Title: Anybody use an electric?
Post by: BigRon on August 04, 2010, 02:42:29 PM
It's my first post but I've never been one for formal introductions I want to jump right in.  My hair is thinning, I get a fade cut right now w/ a #1 on the sides and a #2 on top but the top is getting too thin, it's time to shave it off and man up.

My problem is that I've never used a real razor in my life.  Yupp I always shave my face with an electric.  It seems easier, I like it, I never cut myself, I can do it while watching TV, no shaving cream, etc.

Does anybody buzz their head all the way down with an electric? Sort of like a Jason Statham look (the guy from the transporter movies).  He's bald, his hair is extremely short, but he doesn't quite have the cue-ball look.

sometimes it's even shorter than that... Can't find a picture but I'm sure you fellas know what I'm talking about.

Thoughts on this? or do I need to really man up and get a blade and some shaving gel..

Hi there,

you can use clippers or an electric to get the look you want. I basically starteds on clippers, than no guard clippers, than a straight electric, and now I use headnblade. Like you I had never shaved with anything other than electric before, but I found starting ot use headblade bpretty easy (Well except for maybe the first time which did cause some bloodshed   :XX

Good luck though! Once you start buzzing you'll get the itch to get closer and closer....

thanks for the response.  that's how I figured it would go.. i'd buzz it, and eventually I'd want it closer and closer.  I'm just not ready for the shiny look, i've had hair my whole life, takes some getting used to.  I'll embrace it soon enough though =)

Hi BigRon,

I went the same route as marcx.
Keep in mind that even when you're shaved smooth you probably will have a shadow that looks almost the same as a very short buzzcut. The feeling, however, is completely different. There's nothing like a smooth dome!

Panasonic ES8243K! I started off using a Gillette Sensor, moved on to the HeadBlade, and bought the Panasonic a year or so ago. I use it if I'm in a hurry or if I'm nursing a better than average cut (like I am now). There's always a little bit of fuzz but nothing to worry about.
Think about a pre-shave like Lectric Shave or Mennen Afta. For some reason the shave goes faster and the end result is smoother than without the lotion. Just make sure you clean the blades thoroughly. The Panasonic is a wet/dry so I can use it in the shower. Cleaning is also easy because I just submerge the razor head in hot water with some Dawn dish soap and run it for a few seconds to get the gunk off.

^^ awesome thanks for the responses guys!

Since I'm going to have the unfortunate horseshoe shadow either way, I'll definitely start with clippers.  I don't care how it feels really.

I saw a thread on this forum about a con air product for shaving your head, called clean head or something.  I'll check that out in stores, and I'll check out the Panasonic ES8243K too

here it is for anyone interested, just found it

I started with 1/16 guard, then no guard...next Gillette Fusion.

Others here recommend Thayers Witch Hazel as an astringent. After using it myself for a month every morning, I wanted to through in my recommendation as well.

Guys, if you want a good close electric shave the Panasonic Linear works great.  It is a wet/dry shaver, but I wouldn't dare use it without a good lubricant.  This is about as close as you can get with an electric.  My best results with it is using a bit of olive oil.  I've used Bald Guys shaving cream and it works OK, but the oil give you an extra bit of protection that you might want so this shaver won't bite!  O0

I've been hearing good things about the Conair Cleanhead though, and the price is great.
I'm looking to get one of those myself.
