sly on-and-off for about 7 years.) Usually I wear it shaved bald for 2 to 6 months each summer. Despite loving the look and feel of sly, I get sick of the time investment. It takes me a full 25-30 minutes to shave my face and head. There's no rushing with my kind of hair.

A good bit of the shaving advice in this forum just doesn't work for me, so I'll offer my tidbits. When I'm sly, I shave every other day, against the grain. So I'm slick and smooth one day then stubble-boy the next. I'm fine with this as it results in the least amount of irritation for me. I really have come to learn the grain of my hair growth. No shaving straight back or forward -- this section shave up, that part shave down. The growth whirl at the back I think of like a clock and always have to shave inwards to the center at 4, 7, and 10 o'clock.

Products -- some of the highly recommended products here just don't work for me. HeadSlick (though it has changed formulations since I last tried it) just massively gunks up the razor. My favorite shaving cream is Trader Joe's Moisturizing Cream Shave.

For me it's just a haircut, like any other, so I don't have any of the baggage that the MPB crowd has had or shed. Scratch the itch -- just shave it and have some fun.

That's a whole differnt deal. I've toyed with the idea, but never had the nerve. Naturally, I have one eyebrow (think Bert of Ernie and Bert) with some crazy twists and turns. Few would know because I pluck the living daylights out of it to make myself presentable.

I know where you are coming from! My hair for lack of better description was-Well-like an explosion in a Brillo pad.  I used to spend 30 to 45 minutes in front of the mirror just to get two hairs to lay next to one another.  I lost a bet with my bald neighbor and had to shave the noggin.  Best bet I ever lost. I have been bald by choice now for over three years.  My advise is to have a barber do it first.  This gives you the opportunity to inspect your head for moles etc. Another word of advise, the barber can't get totally smooth.  As far a what other people may say, it is Your head.  In time they will come around to your way of thinking.  If you decide to be BBC, enjoy.  If not you can go back to you old self.  Good luck!!

OK, this is sort of a non-starter.  The dude posted once in August and hasn't even logged on (as that user) again since then.  It's essentailly a dead thread.  :XX
