This is one of the hardest areas for me to keep sly. The hair eems to grow down. so against the grain seems to be an upward motion, but I find that if I do that, the area that would essentially be the top of the horshoe is prone to niks/bumps/irritations etc...if I only go front to back and vice versa it doesn't get irritated, but also doesn't get fully smooth--anyone else have this issue ofr have suggestions?

I shave as if I had hair growing all over - -I know what you mean by the top of the "horseshoe" - -"the NO GROW zone" - -I lather the entire head and shave it - - -and it works for me - - - -try it for a while - - - -

But what direction do you sahve that area--fron to back, up and down, or both?

hey bro,
what i do is i go front to back first with the headblade. and then i relather, and go up the sides with the gillette proglide. i know you said you get burn/bumps when you go up, but maybe try switching shave gels and/or razors? also, spend more time on the prep (soaking with warm water, etc). and once you rinse with COLD water, try rubbing an ice cube in the areas prone to bumps. hope that helps you O0

marcx - - -he is correct in telling you to try different products - - -In the year that I have been SLY BALD- -I think I have tried everything - - I have had the bumps - -the lumps etc. etc. and eventually it all works out and believe me it is worth it - - -again - -I love being SLY BALD

I agree--I think too that ene though the senors i'm using now may be a bit closer, I think I haed less irritation with the HB trips--I may go back to them....or try the senor trips instead of the doubles

I go front to back, then back to front, with my HB. If I really want to get that area even more smooth, I reapply cream, and take a regular razor, pull my ear down, and shave up. Be careful not to nick your ear... you'll regret it. I usually don't bother doing this because the only way that area doesn't feel smooth is I move my fingers straight up. If I feel that area any other way, it is smooth from the first 2 HB passes. I use generic Atra twin blades, BTW.

I’m with you on this one Marx, my hair grows down on the side so I have to use two different razor to make sure the sides are smooth as possible. The HB does a very good job at leaving the back very smooth but a poor job on the sides and top of the head. So I use the M5 both on the sides and top portion. However I have to press very firmly with the M5 on the sides to make sure it’s smooth. The top is another thing. After 10 months of shaving the top, it’s still not as used to the shaving as the sides and back of my head since those areas have been shaved for almost 30 years. Try pulling your skin upward with your fingers during shaving as it will expose the hair to the blade and shave it smoother. Give it a few runs with the blade should work for you.

Yup--tis is exactly what I mean--Smooth front to back or down towards--roughif I move up....! Leaving it alone may be the best choice! :)

M5 here, I go after the horseshoe after cleaning up the sparse stuff on top, then shave up on the back of the head and the sides, then front to back on the sides--smooth as a baby's butt everytime.

I would try the Sensor3's and make sure that you are keeping it hydrated and lubricated well. I usually lather up and let it sit. When it feels like it's drying. I rinse and relather. Then I shave.

I take my free hand and stretch my scalp tight and then shave against the grain several times(strokes). I stay slick all day.
