I'm not sure if this topic has been addressed before but since its one of my favorite topics I figured we could see what types of beer we all enjoy.
Texas brews I enjoy include Real Ale Firemans 4, St. Arnold's Lawnmower and all things Shiner related.
If I can't find one of them I'll reach for Sam Adams. If it comes down to it I'll settle for a Budweiser. I will not drink a light beer under any circumstance.
Anybody know of any good micro breweries? St.Arnold's is one out of Houston. New Belgium Brewing out of Fort Collins, CO puts out a quality brew as well.
-
All things Abita, particularly Amber and TurboDog. H/o even Abita can't make lite and beer anything but an oxymoron. When offered light beer, whatever brand, my preference is to take my water straight.
-
FREE is always my beer of choice! ;D
I usually keep some Yeungling in the fridge though. I won't do light beer either, except ....... well see above sentence!
I like ESB by Red Hook and recently got turned on to Flat Tire. Thanks! (you know who you are) O0
-
Gotta admit, when I was in New Orleans, I tried Abita and it was very, very good.
Yuengling black & tan is outstanding also.
I like most beers, but am partial to Fat Tire, Sierra Nevada, and Red Hook IPA.
-
I love Guinness.... on draught please. It's not the same out of those "widget cans".
I recently tried Shiner Bock and loved it.
Also... last weekend I tried Dead Guy Chocolate Stout. Outstanding but really a brew for real beer drinkers. Very dark and malty and a nice chocolate after taste. It's now in my "rotation" at my favorite Pub.
-
New belgium brews are my favorite. But since louisiana sucks and i can't get that here, i stick to abita. Amber is good. Golden is good. Not too much on the fruity stuff. Do like a good murphy's stout. And of course guiness!!!
-
Guinness, Yuengling (though I haven't had it since living in Philly, 12 years ago!), Fat Tire and I love those high alcohol content Belgian brews that come in a wine bottle with a cork!!!
-
New belgium brews are my favorite. But since louisiana sucks and i can't get that here,
Paulie, they sell Chimay in the City, Martin's has it. As a guy I knew who was from France said, "After some Chimay, She may, but then she may not ;D"
-
Let's see... if I just want something with a meal, make it a wheat beer like Hoegaarden or Leinenkugel with a slice of lemon. Drinkability with lots of flavor. For extended bar time, draft Guiness is superb. If I just want to get hammered, Steel Reserve is the way to go followed closely by PBR (if I'm broke or feel like stretching the evening out a little). Sam Adam's Octoberfest is pretty damn good, but not always available. Coors Light for beer pong.
Nastiest beer ever (IMO) is Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout.
-
I have to agree with GAslick - free is always a good choice. I am not a beer snob, but I have to agree that Shiner Bock rocks - for those of you who aren't familiar with it, it's a Texas beer.
-
To be honest I've never had beer (I'll be 21 in July) but Ive had plenty of wine. We have a few good breweries/distilleries in the area though like Couer d Alene brewery, Dry Fly, and a bunch of others. Washingtons wine region is growing too but some say its too 'snobbish'. In a couple-few weeks I'll report back on Washington/Idaho beers.
-
FREE is always my beer of choice! ;D
what a coincidence! it's also my favorite choice!!! hahaha!
but seriously...PABST BLUE RIBBON! NEW CASTLE BROWN ALE!!! GUINNESS!!! AND FOR SOME REASON, TECATE AND ST. PAULIE GIRL FROM TIME TO TIME!!! `Dr!n# b!3r $#*t B@^ LIGHT BEER SUCKS!!!
-
oh and i forgot...BLUE MOON IS PRETTY GOOD AS WELL
-
I can't believe that two of you guys actually mentioned Pabst Blue Ribbon. That stuff was crap 30 years ago and I'm betting, because I won't dare taste it (flashbacks you know), that it's still crap!! :*))
-
Rolling Rock - -for years - - - -when I drink beer - - -I am a Bombay Saphire man most of the time though - - -love a good martini
-
I have tried the Yuengling and really enjoyed it. It sounds like I need to find some of this Abita brew to try out.
Mike, very few folks really enjoy beer the first time they try it. Just keep drinking till you do like it!
If I'm looking to go cheap I'll reach for some Lone Star. It's actually not to bad for the price.
Schro, I've past up the Sierra Nevada a few times but if you really enjoy it I'll pick up a sixer and try it out.
Crazy Irish Celt, I do enjoy wheat beers, St.Arnold's Wheat, so if I can find Hoegaarden & Leinenkugel I'll try it out.
-
i enjoy:
guinness
harpoon ipa
widmer heffeweizen
sam adams and sam adams seasonals
carling
sierra nevada
-

Back in my college days, we used to go to a dive that served Stroh's on tap -- anyone remember that beer? I'm assuming it still must be around somewhere. We actually liked it - something tells me I might not now.

