Just wondering if many of you guys go to a barbershop regularly for a headshave as a treat?
-
Every now and then as I find it relaxing and enjoyable. Unfortunately, the costs can add up.
-
in my state the only place that scrapes the grape is either the barber school or Quintessential gentleman one is cheap but you get nicked or an electric shave if not certified yet vs an empty wallet. you pick either way you get what you pay for then it grows back.
-
I have had barber shop head shaves. The experience is great - hot towels, hot lather, etc. It's really fun to do when I've taken some time off from sly and I walk in with a full head of hair and ask to be shaved bald. BUT...
I have never gotten a barber shop head shave that was as close and smooth as when I do it myself. Even a conscientious barber who goes over it in both directions just can't get the same perfect smoothness I give myself.
I still think the relaxing experience is a worthwhile treat now and then - but just don't expect baby-butt smooth.
-
I have gone a few times. It is a real treat and gret to be pampered once in awhile with the straight razoe shave, the hot towels and the lather. IT is very relaxing. I do agree though that the barber doesn't get it as clase as I do.
:)
-
Never a got a full head shave but always had the sides shaved with a sraight razor when I sporting the High and Tight. Was a great feeling during and after
-
Quite a few times.......

Just had my head shaved again at Larry's Barber's in Edinburgh. This was a great experience. I have had my head shaved at a barbers before on several occassions.
Before he shaved my head he checked what stubble I had by rubbing his hand all over my head. He then put some cream on my head which he rubbed into my stubble & scalp before applying warm foam & proceeding to shave my head. A barbershop head shave is a tremendous experience & if you haven't had a head shave at a barbers, then you need to do so.
-
I have the same thoughts as BaldSurfer on this.

quite a few myself, and iam getting one today, i have been so busy ive gone about two days without shaving
-
I've gotten a barbershop shave a couple of times and I'll echo what everyone else has said...it's a great experience. :)
-
I love getting a barbershop headshave!
Problem is, it's quite expensive and it's really difficult to find a barber who really likes doing it.
So I usually ask for a #0 and finish at home. And some of them still try to convince me to do a #1. They don't understand why, if I have a full head of hair, I want to get rid of it... Some say "oh but a #2 would suit you so well..."
It's annoying to shave everyday and I like to see my hair grow a little and shave it again... I like all stages, except the "sandpaper" sensation of days 2 to 4. From day 5 is the "tiny rug" sensation again and I like it.
Sometimes I let it grow 2 or 3 weeks before shaving sly again and some barbers simply think "I don't need a headshave".
Once I found one that did a very nice job but it's quite far from home. So I simply try to keep a routine of getting a #0 each 7 or 10 days and finishing sly at home.

barbershop shaves can be good...and can be bad. cheap theyre not.
-
I've had one. It was just over two years ago when I had the urge to go SLY for the third time. My flattop was over grown and my son also needed a haircut. While the hot lather and towels were awesome, the end result was a bit disappointing. I expected a super duper baby butt smooth shave and that's where the disappointment comes in to play. Anyway, it was a good experience going from some hair to none, but don't expect a totally smooth dome.
-
I've had a number of barbershop headshaves and its a great experience to sit in the barberchair with your head lathered up and getting skinned with a straight razor. My barber takes his time and goes over my head twice against the grain. He even mentioned to me on my first visit, before I even had the chance to tell him, "You baldies usually like shaved you against the grain. Is that how you want yours?". With that, he has never gotten me as slick as I can myself. Its just a great way to reward yourself on occasion. I probably need to go do that. Its been while.
-
Same experience here. Plus, it's cool to see others in the shop waiting in the chair amazed that you're getting your head shaved...and you can tell there's a natural curiosity and they might dare try it themselves...some guy was asking me all about it last time I had it done. I left with a major shiny dome and said, "give it a try..."

