I am more mad this AM than I have been in probably 20 years. My son has constantly been bullied for about a year. We have ahad a constant battle with school over this.
The school promotes a no tolerance policy for bullies and will tell anybody in ear shot how great they are at dealing with bullies.
But it turns out the school system is just a ppaper tiger.............. no bite to go with the bark.
My son was accosted by (4) boys in the bathroom yesterday. All four boys were bigger than him. No discipline was taken.
I'll be at the school in about 20 minutes to fix things for good.
Controlled rage is the only way to describe how I feel this AM.

My thoughts are with you today. I don;t have children so can only imagine....
-
Remember the No Tolerance Policy against violence when you speak to the school administrators ... $c#m
Hope your son is doing well. Keep us posted.
-
Put it in writing, and send a copy to the school district--even the principal has to report to the superintendent, and the superintendent reports to the board--and the board has the utlitmate responsibility when things go south from this stuff, so they should make sure everyone understands what No Tolerance really means.

I'm waiting for a call from the Superintendant.... I went by his office but he has a meeting all morning. The Principal isn't in today so the VP took the brunt of my anger.
I am in the process of rallying others in the community to attend the next school board meeting. If I can get enough support to commit to show up I will contact the local paper so they can run a story.
Within 5 minutes of posting on Facebook last night about my son being bullied my phone was ringing and the PMs were flying on FB.
When I went into the office this AM there was a stack of papers on the counter for the taking. I looked at the top paper and it was about the great Bulling Program. Ironic huh?
I picked one up, placed it in front of the VP, and told him it was a joke because they don't do what they say they will do.
The VP didn't like that he had to take the brunt of my anger but when I asked if he had children and he replied yes..... I knew he understood.

I'm sorry to hear about this. It seems historically that bullying is so often overlooked by teachers and staff, and that's a g--d--- shame. No child should be subjected to it.
-
Mike, check with your local authorities and state on rules/laws regarding bullying. As a professional educator I can tell you the only thing school administrators respond to is the possibility of legal action. Also, think about attending a school board meeting and bringing it up directly to the school board.

I had a similar experience with my daughter in middle school. She was constantly harassed by a group of 5 girls. A couple of times she was injured and required medical treatment and, at these times I made police reports of which I then supplied copies to the principal as well as basic medical records of the treatment received. I then spoke to a private attorney and asked that a letter be sent to the principal advising the potential for a lawsuit arising out of these incidents if he continued his practice of failing to provide adequate security for my daughter. My attorney was ready to not only sue the school and the district but also the principal personally as I had taken care to provide him with the documents described. Something about making him aware of the problem would then expose him to personal liability.
I also made a 3am stop at one kid's apartment to recover some property of my daughter's which had been stolen. During my visit I encouraged her father to begin to instill some self-discipline and manners into his daughter by whatever means necessary. I advised him, politely of course, that his failure to gain the desired outcome would result in me coming back for another discussion of the tenets of parental discipline.
That seemed to resolve the issue. In fact the group that had been her nemesis for so long actually started to watch her back at school.

Once those in control are notified of a problem, they have "Foreseeable Liability" and must act on such, or be liable for anything they don't do.
-
I hope you get this resolved soon. I think even those of us without kids can relate; we've all been on the receiving end of bullying at one time or another. Good luck.

My wife and I spoke to the Superintendant last Thursday afternoon. He didn't say a whole lot but when I asked him if he believed that four kids picking my son up by his limbs and trying to jam him into a toilet was bullying he said "Yes".
I then told him that apparently the Principal didn't believe that to be the case because she gave out no discipline. He didn't say a word but I could visibly see him clench his teeth.
Friday I got a call from the Principal saying that the boys were suspended and my son was getting one day of in school supension.
I'm not happy about my son but for now I'll settle for that. The heat isn't off for the school yet. The Principal hung up on me on the phone.... very unptofessional. The Superintendant will be getting a call from me to discuss this tomorrow.
In addition... since last Wednesday I've been rallying the community to attend the next school board meeting on the 16th. Looks like we might have 50-100 people there.
I'll be speaking firmly, candidly, and sending a clear message to the school board.
-
Hope things work out for you. It seems that todays school admin people are all about being P.C. AND ARE MORE CONCERNED WITH POSSIBLE BUDGET CUTS!!!!!!!. I f I hear one more of these elitist fools say that ''it's all about the kids'', I'll go absolutely ape-sh**.

