As some of you may know Google is stepping into the social network arena with what they are calling Google+. I don't think it is a FaceBook killer yet, but it has some nice features and potential.
It kind of quite right now because they are new and beta testing it. If you would like an invite though, leave your email address as a comment (or PM it to me) and I'll send you an invite. One thing about the invites, you may or may not get an email confirming your invite. So you may want to go to plus.google.com and attempt to log in.

I tried to join and start a circle, but couldn't figure it out. I guess I ain't bright enough (this wouldn't be a first time this has happened). A friend of mine (online) did a video on it and it's quite cool, being able to do video chatting and stuff, I think it just might hurt Facebook as facebook hurt MySpace. It's all evolution. my email is in my info if you want to invite me.

Invite sent

Didn't Facebook, which is partially owned by MS, just add SKYPE, which is totally owned by MS, to its' offerings.
-
Thx Doug!
-
I'm on there - If you want an invite, let me know!
-
I noticed today that Google has posted a notice that they have temporarily exceeded their capacity for Google + and to try again later.

That seems to be happening from time to time - growing pains I guess. I sent your invite. Just check back at the site to see when that message isn't there and you should be able to try and log in.
-
It should be open to everyone now, no invite required
-
Will have to give it a try.
-
Hey Doug what are your thoughts so far? I like it. So far I love the no ads all over the right panel. But I'm sure at some point that will change.
-
What are the advantages over Facebook.?
-
Hey Tom,
Right now there is not a lot to do on Google +, I will be honest on that. There are no games on there, there are only the friends you invite or that have invited you since it's still by invite only. The advantages over FB for me is that I have never really cared for FB. I joined because well everyone else is on there and it's a quick easy way to communicate. It's also a lot more streamlined. You can create different "circles of friends" meaning that if you post some joke that you don't want the family to read but you do want your bros to read you can do that easily. It does tie into everything you do on google. Say you have a smart phone with Google a la Android, that pic will get sent to Picassa where you can later decide whether to share, who to share it with etc.
I found this that hopefully will answer more questions to you and anyone else out there who is interested:

How do you get the invitation the easiest way is to ask for one from someone who already has one.
Peace,
Adrian

Am I the only one on here that doesn't have any interest in sites like facebook or this new comer google has rolled out?

I like it. No ads or no games is a nice change. There aren't too many people on it now, but I'm sure that will change with time.
I really like the circles feature!

Nope, not at all. I just don't understand the mindset of putting any part of my life out there in the fashion of some perpetual and ongoing announcement--sort of like those awful "newsy" letters some people put in their holiday and Christmas cards. Don't want to read it either.

That element of social media (the constant personal updates) is annoying. At the same time though, social media is incredible for what is allows in terms of making connections and information exchange. During the crisis in Cote d'Ivoire earlier this year I was able to get updates and eventually help my friends get supplies all through facebook and twitter. I put the plea out there on social media and got a bunch of responses. In addition to helping my friends and finding reliable info re: the on the ground situation, I also ended up making new friends with people on twitter and facebook (1 of these has now become a friend in real life!!) who were also interested in Cote d'Ivoire and West Africa more generally. It took me a while to see its potential, but now that I regularly collaborate with people online and I have met a handful of people in real life, I see the power in it.

Het bro let me know if you need an invite, I will need your email address.
-
Google+ has removed the invite-only aspect of their site. Come on it, the water's warm....
-
Doug, can you give me a run down, what is google+ exactly?
-
It is similar to FB but different, in good ways IMO. The biggest difference is circles. Circles are groups of friend that you set up. When you post a status, you can share with however many circles you want. You can also control the ability to comment and share on your posts.
In a nutshell, I'd say that's its FB without all the bloated needs of ads and such AND better control/privacy settings.
-
Thanks, but its not my cup of tea. I tried Facebook and hated every second of it, and I doubt I'd feel any different about G+. If I want my friends to know when I scratch my backside, I can email them or call them :)
I'm sure FB (and G+) has its/their uses, but its just not for me.
-
Thanks Doug, I'm not on Facebook very often. This (Google+) does sound like you have more control over who see's what. I may check it out.
-
I'd love to start a SBG circle! feel free to add! Just let me know you are Sly!

I added you to my SBG circle.

I'm on. Don't know what I'm doing...but I'm on.
-
Count me in too 😄
-
I fail to see the point really. I linked my g mail account back in July, set up some circles blah blah blah.
Bottom line, nobody I know ever uses it or logs on to check theirs either.
I think it's a total flop but wouldn't care less if it were dynamically successful anyway.
-
I've been using it more and liking it. Here's my info if anyone would like to add me to their circle. https://plus.google.com/u/0/118245876968844745883/about

Google+ hasn't worked for me. I am still very much a facebooker!
-
I never tried it and don't think I really need it.
