OK, it's confession time. I have to admit, that although most of the time I am perfectly happy with my bald head, I do occasionally have moments that I miss having hair. It usually happens after seeing someone in a movie or on TV with a full, thick mop of hair.
I've also experienced that "Seinfeld moment", when after about two years of regular shaving, I ran my hand over my head one evening, and felt the stubble along the sides and back of my head -- but I was still smooth on top. That was the moment I realized that I was bald -- not just shaved, but really BALD. Forever. I was long past the point where it should have mattered, but it still bothered me a bit - briefly.
Has this happened to anyone else here?

I've only been shaving about three weeks, so I haven't yet reached the point where I imagined having hair again. When I see someone's flashy hairdo on TV, it reminds me of how happy I am being different. Shaving feels more "me" than any hairstyle ever did.
It sounds weird, but I hope I don't lose my hair because I like having something to shave off in the morning. I'm hooked on the shaving process. Though I do like the thought of not having end-of-day stubble on top.

The first time I went sly was a year ago last November, my wife didn't like it so I caved in and grew my hair back. I really missed the freedom and felt like I wasn't being true to myself. Finally last month I told my bride I was really sorry but I had given it a year and it just wasn't me. I dug out my HeadBlade and have been very happy ever since.
There's nothing like Sly for this guy! O:O Hair is for squares! :*))

Can't say that it did with me... I knew I was bald before I started shaving it!
Since I've been sly for somewhere around 3 years now, I'm actually very judgemental looking at "hairy" people... and wondering what they're thinking with what they're doing with their hair!
-
In the past 6 years, I've let my hair grow out (over an inch) about twice a year just to see if it's still there.... probably could just go by how clogged my razor gets.
As far as confidence, I have a lot more of it without hair.... you know? Nothing there to look sloppy. No funny smell from product. Also, the headrub is the new handshake :)
Yeah, I went there.
SHINE ON!!!

Yeah, sometimes I wonder what I would look like now with hair. That is if it would grow in like it use to soooo long ago. Sometimes I'll check out some of my old pics where I had a full head of hair when I was like 11 and 12. Just to look back though. Not regretting anything because I love being sly and would never change that. Even if I had hair though, I think I would still feel more confident with the sly look as ricecub has stated.
-
I agree I see other men with balding heads and wonder if they are thinking about shaving it. I like it so much better than hair. Hair was just a big pain in the butt for me. Being Military I had to get it cut every 1-2 weeks and there is nothing more depressing than seeing the barber holding the 15-20 strands of hair on the top of your head trying to trim them to make it look decent. Those were the only real times I told myself man your bald. Now I don't even think about my head till the stubble comes in.
-
I agree with you Dtopford about military haircuts. though i'm not military, i admire their haircuts. i always a crewcut or a hnt and was getting it cut every 2 to 3 weeks. Then I bought my own pair of clippers and would cut it every week. What a pain and the cleanup! So I took the plunge last May and shaved my head clean. So much easier! I like the feel of my clean scalp and the smoothness. And I look better with a shaved head. No more gray!
Keep it sly.

SHINE ON!!!
You crazy diamond!
My mother-in-law is about the only person that asks me about growing my hair back. She knew me way back when I had decent blonde hair (my wife and I started dating when we were 15 and now I'm 30, but I digress). She asks how much I'd have now. To be honest, I'm not all that interested in finding out. I do get a kick out of showing my kids pictures of Dad with hair. They are too young yet to razz me about it though. Can't wait for that!!!! :P
-
Razor X please,I know exactly how you feel.Try reading some of my other posts.Even though I keep my thinning hair cut close,I still have my moments whenever I see someone with a full head of hair. For the most part I'm used to this cut but there are still some people that I won't let them see me without my piece.I think for the rest of my life there will be some people I let see me natural and some I won't. If that's what works for me fine. You have to do what makes you most comfortable regardless of what others say.

It's probably because of the frustration of not having the choice. (I know :'( )
It's easy to go like "wooweee! I'm slick & sly and if I get tired of this I grow a full bush again" for those people it's a true fashion statement that they support 100% no doubt, for real baldies/those on the path to baldness however, it's more like a compromise you have to find yourself in. Sort of an acceptance of that which you didn't always wanted at first to be happy with yourself again.
Honestly I'd prefer having long hair to being bald, maybe some of you think that's crazy.. it's not like I don't really like being sly at times but it's just that I'd liked to have gotten a choice in the matter. :-\
(you hearing me supreme being?! Next incarnation better, you hear! :x! >:D )

SBG, like your bold honesty!! Have to admit, there are moments, not very often though, that I wish I could grow a head of thick hair.
Slick & Sly is better than Lame & Thinning!!
Wait a second I'm actually glad to be the real bald me. No second thoughts about this.