Being a proper Bostonian-in-exile, I like Sam Adams. When I lived in Boston, I was a member of the local homebrew society. Periodically we'd have our meetings at the Sam Adams brewery, which is neat.
In a few weeks, Brewfest will be occurring in Portland, OR. I'm planning on attending. I might even wear my kilt if I can get into it.

I'll tell ya what's nasty--Genny (Gennessee) Cream Ale. My ex-wife's father used to drink that stuff like water when he was alive, and the locals call it River Piss!
-

I think that it's still around. Has anyone heard of "Narragansett"? It was out of Rhode Island when I was a kid, but it's since disappeared.
-
Anybody ever try arrogant bastard? That stuff is hard to drink. Cool bottle though!
-

My brother in law gave me a case of that for my birthday (don't know if he was trying to tell me something).
It's not bad. Not my favorite, but not bad.
Another couple of NorCal beers that I've always loved are Red Tail (Hopland Brewing Co) and Red Seal (Mendocino).
-
texanron: Great thread. I'm surprised this topic hadn't come up sooner.
I guess I'm one of the younger guys responding so forgive my limited palette.
My favorites are Stella Artois, Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams, Budweiser, Guinness, Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat, most varieties of Terrapin (their brewery is 30 min up the road from me!), some Sweetwater varieties, and most IPAs. Only a few stouts have appealed to me so far. Never afraid to try a new beer!
EDIT: Forgot Newcastle and *gasp* Natural Light (it left an impression on me in college)

Stroh's is still around! In my 20's I loved that crap.... I had a friend who's brother was a delivery man for Stroh's and he would sell it to us for $4 a case!!! I tried one a year or so back out of nostalgia. Tasted like Pabst!!!! Yuck!
-
BEER! YEAH! As long as I can see through it! :D I'll drink to that!!! `Dr!n# b!3r B33r
See, you drink the stuff that tastes good to ya, then, after the first few, you can drink just about any of 'em! :*)) :*))
-
heineken, yuengling, blue moon, and my new favorite>>> sweetwater 420. if U haven't tried out sweetwater 420.... U gotta try it atleast once. it's a brewery based out in atlanta.

After visiting Europe, I have to say I rarely drink US brewed beer anymore. Though, there are some that I will buy. Here's a list of my favorite imports and domestic beer:
Imports:
St Bernardus Apt 12 - Belgium
La Fin Du Monde Tripel - Belgium
Leffe Blonde - Belgium
Triple Karmelite - Belgium
Hitichino Lacto Stout - Japan
Domestic:
Left-hand Brewing Milk Stout
BJ's Porter
Deschuttes Brewery Black Butte Porter
Blue Moon
Negra Modelo Especial (Even if it's from Mexico it's still like a domestic)
Lost Coast Brewery Downtown Brown
Monk's Cafe Flemish Sour Ale - If you're in Philly go to Monk's Cafe
-
I drink Sam Adams, exclusively.
-
Good old Miller Lite is my beer of choice. I truly like the taste of beer though and haven't really found one I didn't like
-
Gotta admit, when I was in New Orleans, I tried Abita and it was very, very good.
Yuengling black & tan is outstanding also.
I like most beers, but am partial to Fat Tire, Sierra Nevada, and Red Hook IPA.
I picked up some Sierra Nevada Pale Ale this weekend and loved it. Nice call Bro!
-
Stella Artois.
It has a nickname here - wife beater!
That's cos all the guys get tanked on it and beat their wives :/O
-
I prefer German pilsners (surprise!), like Wernesgrüner or Radeberger.
Ahh, the taste of my childhood... `Dr!n#
-
New Glarus(from Wisconsin)...Spotted Cow and Totally Naked beers rock!!!
But, my new beer of choice is an import from Belgium...Hoegaarden(Who-Gar-Den)... O0
-
Everyday brew? Ballantine Ale ("Flavor, Body, Purity"), but I'll admit it does not seem as flavorful as it did twenty years ago, but that might be me and not it.
Others? I'm not that adventurous (read: "not profligate with money on hyper-pricey boutique brews"), but find products from Saranac and Sam Adams quite OK--not every flavor, as some are ghastly fruit-infused ones, I being fairly much an IPA fan. We have a satisfactory local brewer called "Blue Point."
As to Yeungling, well, I recently tried their "Black and Tan" and found it thin and flavorless.
The widespread popularity of things like Budweiser and "light" incarnations of anything amazes me. There is something wrong with the taste buds of much of the country. What's that they call these "beers"... "wet air" isn't it?
-

