Title: Disadvantage - no padding
Post by: Razor X on April 12, 2007, 07:27:57 PM
In one of my clumsier moments today, I banged the top of my head while getting out of the car.  It left a small gouge that did not even bleed, but boy does it hurt like hell!  I'm probably going to have to shave around that spot for a few days and go over the sore area with the electric razor instead of the blade.  This is the sort of injury you don't get when you have hair to provide some padding.

You aren't kidding.  I did that the other day.  I leaned in the truck window to get something and caught my head on the vent visor on the way out.  Hurt like crazy but didn't bleed.  I've got to be more careful with the noggin.

Most of the times when I crack my head like that is when I DO have a hat on. Rarely when I am topless. With a cap, my vision must be blocked a lot. But even with a cap on, it will leave a major mark up there. And being 6'2" really increases the chances.

I hate when I knock my noggin.

I bumped mine pretty good this morning when I was under a car. No blood, but it hurt like bad names and dirty words.

The same thing happened to me last week... except my sunglasses were on my head!!  Freakin' OUCH!!  But since they were beat to crap after that, it gave me the excuse to go buy the Oakleys that I've been wanting!  O0

Saw it on MaximScars.com.  Don't ask why I was there, but I randomly clicked on a link that lead me to that picture.

Yes.  And it's quite disturbing.  This coming from a guy that has more scars than a lot of people.

I believe Medic had a thread dealing with this, and ever since I read his post I have been bumping my head more than often. (he's a warlock)  :-X

Well, the simple solution is stop bumping your noggins.  b0x3r

But in all seriousness, I chatted with some friends  (a couple from NASA) about this as I have the same conserns, (as being new to the Sly look does raise questions) and asked them about this scenario. All came up with the same thing.

- If you hit your head, the level of pain is the same whether you have hair or not
- Hair is not the magical "Helmet" as it may seem to be. The level of hurt and injury is the same.
- Bald people with a head injury have an advantage over those with hair, as they can be assessed easier with the extent of the wound and emergency crews can take action quicker. Heck, they'd shave it off anyways.  Save them the trouble! ;)

If you can tell me any disadvantage, let me know.  ;)

Spoken like someone who has not yet bumped his bald noggin against anything!  Trust me, the level of pain is NOT the same, and having hair DOES provide some protection against injury.

I don't know about padding, but hair does give you an early warning system.

One thing that I have noticed is that (for the most part) I seem to be more conciously protective of my noggin.  Before going SLY, I was continually knocking my head on things (yes I have been known to be somewhat clumsy). It seemed like I could not mow the yard without scraping my head on low tree branches or hitting in on low haning light fixtures.  I am a little under 6'.  Except for the one incident with my son in the swimming pool, there have not been any incidents.  Anyone else notice being more (subconciously) protective and careful?

I know. Now that I've written this....just watch out.... :/O

I've done that a few times.  I also whacked my head against the corner of one of those windows that crank out (I was just outside it).  Thank God I had a ball cap on for sun protection or I would have had a really bad gash.

Hope your dome heals up quickly.
