Ok...so I'm 22...and I shave my head with the #0 guard. I'm over having hair, and I don't mind being bald, but my head shape is driving me crazy. I feel like I have to wear a hat all the time...and I would really like to bear my bald head everywhere. Is there any type of surgery that can be done to "correct" my head shape? It really bothers me, and like I said, I feel the need to wear a hat everywhere. I've attached a pic to show you what I mean. The graphic isn't perfect...but it gets the point across. If I had a normal head (not bumpy!!) I would bare my head proudly.
Any ideas, suggestions, or a direction to go in would be great. If you know of any doctors I can talk to/see that'd be really helpful!

welcome to SBG's Jason..try not to dwell on head shape, alot of us got some misshaped heads ...just another thing we have to deal with and accept....unless you dont mind going through brain surgery and spending a couple hundred thousand....are you really going bald(dont say your temples are receding lol) or just shaving because you think its cool?
-
Before you do anything drastic, ditch the cap for a month to see how it feels. I'm sure you'll find that nobody cares about the shape of your head but you.
-
Here's a guy with a less-than-perfect-shaped head - Dr. Joshua Perper, the medical examiner in Broward County, Florida. He was thrust into the limelight during the Anna Nicole Smith case.

Like the others have stated, try not to dwell on it too much. I'm sure it's only "in your head." No pun intended. But seriously, give it a try for a while without the hat and I'm sure you'll realize it's no big deal. Plus would you really want to go to an extreme such as surgery and have something worse happen? Post a real pic so we can see exactly what you're talking about.
-
Tylers right man heads come in all shapes and sizes and honestly most look fine sly.
However if you are concerned then post a pic and we can give you our honest impression. As for head imperfections I have a flat spot on the back of mine (makes for a pain when I shave LOL, but it's behind me so I don't sweat it.
GL with your decision man

I've got a funky head shape, but I say it just fits my personality.......kinda warped.

You said it!

I doubt if your head is anywhere near as bad as you think. I just think it is another one of those things that we have to accept about ourselves, that we think is important, but no one else could care less about. None of us have that perfect shape, whatever that is! I am sure you will look just great. Hang in there.
-
Is there such a thing as a perfect head shape? I'd be willing to bet we can all point out things we don't like about ourselves. Let it fly for a week or two. Besides if you elected for some radical surgery, I'm sure you'd have a scar that you wouldn't be able to hide if you were Sly as well. ;)
-
I'll dig up a picture..I don't have many without a hat. i know it's not just in my head because a few people have commented on it. I don't mind being bald, but I just want to have a decent looking head like everyone else has! Then I could let go of my hats!
I wouldn't mind a scar...that's not a big deal to me. Does anyone know who I could talk to or where to go!? BTW the graphic is a profile view of my head...if there was any misunderstanding.
-
Hey bro, now that I know it's your profile view, I know that you can rock the sly look for sure! I've seen several guys that have that shaped head from a profile view and they rock it hardcore!
-
The thing that strikes me is that you are already using no guard so nothing will change if you go sly. I agree with the others, there are things that everyone hates about the way they look. Sometimes when I am having an insecure moment i ask myself whether or not what i am insecure about would be any different if i had hair? Most often not, hair or lack of it can form a useful scapegoat at times.
That said, I do appreciate where you come from I also have a bump in the middle of my head, not quite as pronounced as the image you posted, but it would be interesting to see a real pic. I notice it, and at times feel paranoid about it, but no one else has said anything.
To be honest (and sorry for the rambling!!) I think that most people prefer being sly than they did before, no matter how bad they may perceive they will look i think without exception sly is better than balding! Since I have gone sly, yes I have had the odd comment about being bald at 28, but then i fight back with the fact that i can wear a hat if i want whereas they would look stupid in a mask, generally shuts people up! But in the main it makes me laugh at work when people see pics of me before on the work server and most people dont say, god dont you look different, or didnt you look good, they generally say how weird it is to see me with hair!! So in summary I am saying that people will get used to anything including you i believe.

