Title: Well.... I think it might just be that time
Post by: Franco on July 13, 2010, 05:58:59 PM
I'm currently 20 years old and have been noticing my balding since age 17. My dad rocks the coldasack look but it just really isn't for me. I kind of knew balding might be in my future but before i noticed it I always had a great thick head of hair.

Anyway, I am looking for some of your guys opinions on whether i should go bald or not. I am losing it in the front and back and have combed my hair forward and for a while it had helped. In August i'm transfering from community college to UCSB and am wondering if I should just show up with the sly look.

Here are some pictures.

This one is just me with it combed forward, it is not looking at its best but it gives you an idea.

Now here are some in the front and back when my hair is combed back to show how bald i really am.

I have been going back and forth whether to shave it or not. My friends don't really say too much but they all know and they are all waiting for me to shave it. I think for their own entertainment haha but I don't really care. I am hopeing i will look decent bald, but it is a really tough decision for me. I figure i'll be swimming a lot down there and such so im thinking it just might be the way to go.

After reading a lot on these boards today it seems like no one regrets going bald. So im thinking tomarrow might be the day. What do you guys say?

New school, new start, new look.  And you won't be the dude that's "Going Bald."  Get in front, get in control.

I will be the opposition. Cut it shorter and shorter and see where it goes. DOnt shave it all at once. You still have quite a bit of hair but at age 20, I can see the other side.

Welcome, I think you would look great, you're already a good looking guy with a good shaped head. Noone at your new school will know any difference if you had hair or not before you came there. You might try buzzing it first then shaving won't be that far away. I know it will be your decision, but, it sounds like you're heading in the right direction.  O0

Franco,

Go for it! I sort of agree that you should take some trimmers, take the attachment off, and just go for that look there. You will have more of a buzzed look, and will be able to see what you will look like completely bald. I went bald very early too (19, now 26) and have been shaving my head since 20.

I started by getting a good pair of clippers, they actuall have "Balding Clippers" a good pair by WAHL that you can google them probably. Sort of expensive at like 60 bucks, but hey thats only a few hair cuts. Thats how I got used to it, but looking back on it now, I should of just went for it right off the back, I got there eventually, and it was very quick from trimming everyday, to shaving clean, letting it grow back for a day or two, to finally shaving every single morning, and feeling very weird if I don't!

Just go for it, you'll look great, and the ladies LOVE it! Some won't, but there are so many fish in the sea, and you can't continue to worry about what other's are going to think. Screw them. Focus on your own self confidence and freedom!

I shaved the domepiece at the start of my junior year at UCSB. One of the best decisions I've ever made. The feeling of the IV sun beating down on the sly dome cant be beat

I went to college away from family and shaved it off completely.
I'm so glad I did.  It's the best opportunity you can get. No one knows you were
not bald before so they will not question you.  Then you can come back see your friends
and family with confidence.  Best of luck to you.

Welcome to the forum Franko.  I hate to say it, but the handwriting is on the wall (head).  Of course the decision is up to you.  You can continue to fret over hair loss, or you can nip the problem in the bud.  Be free and proud!

i would do it. if you don't like it, you have enough hair still to let it grow back. it's a win-win, really.

recommend shaving it down to a number one first, once you see how that looks, you can decide how much shorter to go.

Go for it  - -you will enjoy it and remember - -it grows back if you do not like it  - - -but also remember the 30 day rule (you must keep it BALD for 30 days)

I say clip it very close at first and see if you like it, if you do then go sly.

The hairloss is definitely noticeable, and you will no doubt think about it all the time.  Once you shave it all off, the feeling of liberation is incredible.  There is no more worrying about 'losing' your hair.  It's gone, and you can find something else to worry about... or just enjoy your new life.  College is the perfect time to make the change.  Good luck!

so i gave myself a 0 all around. It doesn't look bad, what im really frusterated about is that i have red spots where the skin is peeling all on the back of my head. Anyone know of anyway i can treat this? I am hoping it is just from having bad dandruff because those were the area were i did itch a lot. Hopefully just using some lotion and creams will take it a way after a while.

WOW - what a difference.  I think it looks really  good.  Now to shave it down all the way.  Looking at the spots it deffinatly lookslike irritation, maybe to shampoo or something.  Good thing is one you shave it down you dont need any of those hair products which might be causing the irritation

I think you should try using an exfoliant to clear that up before you go to the razor!  ;)

Naked and FREE....You are a good looking guy---Please do not do the "ME" and wait 20 years too late.  I have NEVER been happier--and I am a happy dude and have been very blessed in my life.    My best friend of 40 years finally got home from vacation and saw me today---Sly since the 4th of July--and said, "I told you to do that 10 years ago!".....My wife loves rubbing aloe on it!  Life is what you make it---make it fun!

You can either spend countless hours in front of the mirror worrying about your receding hair or you can be free in a few minutes and never worry about it again.  I know the obvious choice, and I think you do too!

Most excellent!  Many guys like Schro have found that when they shave it slick and keep it that way, simple irritation or even cases of psoriasis (sp?) clear up in due time once the hair is gone.  Keep looking through the various posts, and you should find answers to those issues.  Looking forward to the final picture...

Scrape the grape--use a little mild antibacterial soap and some astringent, those spots will clean up.  Welcome, you're almost home & free.

I also had those bumps, and they didn't go away until I shaved my head completely and applied a little cortisone a few times a day. You can get it at any drugstore; personally, I prefer the gel.

When I first started out as a sly guy 10 years ago, I read online that shaving your head won't make dandruff and similar issues go away...as you've probably figured out, it's a scalp condition, not a hair condition. But the good news is that shaving exposes the source of the problem, so treating it is much easier than if you have hair.

Also, a little sun on the scalp might help. REPEAT: A little sun.  :)

Aloha Franco,

You're looking good as an (almost) Sly guy should. FYI - there is a great article titled "How to Shave Your Head" Going Bald by Choice - Professional Advice by Dave Alexander, About.com guide. Under Step 2: Shave, he talks about new shavers and recommends shaving only with the grain fopr a few weeks before going against it as it may cause cuts, irritation, and ingrown hairs.

The url is: http://menshair.about.com/od/malecelebrityhairstyles/a/headshave.htm
Good luck, the Bald Kahuna

The ONLY way to know if yu will truly like the sly look is to close your eyes (but NOT while shaving) dive right in, and shave that puppy off.

Curiosity will always eat away at you if you don't go with your gut feeling. From your post, it sounds like you're more than ready to take the plunge,...

Welcome Franco, you look great. The spots will go away, just apply some mild medication, or use some medicated soap and in no time, you'll be looking good. Wait till they clear up before shaving all the way, you could irritate them more. It will give you time to get used to the shaved look.
