I visited western South Carolina (Anderson, near Clemson) on a recent business trip, and found that most places I went, I was the only sly guy around. There are a lot of guys sporting the "Friar Tuck", but in three days, the only other sly guys I met were a couple of out of town cops from the coast who were in town for a seminar.
Living in the urban north, I see sly guys everywhere I go. This was not what I would consider a rural area, so I don't think it is a rural vs urban thing. So, my question is this... ...Do you find that being sly is a regional thing? Do you think it is loosing popularity, or is it just that it hasn't caught on in some areas?

Plenty of us in Austin!
-
I doubt it's regional. Maybe you just ran into a smaller sample size.
-
SLY is more of a global thing...

I travel some and I've noticed that some areas are more sly than others. The Northeast is highly sly, Atlanta too, NO is my personal base point for comparison. Houston is about where NO is at, Austin is higher than Atlanta, lower than the Northeast. On vacation in Western NC, some sly--mainly guys on bikes so lower than my base in NO. But, today I ran some errands after leaving the office for the three day weekend--guy in front at the grocery store, sly, and out of five people in the line, not counting the ladies, another sly guy, 3 out of 5, not bad and one of the two hirsute guys had a full head of hair. Several in my office building, this morning on the way in on the elevator three guys, including me. Two sly he was office ready in a suit--I was dressed down!

I have seen plenty of Sly guys here in the Pacific Northwest. In Seattle, Portland, Vancouver BC, being the main metro areas, there are lots! It is very common to go into a store or restaurant and see Sly guys. It may be a tiny bit less in the Inland Northwest but I still have seen plenty in Spokane and North Idaho too.

There is a proliferation of perfect pates in Pa...... :*))

It's epidemic here in California, despite the lack of people from CA on the forum.

Plenty of SLY guys in Southern California. Nice tanned noggins too. But then again, SOCAL is the home of the HeadBlade!
-
Winter in the NE sort of cuts back on the number but come Spring and Summer there they are again.
-
Plenty of smooth domes out here in AZ, and I see plenty at the airport daily as well. Watching the queue as people prepare, it's almost like every other guy is smooth shaven or buzzed tight, so there's no shortage, and these folks are travelling from all over.

I forgot to mention that, airports--everyplace--it's like the Sly Skies of America. Don't know where they all go, but I haven't been the only sly on a flight in years. Also, as I also mentioned once before, an interesting phenom--when flight problems are announced, look around, all the sly guys put their hands on their domes and rub, it's a hoot, we carry our own "blue blankets" for security in times of stress like that ;D.

Zap,
Seems like you an the other out of town guys could have been the SLY forefathers (or is it "four-fathers") of South Carolina!!

I don't think region has much to do with it, but it may not always be viewed upon the same everywhere. Sometimes it's associated with a cultural expression, eg.
In the UK it's associated with Skinheads or hooligans
In Germany and some scandinavian countries with right-wing nationalists
In arab cultures men shave their head as token of morn after the death of a beloved one etc.
In budism men shave as a expression of getting rid of the worthly desires
In some other countries as part of the coming-of-age rituals
etc.
for me personally ...... it's a fashion statement ;)

I live in one of the bigger and liberal South Carolina cities and I would say there are not many sly guys here. As a matter of fact, I try to tell my girlfriend that a lot of guys go sly but she insists that it isn't true and that most guys just work with what they have. I think this is her perception because she was raised in SC, so that is all she knows. I am originally from FL and I see sly guys all the time there.
I think it has to do with SC's conservative political and cultural climate where *most* people are old fashioned and think that shaving your head is extreme.