That's not crazy. Everyone's got a personal preference. Maybe it's a little easier to accept the earlier you shave it off, so that it's more of a choice. Then again, some guys here were 30 or 40+ when they went sly. I've had long hair before. My hair is just so thin, curly, and unmanageable. I've got a high hairline with good coverage, but I like that I don't care either way whether it goes in ten or twenty years. I've honestly never looked or felt better. For me, it's not just a fashion statement, it's a mindset and an attitude change. And not just for me, but for society, which has accepted buzz cuts and shaved heads.
-
I'm finding that a good cure for those "I want hair" moments is to pull out some photos of yourself that were taken shortly before you shaved it all off. Seeing the thinning, recession, and bald spots helps you take off the rose-colored glasses and remember what your hair would really be like and why you chose to get rid of it.
The comparison should not be a full head of hair vs. bald, because that full head of hair is no longer an option and thus no longer matters. The comparison is the hair you would have if you didn't shave vs. a completely bald head. And the completely bald head wins every time.
Visiting this board is also a good confidence-booster when you feel you need it.

Hey there, bald brothers!
I'm new on this forum but not a bald newbie.
I will have been sly for 25 years within the next couple of weeks and every time I've grown (some) hair, it just reminded me why I went bald!
-
Welcome! Nice avatar, you look kinda like Shrek.

Welcome bro!! I think you have us beat when it comes to how long you've been Sly.
-
Thanks for the welcome.
The choice of going sly was easy, my hair grew VERY weird...

I will say that there have been the occasional moment where I miss the Hair as well... For one: Hats, all of my hats are fitted for my rather pooffy mane. Other than that, I have not missed it; & that issue is easily rectified with a Bandana!
I would never go back. I rock the look for the long haul!

I have a lot of admiration for anybody who had the confidence and balls to go with the sly look 25 years ago when head shaving was a true rarity. O0

Mr. Clean, you would be committing a crime if you went back! :popo You have got the perfect bald head. Why would you even consider covering it up with hair?
-
Speak for yourself RazorX, You have a Perfectly Shaped dome as well! O0
As for me, why do you think I continued to shave it after I went through with my payment for the bet? Some Guys Just swing it better than others... Examples: Ty, Paul, yourself... Etc. YR*(k

The truth for me is....I was dealt a bad hand (that is, if you wanted hair) by genetics.
If I had a full head of hair, I don't think I'd go BBC (bald by choice). However, since my destiny was to be bald, going SLY has been a great experience for me. Plus, I've met some great guys along the way. All in all, going SLY has been awesome.
Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday evening.

I don't have those moments anymore. I know that I feel better without hair than I ever did with it, and even though I could have it back if I wanted, the guy with hair is dead to me.
-
I could have a full head of hair if I wanted it.. I just don't want it! I love shaving, I love how it looks, I love how it feels, I love how it makes me feel.. that list could go on forever.

Welcome FBP. 25 years? Man, you are like a "hall of famer" of shaving the dome.

I'm with Cam....1000%. I know it's easy to say for dudes that can grow their hair if they wanted to, but look at it this way....at least if you're a MPB dude and are kinda forced to be "sly", you're living in a time when dudes actually CHOOSE to not have any hair on their heads and love the look and society has almost completely embrassed it as a "hairstyle"...
imagine being a bald dude in the 70's...are you kidding....talk about a hard time.....
The time to be sly is now my brothers....this cat ain't ever going back to the hairy side...
slick and sly is just way too cool!
-
I agree Andre, but I don't refer to being SLY as either a "hairstyle" or (gasp) a "hairdo"...
I call it a "HAIR DON'T".
I've seen a few SLY guys around town and mentioned that and they've said they had never heard that before. But, they liked it.
-
Whoah....I went shopping for a Sea Doo recently.....and found that the only thing I could afford was a Sea DON"T.
-
Since this thread has been going, I've gone without shaving the dome for two days. To be honest............... it's driving me nuts! Tomorrow afternoon, I'm looking forward to taking Miko (my dog) on a 4 mile run and then showering up and I'm bringing out the HeadBlade and HeadSlick and cleaning up the dome.
Oh by the way, I'm loving the Schick Extreme3 as a face razor. When I started shaving the dome 4 months ago, I decided to ditch the old Gillette Sensor to go to a Gillette Atra so I'd only have to buy one type of replacement blade. Well, the Atra absolutely stunk for my face (love it for my dome). So, I went with the Extreme3 after seeing the cost of blades for both the Fusion and the Mach3 :o . The Extreme3 is about 40-50% less and still has the closeness of a multiple blade shave. Check it out.
Cheers!