Let me get this straight, your son wasn't the aggressor, cornered by 4 punks and he got punished as well....so everything has to be fair in this matter ??? Sounds to me also that the school board isn't really complying or taking accountability. I would seriously contact your local congressperson if you want to rattle there cages, there should be no excuse for bullying and if there is the aggressor(s) needs to be punished to the fullest extent and the individual that was defending himself/herself be brought to his/her attention that everything will be alright......
Give em' hell Mike !!!! O0

the Principal saying that the boys were suspended and my son was getting one day of in school supension.
i would not accept that why in hell would the victim get victimized again when punished for getting bullied i would call the big wig again and express more controlled rage about the fact that a zero tolerance policy punishes the innocent.
-
Koz, I hope that the administration at all levels will see that this is an issue and start doing something about what is happening to your son and others at that school.
-
Why did your son get suspended, he said while scratching his head.
-
My son was suspended because one of his friends and him were going back and forth with "Yo Mama" jokes" and one of the four little bastards seems to have taken offense to it. That's what they told the Principal anyway.
I was on the phone again with the Superintendant this AM. I told him that the Principal called my wife a liar and then pointed out the exact reason to him that there was no way my wife was lying and that his Principal was instead covering her ass. I also told him that the principal hanging up on me wasn't the way I would expect a professional to treat the parent of a student.
I also told him that there was no way that I was going to sit back and let our schools become a reflection of what's going on in society..... the victims being punished while the perpetrators get a slap on the wrist.
I also told him that under no circumstance is my son to be taken into an office and be talked to about anything except school work unless my wife and/or I are there. I told him if this happened there would be action taken against the school.
I told him I would only deal with him directly in the future because the Principal was a liar and couldn't be trusted.
He in fact doled out the discipline to all the kids.... and the Principal tried to convince him not to discipline the (4) perpetrators because she felt "talking to them had changed behaviors". WTF is that????
You can follow my updates on this thing on FaceBook if you want. I'm friends with a bunch of SBGs so I should be easy to find. Or PM me and I'll give you my name.
May 16th is the next School Board meeting and they are going to get their ears filleda bout the amazing bullying policy in the schools. I currently have a couple dozen people lined up to attend with me and I'm hoping that number is going to grow exponentially.
My wife has an "in" with the Gettyburg newspaper so we're going to try and get them there to cover the meeting.
-
Mike, I hope you are successful in your quest to get the school district to really put some teeth in the anti-bullying policy. While high school went pretty well for me, junior high was sheer hell. I was the victim of bullying. So much so that I truly wanted to kill myself. I never had the nerve to do so thankfully. Also between junior and senior high, I became a Christian. So that helped! But even with that bullying can cause long term emotional damage and make you feel like a piece of $h%t! So bravo to you in your efforts!

Have you considered contacting your local TV news station? It may be a way to really get your point across to the school and to get the message out about bullying in schools not being ok.

Doug.... I have indeed considered it and will in fact contact them.

Hang in there Mike, and stick to your guns!. Time for a little East Coast justice to be done, I think. >:(
Bullying of any kind has to be stopped. Definitely contact the news channel and see if you can get them to do a report on it.

The school and the school board get one crack at this. If they screw it up I will personally fix it the way I would have when I lived in Baltimore City. All bullies eventually get theirs and I will be more than happy to help accomodate that for any of these four pieces of sh*t.
