Title: New member from the UK!
Post by: IK on September 25, 2010, 08:49:47 AM
So, after years of trying to hide it, I finally did it a few weeks ago! All going well so far. First week I shaved with an electric shaver, but then quickly moved on to a proper blade as it feels much better and lasts all day!

Now my only thing I need is a good moisturiser, that is available in the UK! Any advice? I'm using some L'oreal Men Expert Matte stuff, as I want my head to be less shiny (just personal preference), but it has alcohol in it which I'm sure can't be good long term. So, what else is out there to keep my head feeling smooth but non-shiny?

Oh, I also need some good suncream recommendations!

I definitely DON'T look better bald, but it's better than the combover look!

I've only just joined myself so take my advice with a pinch of salt.

As for sunscreen I use Coppertone Sport with a SPF of 30. I live in Japan and swim outside, with no cap on, all August and it does the trick for me. I also like the matte look and this sunscreen does make my head pretty shiny but it is a dry shine and not a greasy shine.

Thank you for the welcome everyone! I will get a photo up as soon as my scalp has adjusted to the shaving. At the moment, it hates it and is slightly spotty.

I guess some of that is down to me trying to hide my baldness for so long. I used hairspray for the last 2 years and my scalp did NOT like it. I'm guessing it needs to recover from that ordeal still?

Hey you lot! I just wanted to pop in to say I'm doing well with it all, and hopefully give some others inspiration. The irritation went quickly, and as my experience and technique has developed, I get a closer shave with less irritation.

My one tip is conditioner! I use the 34p a bottle stuff from Sainsbury's, because it works well with my head, and is cheap! Much easier to use than shaving cream/foam.

I wanted to say thanks for all the advice, and it's a great community for people!

Anyway, I promised photos... (It's been a while, I know) - Here I am!

Yep, just back the other day - It was fantastic!

I should really post up a 'before' photo, but it's too embarrassing! I've left that look firmly behind now, and have to say I get a LOT more (positive) attention now!

Welcome to the boards!

My advice on the moisturizer is to use half-and-half water and Fruit of the Earth vitamin E lotion when you get out of the shower. Make sure to rub it in really well, and then use Witch Hazel (a widely available astringent) in liberal amounts on your head to lock in the moisture. Witch Hazel closes up the pores, and if you let it air dry on your head, it leaves a nice, non greasy, low-shine look. Good luck!
