Title: To shave or not to shave.
Post by: JesseL on September 05, 2010, 11:39:11 AM
I have been lurking around here for awhile and finally decided to sign up. I was bald for a few months a while ago but decided to grow my hair out a bit, it's only at about 2 inches now but I'm considering shaving it again..I just have a few problems I'm not sure about. Firstly I'm looking for work and am unsure if this will make me look unprofessional or not, I don't have any piercings anymore or tattoos so I don't think I'd look too sketchy (not that I dont like tattoo's, plan to get a few in the future). The second problem I have is my head gets red scaley patches that flake off all the time, I'm not sure why this is, I am a redhead and have sensitive skin (in as manly a way as possible of course). Just for added info, I'm 23, soon to be 24 and am not balding in any way yet. Thanks for the help all.

Sounds like your first step is to see a dermatologist about the skin problem, it's probably minor and can be eliminated easily.  Then you can decide whether you want to be BBC.  Two steps, nothing major.

Thanks saintc, It isn't something that shows up unless I shave my head, I have read around about psoriasis (sp?) and don't think it would be that but who knows. Thank you for responding.

Jesse,

You don't have to worry about the professionalism of a shaved head.  We all are in various lines of work and rarely are there issues with a shaved head.

Like Saint said, go see a dermatologist.  Also, what are you using to shave your head?  That may be what's causing your skin condition.

jesse,

To me you skin condition sounds like psoriasis or seboric dermatitis treated usally with some form of cortisone or steroid anti-inflammatory cream. what tyler suggested is the best choice seek medical treatment and you can shave your dome anytime of the day. i do (10mins befroe and after) treatment. with treatment cream and sun the red ness is controllable in my mind you may still have it but in my case i don't itch or scratch my head anymore.

Trust me, I got more flack for my hair being long than I ever did for it being shaved.

I know some people on here have went BBC because of a case like that and they say it pretty much "cured" it.

thanks for all the responses! I ended up shaving my head yesterday, couldn't stop myself...Anyway so far i don't see any of the scaly patches i had before, there are a few red marks but way better than I expected. I'm using one of the new 5 bladed razors which seems to work pretty well, I used to use the headblade but it didn't really work for me as well as I had thought it would. Anyway I am going to ask the doc next time i see him, and in the meantime I am hoping that regular washing/moisturizing will keep me on track  8)  I forgot how much I like being bald.

Consider some kind of after shave or after shave gel to keep irritation down. Bald Guys Moisture Gel works great for me....nice cooling sensaton after the shave.