I agree. It must have been awful to be experiencing hair loss in those days, when the fashion was calling for more, not less, hair and shaved heads were virtually unheard of.
It's guys like you, Andre, who chose to shave full heads of hair, who made headshaving "sly". Otherwise, it would just be something that MPB guys do because they "have to", instead of a cool fashion statement.

No Offense brother, but, ya...

Oh by the way, I'm loving the Schick Extreme3 as a face razor. .
Which one -- the regular or disposable? I have a few of the disposables on hand for emergencies if I run out of Mach III blades. That happened recently and when I was out shopping they were all out of them at the store, so I used the Schick Extreme 3 disposables for a few days. It did do a decent job, though I did give myself the worst nick on the side of my head that I have ever had. Would not stop bleeding for a long time and left a nasty scab for days afterwards. I've found that while these razors do leave me feeling just as smooth right after I shave, the stubble seems to return more quickly than with the Mach III.
I'm guessing that the non-disposable is a little better. If you think it's equivalent to the Mach III, I may give it a try. Are you using it on your head too? I'm not as picky about what I use to shave my face. Before I had the goat, I could never get my chin completely smooth no matter what I used. Now I only have to shave my neck and my cheeks and getting those smooth is rarely a problem.

I'm one of those dudes that lost his hair in the late seventies when I was about 22 and it was hell. All you got back then was made fun of or stared at.People could be ignorant asses. It's much easier for young guys today.I hope all those bastards who made me feel uncomfortable are bald now.LOL. Now at 50 short cropped thinning hair is normal. You know mother nature is a woman.Only a woman would do that to a very young guy.Think about it.You notice that women usually don't lose their hair.LOL.I just feel silly tonight.

I use the non-disposeable Extreme3 on my face, RazorX. I am a HeadBlade Classic user for my head (generic Atra catridges). I also use the Ex3 for touching up around the ears. With the Fusion blades running around $3.25 each and Mach3 around $3, I thought $1.85 for the Extreme3 blades was a no brainer. The shave quality is awesome.

Actually...

Hey RazorX,
I agree with you about missing my hair at times. Sometimes I'm a little jealous when I see a guy with a great head of hair. It would be nice to have a great do at times. I'm not actually bald yet, it's by choice.

Dude, I do not miss anything of having a full head of hair... I don't miss the amount of time that it took to style it, I don't miss the fact that I could not rock certain styles due to my hair type, I do not miss the flacky look that hair gel gets when its been more than two hours since you applied it.
As far as I am concerned, I feel sorry for the guys with a full head of hair. Think about it from this perspective: They have something that they can easily mess up, Dandruff is a pain in the backside for some, and the Bald look is a hell of alot more solid/original/a turn on to the opposite sex than a great do can be. As far as I see it, I have the better end of the deal. I am BBC as well, hell, I even started a facebook group titled "BBC", I could have a full head of hair, but dude, I will shave every morning for the rest of my days as I see it now.
BBC for life, Sly always. Rock on Richard & RazorX and realize that you have been dealt a winning hand!
-
I'm also bbc.. for the last 9 years. My hair grows so fast.
and yes I've just recently shaved after 2 months .. and 2 hair cuts.. I usually do this once a year or so.
but bald is the way..

You're right there. I had a bald spot in my wedding pictures from 34 years ago (June 16), but I don't think I was aware of it then, since it was in back. But my hair started falling out really quick then. The 70's were not a good time for that. It didn't bother me when guys made fun of it, but it really bothered me when women teased me.

How the worm has turned... Now its the Bald Guys who seam to be getting the ladies; The guys still make fun of us though, atleast its because now we pull better women compared to them!

my hair used to be real long, but the receeding hairline started when I was about 20. I said F@#% it, I'm not going to watch it all fall out. I picked up the dog clippers and never looked back.