Working on a pic!
I'm extremely self concious about it...and it's definitely more pronounced than others. It seems like it could be fixed with surgery....and I'm willing to go that route. I've tried...and it's really hard for me to get over it. :\
-
Jason,
There is always something that a person would like to change about himself/herself, but I think you're being too hard on yourself. From my picture, my head shape looks pretty good, but from the side, it's oblong, and I don't like it. I always tend to check out other shaved heads, and I get jealous when I see a perfectly round head. So it's normal to be apprehensive, but once you shave your head, you will probably just obsess about getting it perfectly smooth (nothing wrong with that). I know it might seem harder for you since you're younger, but hey, I didn't have my first relationship with someone until I was 25 (married her by the way), and I was already losing my hair. If you already have your hair extremely short, there is not going to be much of a change when you shave it as far as what others will see. Most guys here seem to have found the reaction to be a non-event. Don't mess with surgery though, or you could end up looking like this:

We're here for you future sly bro.

Ive noticed ive got a few lumps & bumps round the back of my head, but as i cant see them its not a major worry.Behind my left ear it dips in a bit.
-
Jason, I know how you feel bro. I know it's hard to get past your view of your appearance; especially since you're the one that looks at yourself in the mirror everyday. I know because I have a physical deformity, two HUGE scars on my chest and side, that I see every morning when I get dressed and every night when I take off my shirt. Heck, it's in almost half my pictures that I took on vacation.
I could think of myself as a freak, I have before, but I don't anymore. I see myself as unique. It's PART of what shaped and molded me. It taught me lessons that I learned way earlier in life that have been a huge part of the successes that I've had later in life. Sure, I can conceal them with a shirt, but they show in other ways. Like when I try to run a mile or try to get life insurance.
I'm not trying to make you feel sorry for me; you shouldn't. I don't. I'm just trying to show you that you can get past YOUR perception of your appearance. Heck, I did. Once I did, it opened up a world of relief and confidence. You learn that people are too worried about themselves to give a damn about the way you look. Sure, there may be people that say something, but they're just trying to hide their insecurities.
If it's something you really want to do, then go for it. Feel the fear and do it anyway! If you don't like it, grow it back and I doubt anyone will remember it a month or two from now. Shoot, probably even a week or two.
I don't even need to see a picture to know that it will look good. Why? Because it really doesn't matter what I think. I could think it was the best look for you, or a completely ridiculous one. But, if you think different, that's how others are going to perceive you - the way you think it looks. If you think it looks good and support a shaved with confidence, so will others.
So, in short. Shave it and stand behind your decision. Give it 30 days of looking at it positively. Then, when the 30 days is up, reevaluate your options. If you go straight for surgery then you will probably ask yourself "what if" the rest of your life.
-
Pretty much summed it up there Tyler...

Awsome post Tyler, you nailed it right there.

Tyler usually does, he rolls like that.
-
BTW the graphic is a profile view of my head...if there was any misunderstanding.
JasonR, If that graphic is of your head, then the only thing people will notice is that you have no ears!! ;)
But on the serious side, I was worried about my family inherited second chin, and in my main thread a goatee was suggested which I now have. But what I have noticed since I have shaved is people now look in my eyes when they talk to me, not my head or chin or goatee. Before they noticed my balding head with thin bangs trying to hide a receeding hairline.
Also, welcome to SBG!
-
Thanks for the replies! Tyler..I've learned that scars make a person more unique...I've got my fair share of them. I'm not bald by choice...I started balding (receding) around 16...which is strange because all of the males in the family have a full head of hair. Strangely, I've had the same receding hair line for a while that's gotten slightly worse, but the hair on top of my head is really thin. I just use a trimmer with no guard to shave my head. I actually like being bald, and I think it's definitely unique. But I just can't get over the "bump" in my head. I've tried, and tried, and tried. I can put up the one or two pictures if I can find them...
It doesn't seem bad enough to require MAJOR surgery, but if I can get a completely round head, why not do it? That's the only way I feel that I can freely walk around bald with complete confidence. I am a confident guy, and I would say that's the major insecurity of very few. I just don't know who or what doctor to start talking to. I'm also very concerned with a Doctor doing his job right.
-
Jason, I'd love to see a pic. I think that would help me give a more factually honest opinion.
-
Hey Jason, Hows things? No body has a perfect anything let alone a perfect head. I mean in my case it's not so much my head but the fact that I have ears by Express Vu (satellite service provider for my Americian Friends) and glasses by Hubble. Don't worry about other peoples what others will think, do what YOU want. If every one worried about others perceptions than we'd all be basket cases, and I'd be out of a job. It's all about you brother.
-
CDN Meathead...welcome to the site brother!
O0 O0
-
Jason...welcome the site...as far as the shape of your head issue, I guarantee you are wasting too much time and energy worrying about it...shave the head, let yourself get used to it and the confidence will come, if its attracting women as well that you are questioning, the ones that you want to attract are the ones that care more about the type of person you are, not thhe shape of your head...I know it sounds like BS, but you have to give yourself time to figure it out anyway, so take the plunge, read some more posts on this site and you will fell better, I promise ya!
Besides you don't wann go the route that I did and woryy for the next 7yrs and waste tons of $$$ trying to hide under a "piece" or do a combover, or just have thinning hair, the "sly" way feels so much better and you will feel the confidence almost immediately!
-
New Sly guy! Have you looked at my head! Brother you don't look bad at all!
Like the others try it out! You will like it!
Besides that I'm 54 and really don't care what the population says!
I'm getting WOW looks in spite of the noggin (plus the turkey neck!)
Do it Young Sly Guy!!! O0

