Title: New to Headshaving....sorta
Post by: SayNoMore on August 02, 2011, 04:47:18 PM
Hey Everyone,

So for the last week I have been a sly bald guys "lurker". As fun as that sounds I decided to take the plunge and join. I'm happy to be here. So I am going to do the 30 day challenge. I shaved my head about four years ago but stopped after multiple bouts with razor bumps. I think I got so many razor bumps because my shaving routine was all wrong. After searching this forum and the internet I have found things to improve my shaving routine. I have shaved for the last two days and it has been pretty cool. The only problem I have is that I have many patches/lines of missed spots. I'm afraid to re-lather and shave over the missed patches because I think this might irritate my skin. Do you guys have any suggestions. Or will I just get better with time? Thanks for the time and I am looking forward to future being sly.

You will get better with time.  It shouldn't really cause any problems, though, to gently go over missed spots one more time.  Some areas are stubborn and require more than one pass of the razor. Just don't apply too much pressure and don't overdo it.

Thanks Razor X. I think you are right about giving it time. It's like with every shave, I missing fewer spots. I never thought a guy who had serious bouts of razor bumps could use an razor to get a smooth head, but things are looking good. Three days down and 27 days to go on the 30 day rule. I'll keep you posted.

Welcome SayNoMore. Listen to Razors' advice; give it time, go slow and you really don't need to apply any pressure to the blade, just let it do it's thing and glide gently.
In time your scalp will adjust.

Thanks xnewyawka. I am happy to join this forum and to be shaving my head again. I just got to give myself time and continue to do the 30 day rule. I'll be sure to keep you guys posted.

Hey Sly Brethren! So today is day 5 of my 30 day rule challenge. Things are going smoothly (no pun intended). There are a few missed hair spots, but they are decreasing with every shave. I noticed that a seemingly stubborn hair spot seems impossible to shave. It is under the bump in the back of my head (you know that bump that comes from the skull). It seems like the skin under this bump if lose so my razor doesn't have enough friction shave the hair there. I might just use my clippers to shave that spot. I don't want to apply too much pressure or go against the grain because the nape of my neck tends to be sensitive. I don't know if anyone in the forum has experienced something like this, but any input is greatly welcomed.

Prep is the key to a smooth shave. Do it after a shower (or in the shower) with your head wet. At first try shaving only with the grain until 1) you're more accustomed to shaving and 2) your scalp acclimates to being shaved. You can relather (I do) and shave the strays. Be sure not to put pressure on the blade and always be sure the blade is sharp so it cuts cleanly. You'll get better with a little practice, but even early on, you'll love the smooth, clean look and feel of being sly. Good luck and welcome!