Getting a barbershop headshave is most definately one of my favorite things to do! I've had many a barbered haircut but shaved only twice. I agree with what's been said about the closeness..never as close as when you do it yourself. There's only one guy in town who uses a straight razor; the rest of them adhere to the health dept reg which prohibits the practice. He hails from Russia and tells me he learned the art (at 13, mind you! Would you ever let a 13-year old near you with that blade?!) of straight razor shaving from his dad who learned it from the grandpa.
I love the thrill, the feel, the look. And it's fun as heck to walk into that shop all brave-but-scared and get it shaved to nothing, especially when there's been some significant hair growth.
-
fantastic and welcome!
-
I got a barber shop head shave for my birthday a week ago... I loved it! The whole hot towels thing and just sitting back and relaxing... It was great!
-
Barbershop head shaves are great!
-
Ok, so I'm taking back what I said about the closeness -lack thereof, really- of a barbered headshave. I cannot keep my hands off my head tonight, for today I had THE best shave in a barbershop. Ever! The straight razor blade was new, the towels were steamy hot and frequent, the barber skilled. Now I can usually get some respectable results in about 10 minutes by myself, but this shave was a good 1/2 hour in the making and couldn't have been more perfect! It's sooo good to be this smooth. Plus the luxury of having it done..such a treat.
-
I agree with Carla.
-
Sounds good Carla, there really is nothing like that pampering, so enjoyable.
Your barbershop sounds like a keeper. O0
I will have to try and find a good one out here.
-
I have had one in Australia where I live but was disappointed in the smoothness (and the cost). However I travel regularly and for a great experience try it in India or Myanmar. They use a straight razor and it costs virtually nothing - less than $2.
-
I had a head (and face) shave in Egypt three weeks ago, and it cost me 55 Egyptian pounds, which is around 6 UK pounds, or $10. I then had one here in the UK on Saturday (admittedly along with a body massage) and it cost me almost 20 times as much.
Perfect shave on both occasions, but as is just about always the case in the UK, it was very very very expensive. We're not called Rip Off Britain for nothing.
-
I have my weekly head shave in my regular barershop and its a treat that I am always looking forward to. Here in the Philippines the cost of a complete head shave is at 2$ on the average. All barbershops do head shaves. In my case, my regular barber never disappoints, I always leave the chair with my head smooth as a baby's butt and really shiny. An added bonus is a soothing head massage.
-
I have never had the pleasure to get a headshave at the barbershop. But I would love to, problem I guess is finding one that can do the job, at least in my area. I do travel quiet frequently so I will be on the lookout and give it a try, but honestly I don't think the shave itself will top what I achieve when I do it myself
-

Best shave, although at the time, many many years ago I still had hair, was in Barcelona on the street between the Gothic Square and the Ramblas. I doubt that things, even in Spain, stand still--but I'd certainly try for it in Spain.
-
Usually, I go to get my facial hair trimmed...but if I have enough growth, I'll let him shave my head too..It usually depends on my finances at the time....There is this guy who give you a shave, cut AND wash for $25 I go to him once every three months when I get my bonus check from work O0 (When I was deployed, the Iraqis did pretty good, they did my moustache, head and sometimes eyebrows for under $10)
-
I'm expecting to go back to the far east during the first half of 2012. I think I'll try to find a shaver while there.
-
Gonna have to try it some time myself...see what all the "fuss" is about. :)
-
A new place opened near me called "Roosters". It's a franchise. For $20, they offer to shave your head "as smooth as a baby's bottom". I'll have to check it out soon.
-
There is a Roosters franchise now open in suburban Chicago as well. I think I'll give them a try and see if they can really deliver on the 'smooth as a baby's bottom' claim.
My only other head shave by a barber was sadly disappointing on smoothness.

There is a barber here that will do them--I had him trim up the face fuzz a couple of weeks ago and asked. However, although he uses the straight razor he said it wouldn't be any smoother than my Hydro 5 shave--but you do get all the prep--hot towels, etc., and a head massage after the shave. I'm thinking of doing it just before Christmas as a gift to myself.
-
I had my head shaved at barber shops several times. They don't get as close as I can, but it's a decent experience.
-
I just arrived from my regular barber shop head shave. The experience took the usual hour of lathering and scraping......the result is smooth as a baby's bottom...Can't wait for the next appointment. ;)
-
have done it many times, love the feel and rub
-
Just had my head shaved while on holiday in Fiji. There is a large Indo-Fijian population in Fiji and consequently many barbers (just like India). Only cost about US$3 but although relaxing experience with straight razor it was disappointing as to smoothness. Lots of Fijian men had shaved heads and were very smoothly bald - perhaps they shaved themselves.