hey, now let me say something: when I was 5-6 years old, I was playing in the park, and some kids were throwing sand in my hair, and I ended up getting ringworm (No longer have this THANK GOD!!!!) but, unfortunately, left an indentation on the top of my head, (Scar), and I ended up loosing my hair. (I ended up growing it back later, but my doc said I was lucky, because i could have permanently went bald). Now, i wear a hat once in a while (Not all the time, because I normally loose them) but when I go outside, nobody ever sais anything about it. so, dont wory about it. Now, unfortunately, there are a few people that like to poke fun, put just ignore it. Normal people will not bother you about it.

Jason,
I would say shave it just like most have said before me. I don't know of one of my bald headed brothers out there who are totally happy with their dome but they wear the look and feel great about it. A friend of mine has a great shaped dome (I think) and I see my imperfections. I always say that I would like his shape and he says he has issues too and likes the look of my dome.
I say go for it, it is not as bad as you think it is. O0

I'm workin on a pic...sorry it's taking so long I'm in the middle of a move right now...
-
nobody's head is perfect. Don't base your decision on that, and welcome.
-
JasonR, I know what it's like to have an abnormal head shape. My head looks more like a damn triangle than a human head on the side view. When I look at my baby pics, the head shape was fine when I was born but then it molded into this huge... thing :D. I guess it's just the way my head was meant to be or something, although I don't know a lot about what defines ones head shape.
-
Alright I'm just about all settled in after the move...
anyways I dug up an old pic. You can see how my head is not normally shaped..basically the rear is higher than the front. I desperately want to get it "fixed". I've tried to forget about it, but I just can't. Now only is my hair almost gone, my head is funny shaped. However, it looks like it wouldn't involve any brain surgery (thank God) and it looks like it could be done (I've stared at my head WAY too many times lately). On to the pics...
My abnormally shaped head

And this is me with Sunglasses on my head to hide the "dent" in my head. I just want my head shape to be normal. I'm 22...I need to get on with my life; I want to get this taken care of. My girlfriend is in these pics...so don't be alarmed. I'm the one without hair!

And my head from a profile view WITH sunglasses. This is how I want my head to look like...!

