Title: Hello
Post by: Timbo1941 on July 27, 2010, 09:11:45 PM
Hello. I'm thinking of shaving my head for the first time and feeling a lot of hesitation. But I thought I would get some input here and read the experience of others. Thanks
Timbo

Welcome aboard...digg around, you'll find plenty of stories, helpful hints and comradarie within these pages of internets. Tomorrow marks my 30th day straight shaving the scalp and i have learned tons in the short time I have been here. Quit thinking about it and do it....and if you don't like it....it will grow back!!  ;)

This support is great. Just having a place to ask is a real help.
I haven't made up my mind all the way yet, but assuming I go through with it I am going to ask my barber to do the job; his shop is in the building where I work now. I've been going to him for 12 years. Do most guys have a barber shave their heads the first time, or do it themselves?
(There's probably  whole thread on this here - so sorry if it is off topic.  O0)

I would think the majority shaved it themselves first, but more first have a barber buzz it as close as possible.  But, a $10-15 clipper from Wal-Mart will do the same, and is useful to have around for trimming purposes if you decide to add a chin mitten later.

I think actually shaving yourself is such an exhilarating sensation that it shouldn't be missed--I think the guys that have done it remember the experience as one of the most memorable in their adult lives.

Welcome here, Timbo.
The thought is in your mind, well let's see how long it lasts till you do the deed.

May be you chose the way "step by step" - buzzing shorter and shorter and then you'll take
the blades and shave the rest  O0

Good luck and best wishes you will like it  8)

Welcome Timbo.  So glad you came to the right place for information and support.  As has been said, you have the itch.  You won't rest until you have the scratch.  Many have said to do it yourself, for me I had the barber do it for me.  IMO I don't think I could have had the nerve to do it.  Everyone is different.  And of course, it does grow back.  The feeling after the first shave is unreal. There is a numb feeling on the scalp that can't be described properly.  It is just AWESOME.  The kind of feeling you wish would never go away.  But perhaps the best thing about shaving you head, it also shaves years off your appearance.  At my age, what could be better?   Good luck with your decision.  We are behind you all the way.

I just went to my barber and he buzzed it down.  First to a #3 on top and #2 on sides.  Then 'cause I'm real thin on top I asked for a #1 all way around.  I wore it that way for a couple of weeks before shaving.  I've been shaving daily since.
By the way, Welcome!

Thanks for the posts. I see the same idea many times: once the idea is in my head, I won't be satisfied until I try it.

The decision making process goes on.

The comments - and the pics - are a real help. I realize I am in a very small minority on this thread: I am not bald! Getting rid of my hair will produce a very different image and look. I look forward to it, but I have to admit that I am hesitant about how people will respond. But it's true that there is only one way to find out.  ;D

Welcome Timbo!

As experience shows, hesitation is absolutely unnecessary.
Just make up your mind and act.
You can be a bald guy pretty fast.

And in case you'll need it, don't hesitate ( ;)) to ask us for support. We're always here to help.

Welcome to the forum Timbo. I will echo what the other guys have said, you won't know until you try it.
If the thought is in your head, you just gotta do it. After you do I'll bet you will wish you had done it sooner, so don't wait!  Get it done.   O0

My barber thinks it's a great idea too after I asked him about it yesterday so he agrees with you. 8)

As I said on another thread I m starting a new job in two weeks and I want to have a new look to go with the new job, so a shaved head would be a new look - and maybe a beard too. A lot of guys here combine the beard with a bald head. That would be a major change altogether - a different image.

Congrats on the new job and your new start on life. You're in the right position now, especially to shave it smooth. Think of it as a whole new beginning. I can really relate to you Tim because I went through the same type of thing as you're going through, three years ago just this past month. A total life change.
I can only encourage you to go with it, remember you're making a fresh path in your life, practically starting over. What better way to do it than go out there and try something you know you want to do?

I think you're going to be fine. Hang in there and face it proudly, feel the confidence that will come over you when you do the things you want to do. Put it out there.

I will definitely want to hear how things go for you, and if you need any more help, or to talk about the change of life, you can also pm me.

Good luck!    O0