The last time I had it done was at Grooms in Brighton , expensive but a wonderful experience . A guy called Steve did mine and he likes doing headshaves . I sort of had time off from SLy about a month ago . He buzzed , shaved once witha cut throat after hot lather . Rinsed lathered and shaved again hot rinse cooler rinse . Trimmed my brows , and as I specified I wanted a shiny finish I got one with a fragrant stuff . Felt so good after coming out . It is a treat but can thouroughly reccommend it if your in Brighton but they do like an appointment , cost me £22 . I would go back again def , You can also find some Turkish Barbers who will do it . Pall Mall Barbers in London do it appointment though never had one done there yet .
Advice always check what your getting before making the appointment , ie soem guy tried to dry shave me , not a good experience .
-
Thank for the recommend.
Think I will visit Grooms of Brighton for one their shaved head specials, when next I visit.
-
Well ihave noticed Brighton there are quite a few barbers now doing hot shaves , i m not sure if this als means a head shave . Since my brief argument with a HB last friday might have to leave it to grow and get a pro to shave me , dont want to it looks a disgrace .
-
You bet I would but im in the UK , ur on the other side of the pond
-
chav check your PM's!

Every now and then, I let mt hair grow out for a couple of weeks! Just for the feeling of walking out of the barbers shop with a freshly shaved head! (Last time I did this, about a month ago, I walked out of the barber shop into a huge smile from a stunningly beautiful dark haired lass! I was too stunned to even say Hello!)
I go to Legends in Holborn (Tony does a fine head shave... hot towels and a very close shave. It's £16, so it's not an everyday thing)

Arty Chris,
Is Legends this one http://www.thelegendsbarbershop.com/site/node/2
Been wanting to have a barber shave my head for ages. This place is on the way home from work. Think it's time for a professional shave. Curious to see how feels compared with the home shave and get any tips from a barber.
-
Good luck and enjoy the experience Mr. Jules. My barbershop headshave is always one of the highlights of my week.
-
Mr Jules,
It certainly is! It's a nice shop.
I had an aversion to any sort of hair cutting for many years... but had my long hair removed in there over a year ago :) and despite having tried a few other barbers (for convenience, and just to see how different it could be) have found this one to be consistently excellent!
I certainly recommend the place! Hope it's good for you!

Thanks, Chris.
Yep, I shall be going in the next week or two. Especially since they include head shave in the price list. Been sly for 5 months now, I've want a pro to shave it. Do you they use a cut throat or double edge razor ? I do hope so.
The other day, was in the barber's having my beard trimmed. Just before taking my seat for the trim, another turned to me and said "what are you in for ?". Just pointed at my beard. Like a barber could do anything with my bald head.
-
I enjoy going to the barbershop on occasion for a head shave. It feels good to be pampered every once in awhile. I have found that they I have not gotten as close a shave as I have gotten when I do it myself.
-
Mr Jules,
It's a cut throat style razor.
Let us know how it goes!

Just had a head shave The Legends barber shop in Holborn, central London.
It's quite an experience having a cut throat razor on your head. Barber does a thorough job, though not necessarily smoother than my home shaves. The skin feels better, because the barber makes sure the skin is tight as he applies the razor.
And it's great walking out of the barbers with a completely shaven head. Recommended.
-
Glad you made it in there! I was there only a day or so before you I guess!
Tony does a decent job! (Better than I can... I have a couple of awkward moles that I really need to get seen to!)
-
I usually have a barber shop headshave in October as a treat for my birthday. I have an appointment October 20 at The Art of Shaving for a straight razor head shave. I'll post pictures and a critique after the shave.

I may be in London in the February/March 2013 timeframe. If I'm able to go then I'll probably make an appointment at Geo. F. Trumper in Mayfair. Mr. Jules, I'll definitely let you know if I'll be in London.

I only went to the barbershop for a headshave when I first time shaved my head.
I have realised that I can trust no one when it comes to shaving my dome

OK, yesterday I treated myself to a headshave at Art of Shaving at Woodfield Mall. My barber, Frank, is a most congenial fellow and knows how to use a straight razor quite well. The shop has a single chair in the back. It cannot be seen from the main shop floor, so there are not distractions from curious customers. I had the Royal Shave, which is a head shave and a face shave. Art of Shaving's price for this is $55 less tip. For me a barbershop headshave is an indulgence I like to treat myself to from time to time. I give my experience at Art of Shaving four out of five stars. I would definitely go there again.

Sorry for the blurry picture, but I was taking it from the reflection in the mirror and the light was rather low.

Looks pretty neat on both of you.

Wow, Red, that looks cool......I may get a shave at AOS when I get my tax return just for the experience.....

I was just up in Level 78's neck of the woods. Wish I had seen that video before.