Edit for clarification: This is not doctored or anything, the sunglasses happened to disguise my bump head perfectly and it looks like a normal head in that picture. That's what I WANT.
-
Hi Jason, could do with another pic WITHOUT the glasses this time because i really can't see a massive problem TBH.Everyones head has some sort of imperfection on it.Mines all over the place.
-
Hey bro, I agree with Ian. Let's see another pic without the glasses. Thought, I think if you have a cute girl like that, you must have not have too "abnormal" of a head shape.
-
Hi Jason,
Yes, I can see what you're talking about from the top pic that you posted but .... & it's a big BUT ..... there's absolutely nothing abnormal about that shape of head ... it's just another head shape & in fact, it's quite a common one. I think probably most guys have it to a greater or lesser degree. Start looking for yourself when you see other bald or SLY guys out & about, I'm sure you'll soon realise that it's not at all unusual.
- Also on the plus side I remember hearing once that a pronounced back of the skull was an indication of high creativity so I wouldn't be too quick rushing into any kind of surgery - you may lose more than you bargained for!
Anyway, hope this helps a bit. Oh & by the way ... you rock the sly look dude!
-
Jason, normal is what is normal for each of us, we all have bumps, ridges, imperfectons. So long as you have such good looking women attracted to you...I don't see the problem.
-
Hi
Ok just a couple of points:
- There is something that all of us dont like about our headshape. I have a similar worry to you, but it is only in any way visible to me and to others from a very specific angle. Your photos highlight the same thing. Your prfile to me looks absolutely fine.
- Your head shape didnt exactly prevent you finding a hot girlfriend!! It seems to me as is always the case with everyone who posts on here including myself that insecurities are entirely within, very few others even notice.
-
Dude - With that GIRLFRIEND!!! Dang - How do I get the bump!!
-
I have to agree with the other gents here. I think that what you're seeing is not what everyone else would see. In other words, you're blowing it way out of proportion. I wouldn't give your head a second thought if I saw you on the street except to think, cool, another bald brother. Please rest easy that your head is just fine. What does your gal think? I would assume she is just fine with it. Otherwise, why would she be locking lips with ya? O0
-
Bro, your obsessing...your girl is hot....your head looks fine......ditch putting the glasses in the middle of your head........your girl don't care.....other hot chicks wouldn't care.....be happy with your self, and remove the little annoying obsession from your thoughts so that you can be happy and clear-thinking...
-
Thanks for the kind words...but the pics don't do my bumpy head justice. Other people definitely notice and have mentioned it...and my girlfriend's definitely mentioned it to.
If I can get it changed...then why not....?
Another Image...not the best...
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi25.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc51%2Fjayreg%2Fbumpy-head4.jpg&hash=1551a66e741dc895996afb710acc2ba8ef2f5b27)
-
If I can get it changed...then why not....?
Because you run the risk of having your head totally f**ked up for good. I'm not sure that a "fix" is even possible. Most people aren't going to be looking at the top of your head or viewing you from an angle where they would even notice any perceived abnormalities in your head shape. It's hard to say for sure from that photo, but I think you are probably worrying about nothing. Grow a goatee. It will redirect people's focus from your head back to your face.
-
If your girlfriend and friends have such a problem with your bump that they think you should have skull surgery, then you need a new girlfriend and friends. Nobody is perfect. I don't like the fact that my head isn't perfectly round in the back, but you couldn't pay me enough money in the world to try to fix it. I cannot imagine the scarring that you would have. You are still young, so please don't make any rash decisions. You are a good looking guy; don't ruin it.
-

OK, I hadn't seen these photos when I made my last post. Forgive me if I'm being blunt, but dude, this obsession with your head shape is totally insane. I can't see anything wrong with it. Most of us have an indentation where the forehead meets the top of the skull. I do.
You are down to stubble anyway, so it's not like you're hiding it under a mound of hair right now. What possible reason could you have for not shaving it? You can be back to where you are in two days, tops. The "abnormal" shape you're so worried about might even be less noticeable if you shave. You'd be surprised what a difference removing even a little stubble can make. The stubble can cast a shadow, and when you remove that, the shadow may be gone, or at least evened out, so that attention is diverted to a different part of the head. And like I said before, facial hair can be a good way to distract people's attention from the top of your head.
If you would just do it, then you'll know for sure whether it works for you or not. Until then, it's all just a guessing game. It's well worth the risk of not liking it and waiting 2 days for it to grow back to find out for sure, don't you think?
-
I've got the odd protusion on the back of my head. a few people have commented on it. I joke and tell them that it's the spot where the nuns filed down the horn. (I was born 2 am nov 1, technically still halloween. So I was a devil baby. yeah!!! >:D)
-
Know this is a old topic but what ended up happening? did you manage to get over it or did you try and get surgery?
I am not shaved yet but i am your head twin... and i am also 21 (22 soon) which you were when you posted this. Just wondering if the dent is something that you get over with time or if it is a constant worry. (obviously everyone is different just be good to hear how you handled it as a young guy)
