Title: I can't decide..
Post by: ShadeSocks on November 13, 2010, 11:06:30 PM
I still have a lot of hair but it's still noticeably receded for a 19 year old. I feel like it would be a shame to shave it off now since I'm going to someday down the line. But I also think that I should enjoy the hair I do have while I still have it. And then the other part of me says screw hair! I just feel too young to be bald... Gah.

What to do..

Give it a shot, I was the same way before I went sly. Think of it this way if you don't like it, the hair will grow back. It should only take a few weeks to get your hair back to its normal length. (judging by your picture I would say you normally have your hair kind of short. It should only take 2-3 weeks to grow it back)

You seem to be a bit confused... bald doesn't happen to you, you GET to be bald!  :*))

Seriously, you will only know how great it is by trying it.  As much as you try to imagine, you'll never even be close!  ;)

I can grow a full head of hair but unless I'm in a coma, that ain't ever gonna happen!  O:O

There is no way to describe the feeling of water hitting your head after shaving. 8)

This all sounds major bad ass now. It's so cool having you guys respond to me directly now instead of just lurking the forums. Haha! I'm not doing anything interesting with this hair anyway. If I styled it I guess that would be a different story.

Time to be bold!

Personally, My way of thinking--I had rather be bald than balding.

You've got choices, so try sly  for 30 days then you'll know what it is.  Then try a buzz for a time.  The only thing that really doesn't go with thinning hair is long, and by long that's anything much over half an inch.  So try out the ultra short, and everything else--you'll get comfortable with it quickly, that's a promise.

Once the hairline has receded beyond a certain point -- and from your photo, it looks like you may have reached that point -- it's not really possible to "enjoy" your hair anymore.  At that point you're better off being bald, even if you're only 19.  Otherwise, you'll look back someday and wonder why you put up with the awkwardness of MPB for so long.  Balding is not a choice; bald is a choice.  You'll look and feel a lot better once your hair is gone.

It's hard at your age; I was there.  My hair started falling out when I was 17.  It was slow at first; I noticed only a few years ago that my hairline from my senior pictures the summer of 1988 to a family picture in mid 1989 had slid upward a bit.  I used to have a low hairline and so much hair that the girl at the place I got my hair cut would run her fingers through it and tell me how wonderful it was and I'd "never ever lose this hair; it was there for good."  I'm glad I never had her place any bets for me... ;D

By the time I was 21, I dated a girl that said she couldn't love anyone that went bald and would bug out over the slightest bit of thinning on the crown.  I was 23 when I met my wife; she was cool with it and one day before we were married, told me it was thin.  I worried about it incessantly and it really bugged me a lot - even though she was cool with it.  I had a job I hated at 25 and quit and shaved my head with a number 8 attachment (at the time, to me this was a shave!).  My wife freaked because she hated the look, but she got used to it.  I eventually tried to grow out what I had left and it just looked stupid; even my wife commented on how bad it looked (but she said it so sweetly that it didn't hurt).  I had also gained about 60 lbs.  I got back to skating (skateboarding), have dropped about 30 lbs (have about 30 more to go) and eventually shaved my head to the skin.  I've got some imperfections in my dome, but whatever.  Everyone does.  I've seen a lot of imperfect domes clean-shaven at church and around town.  It's all good.  I've had one friend - another skater - ask me why I shaved my head.  I've got another buddy who's dome is pretty slick but he keeps a few strands long and has a funky hairstyle... whatever.  Just roll with it.  He's married and his wife doesn't seem to mind his style.  One other guy I know is also losing his hair, too.  He won't cut it off but just wears hats.

Find what's comfortable for you.  You can change 1,000 times if you need.  If you're feeling adventurous - shave it off and see how it goes.  If not, get there in steps.  I went from an 8 to 4 to 2 to a 1 to no guard to blades and back again.  I've experimented with my hair growth combined with huge sideburns to full beard.  My wife prefers a bit of fuzz on top... maybe 'cos my melon is so freaking huge and I was so overweight, but it's still all good.

Honestly, people won't necessarily notice a shaved head.  They're going to notice how you carry yourself.  If you carry yourself like you think you're less of a man for MPB, then they're going to think that.  If you carry yourself like you're gonna gives someone a beat down, they're going to steer clear.  If you carry yourself like you don't have any cares about what all these people think, they're going to probably be drawn to you to find out why you're so cool.

Awesome responses. It feels so much better to be responded to than trolling around other pages. I definitely don't mind my hair that much. I've always kept it really short, but when my friends or other people call me bald or say that I'm losing my hair, I just don't know what to say to that. I usually just tell them "So? Who cares?" but it's annoying.

I guess I just have a problem with the people who don't accept my hair. Some people just look at my hairline while I'm talking to them. So fricken annoying.

Also, I think the reason I haven't shaved my head yet, sad to say, is that my dad already has a shaved head. For some reason I feel like we'd look too similar and I don't wanna be told that we look the same. I wanna be different! I want my own identity.. So I've kept my hair. I'll just go with the Jason Statham look for now.

:/O  So why don't you turn your Dad on to the SBG site?

