Title: Killing the rat!
Post by: hairhead on May 04, 2011, 02:44:27 PM
Like many others around here, I started loosing my hair around 18 or so. For some great idea I decided to hide it for the last 20 years or so. I am now 40 and absolutely hate this piece of carpet glued to my noggin. I originally got it because I have a rather large birth mark just above what used to be my hairline. I am scheduled with a plastic surgeon Monday to have it cut flat and laser treated. I figured that would be the ideal time to go SLY. I am fairly nervous of all the comments since I am going from a hair hat to sly but I’m ready to move on.

I have all weekend to gather my equipment.

This site has already helped a ton to nudge me into the decision to be free!

Don't wait, buzz that dead piece o' s%#t down, and then shave what's left. I guarantee you'll feel one hundred percent better, not to mention free. If you're worried about the birthmark, you can put a band aid over it and shave around it. It will also make things a lot easier for when they cut and laser it. Then you can change your name to smoothhead, Good luck!

"hairhead", you will not be the first member to get the dead rat off your head. The experience has been overwhelmingly positive for those guys, and I'm sure it will be the same for you.

Welcome to SBG and freedom from the tyranny of hair (or dead rat as the case may be).

As another sly guy who finally took the plunge because of some surgery .....take my advice and do it BEFORE the procedure.

After the procedure there is a good chance you'll have some irritation and inflammation -- not a good spot to be in for a first shave.

And welcome to the gang.

The plan is to get the rat off my head, clippers, shave, go to the doc. Come out a new bald man. ;D

Good luck with the procedure.....you won't regret ditching the dead rat, but you will regret not going sly sooner O0

I got postponed by a week. They changed my surgery to this coming Monday. I was bummed out at first, then relieved, then pissed off. I am now just looking forward to it. My new plan is to do the deed Friday and get a little sun over the weekend and then go in Monday for the removal and big band aid.

Over the weekend we had a family gathering for mothers day and my bald uncle in reference to my turning 40 said “ In another year or two you are going to look like me” LOL, my wife looked at me and we had a pretty good laugh. I guess a lot of people have no clue to the varmint on my head. I don't know if that is going to make it easier or harder to explain when I make the switch.

How did I ever let this lie go on for so long?

Please be sure and wear sunscreen on that freshly scraped dome. You'll be thankful you did. The last thing you want is to go into the Doc with a red head. :)

I was a rat wearer for 6 years myself.  Congrats on your new life!  Trust me, you will feel infinitely better once you get that thing off and start being who you are.  I too was afraid at first at what people were going to think, but believe me it was a non-issue.  Yes, people will notice, but you will be amazed at the positive reactions you get!  Welcome to sly guys, we're happy to have you.

The deed is done. I am officially Sly for two hours. I already feel like a new man. My wife likes it, my kids are freaked out, my dog didn't notice.

On the way to work I put the windows down, opened the sun roof and just enjoyed the wind on my bald head. It had to be the best feeling in the world.

My shave went pretty good with little irritation. I did get a small nick when working lefty on the back but over all not bad. I am using the Jergins tanner lotion with sun screen for a while until things even out.

I have a pretty good shadow but what can you do? I have had a “System” on for almost 20 years.

I want to thank everyone on this site for the encouragement and support. For some reason I am not smart enough how  8)to post an image.

O0  Enjoy the freedom--you're in control now.  And about the shadow--only you and some other sly guys will ever notice!

I remember the day I got rid of my rat - 06/08/07. One of the greatest days of my life. I wore it for 23 years. What a relief!

So far I am really surprised as to how many people had no idea I had a hair hat on. I still have a lot of people to see next week so it will be an interesting week.  Does the sensitivity go away on your head?

Does the sensitivity go away on your head?

Yes, it will subside as your scalp gets use to being scraped.

If what you mean is the feeling of "breezes" and a slight numbness--yes that goes away.  Now there is one thing your question reminded me to post--watch that dome, without the hair or what remains to tell you you're too close to something, you might bump your head a little more until you adapt.  I had lots of run ins with doors on rental cars until I learned that.

At first I found the various sensations on my scalp quite novel. I'm at 30+ days and quite honestly forget that I have no hair on my head. It's now starting to catch me by surprise when people who've seen me before react to my new 'hairstyle'  ;D. There are times when I put my hands behind my head ... and surprise myself!

The bumps are a hassle at first -- under desks sorting out computer cables, or when taking a 'quick look' at the back of  a PC box and finding the wall in the process. I've simply evolved a different way of going about that and the problems are largely solved.

Day 2

Feeling a little odd today. My head is pretty red on top from the hair hat and I have a white strip where the tape used to be. I hope things clear up the next few days. Tomorrow I go in for surgery so I will have a big band aid to add to the look.

As bad as I look currently, I am way less self conscience than before and a lot more accepting that I am bald. O0

Went for surgery today, everything is good, nothing like the smell of your own burning flesh. Tomorrow is my first work day Sly with a big Band Aid. Really looking forward to it.

I picked up a Headblade today and may take it for a ride in the morning.....Really getting into the shaving routine. It will be my third shave every other day and my scalp seams to be OK with it. I just want it a little closer, my left is always a problem.

What are you saying to people who see you for the first time without hair?

12 Days of sly.

I have had a total of one person mention that I looked more natural bald. Thats it. Everyone else said I looked good and never hinted at anything about the Old Rat Hat. I am sure there will be more comments as I see more people but for the most part it has been a complete non issue for most people. I still look in the mirror and am startled how freak-en good I look Sly. I was the only one loosing sleep and going poor over it.

Has it really been two months? That was fast.

Observations:

No one really cares.
People I know really well still are waiting for my hair to grow back.
I have had one Mr.Clean comment in two months (he did recently pass)
Kids are the only honest ones about your new look.
The Head blade rocks.
The rat becomes more laughable by the day.
The “Club” wants me back, they even sent a $1000 coupon
You can spot a “Club” member from 100 yards
My wife loves the new look
I have a bigger bank account with less hair
I no longer spend hours looking in the mirror making sure my pet is behaving on my head and undetectable by others
My father in law said he liked me better before I did whatever I did.
I no longer sit in the waiting room looking at all the bad pieces on the insecure men.....Oh sh*t, a mirror thats me!
I cant explain the amount of freedom and control you feel once the deed is done.
I will NEVER go back to wearing a piece.
I really look forward to shaving my dome
I wish I had done it 15 years ago
Did I mention that no one really cares?
I can swim faster (Not really)
Balding men will admire you, men with hair will admire you for making it a non issue