Oh, and one other thing, your identity is a lot more than you hair style, a whole lot more--think about it.

If your agonizing over how to wear your hair, how to style it, etc., shave it. If you don't like the effect you can always grow back what you have. A few times I have let mine start to grow back to a buzz cut but end up grabbing the razor and shaving it off.

Post by: stasiu on December 12, 2010, 10:36:27 AM
I can relate not wanting to look my dad when I was 20 and balding as he was full blown MPB with zero buzzed fringe.  However, a couple years later I ended up looking like him (that was way back in big hair era of 1977)! Of course it did NOT help any when my older brother (still has full head of hair) referred to me as "Dad's Bald Son" at that time !

Chances are you are going to resemble your father as you grow older, whether you want to or not, ShadeSocks. Such is genetics, my friend! I shave my head, but my dad has kept his hair (he still has a lot for a 70 year old!), and people still comment to this day that I'm his spittin' image (which I practically am).

So why not try a shave? Like others have said, it'll grow back, and what will distinguish you is how you present and carry yourself. You will never know unless you give it a go. Best of luck, either way. O0

Obviously, you should do whatever you're most comfortable with. But it does seem a little backwards that your dad's sporting a more hip look than you are.  No disrespect intended.

Wellll :P I have buzzed my hair before basically bald and in fact I buzzed it down two days ago. At first I was like "Ah god, it doesn't look as good as last year" but then I started liking it a bit through the rest of that day..

UNTIL!! I came home and saw my dad sitting on the couch and the look on his face when he saw my head.. disappointment. "Why'd you cut off your hair?" he says. I told him "because I like it." I knew that was gonna freakin happen. Now I entirely regret cutting it off.

I feel obligated to keep my hair grown out somewhat. I feel like if I shave it he'll die.

I realize how backwards it is but thats the situation.

JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES AND DO IT!!!

Uh... on second thought maybe you better keep at least one eye open so you can see what and where you are shaving!! - LOL

The FREEDOM you will experience will be simply INCREDIBLE once you commit to going SLY!!

We can describe the "sly feeling" to you a thousand times over, but you will NEVER know true freedom until you take that initial step and experience it for yourself!!

It's a win-win situation. If you truly dislike the look (which I seriously doubt) your fuzz will grow back to the length it is now in a matter of weeks. As so many others have before you, take the 30-Day Challenge!! You'll be sooooooo glad you did!!

Well, you could try "talking" to your dad.  I know this is a thing that most guys don't do, or do especially well, particularly with family members (the voice of experience here).  But you might ask your dad why he shaved his head.  Explain that you think you would look better shaved than buzzed or short.  He just might understand.  Then...just do it.  Shave it off.  It will look a lot "cleaner" than buzzed.  Oh, and it will feel totally cool too!  Then you will experience the new found freedom...and it's all done!  That's it! O0

(Oh, and if you begin to realize that you rock the sly look and see that you look better than your dad...well, youth sort of has that advantage- but I didn't say that part.  ;) )

Hey

Obviously not an easy decision for anyone and we all go through it
Personally, the freedom is absolutely unbelievable and rather spending money on different ways to make what hair you have left look at best so-so, going natrual is the look

Remember: do what makes YOU feel good

Good Luck

I feel obligated to keep my hair grown out somewhat. I feel like if I shave it he'll die.

Why?  If he's got MPB and shaves himself, then surely he must understand.  When you get right down to it, the only person that is stopping you is you.  We can all think of thousands of reasons not do it; rarely are they valid.  Family members will adjust, trust me.

I hope that doesn't sound like I'm trying to push you into anything.  If you don't want to do it, then don't.  But make sure it's what you want.  Don't keep your hair grown out because you think someone else wants you to.

My honest opinion is compromise. Take it down to a #1. The recession wont be so pronounced and you'll still have a bit of hair since you really don't want to part with it altogether. If you wanna go shorter take off the guard if not keep it at a 1.

Thanks you guys.

Well I did buzz it without the guard and it's pretty bad ass. Don't think I'm ready for shaving quite yet but I assume it's only a matter of time.

I just hope that when I do go bald that I lose a lot of my hair. Haha! That way there's less to shave. I'm lazy. : P

Thats a hella awesome picture btw Jack21.

Alright I'm sure you'll all be psyched to hear that I shaved my head last night.

I really just didn't give a f*&%. My dad hasn't seen it yet though. But honestly I don't care anymore.
I stared down so many people today too. It was awesome! I feel so fierce. Like mess with me and I'll kill you. Which is exactly what I wanted because I've been trying to look more like a punk.

I'll post pictures as soon as I figure out how to use a camera. Or at least find one.

It was weird laying my head down on the pillow last night. I could feel it with my head.
But I do like the look. I just need to refine it. It was only my first time.

Plus my dad didn't say anything and I didn't bother asking his opinion so it's all good.

My dad told me I was a "fucking idiot" for shaving my head. He told me the same thing years ago when I decided to show my no so great reverence for HS graduation by shaving my head. My dad has called me a fucking idiot for just about everything I've done in my life. You'll get to the point where what your father thinks matters very, very little.