Yeah, Sierra is a good brew.
-
I tried some Sam Adams Summer Ale over the weekend. Good Stuff.
-
Usually stick to the basics....bud light or coors light. Enjoy a good corona in the summer every now and then too.
Need to try others though. Always intend to when i'm at the store but I can never decide what to get.
-
Just finished mowing, push mow, the bride gets the rider, and this can of KEYSTONE LIGHT is darn good. Basics? How more basic can ya get?
-
any beer that gets me drunk, I will drink. so therefore, all of them.

I live here in Seattle in one of the best craft brewery sectors of the entire country. I just returned home from the Oregon Brew Fest in Portland, OR - one of the biggest and best craft brewery celebrations around.
The Yakima Valley/Cascade region provides 30% of the worlds hops (used all over the world - in breweries near and far!) So I couldn't taste fresher beer on a daily basis.
So I drink ONLY craft local microbrews - none of that B.S mass produced light beer stuff (ahh college) that are completely stripped of nutritional and all flavor qualities! (yes, nutritional)
Check out Oregon Brew Fest if you are ever in the area. Always the last weekend of JULY!
-
Very fussy about beers - nothing too hoppy (I don't like that bitter taste). My current faves are Wachusett blueberry (Wachusett a a local microbrewery out of Westminster, MA), and Sam Adams Summer Ale (which is a still a bit bitter but has a hint of lemon in it, so that's forgivable).
I don't do stouts (waaay too strong and heavy IMO).

I was at Brewfest, and I'd posted in the members section that I was hoping to catch up with other sly brethren while I was there. I was there Friday afternoon.
-
New Belgium Brewing company has a seasonal brew out called "Skinny Dip". It has a sligt bitter taste IMO but overall another good brew from those folks.
-
i liked the skinny dip! also had a new stout last week. YOUNG'S DOUBLE CHOCOLATE STOUT!!! good beer!
-

If you like Chocolate Stout.... try Dead Guy Chocolate Stout. An excellent brew with perhaps the coolest beer logo in the world.
-
I tried some Sam Adams Summer Ale over the weekend. Good Stuff.
I like most of Sam Adams' beer, seasonals included. Summer Ale? Not so much. :XX
-

I like just about all of Samuel Adams selections, especially the ale's. O0

Sounds good! I am drinking Elysian Brewery Men's Room Red -
Got to try it if your in the Seattle/Portland Area! It is great!
-
Shiner has put their latest seasonal brew. Oktoberfest is now in stores. I know what I'll be enjoying while cooking on the smoker this weekend.
-
For the UK guys - Somerfield and the Co-operative are doing 15 bottle box of Bud for £9 or 2 boxes for £15.
-
My absolute favorite commercial beer is Guinness Extra Stout. Anything from Anchor or Sierra Nevada is also good. I have a good friend who is a home brewer who has won competitions all over the country. He makes the best damn beer on the planet. It's a beautiful thing to be me and have a friend like John. O0

I love Belhaven but haven't had it in a few years.
Last night at my favorite Irish Pub they had a new local brew on tap..... Irish Pig Porter. OUTSTANDING!!!!
-

Bought some on your recommendation but haven't tried it just yet... I'd better like it. :x!

Well, how did you like it Stu? I enjoyed a few of them this weekend! I happened to see that St. Arnold's has their Oktoberfest brew out as well. That is next on my list.
-
Current favorites:
Terrapin Sunray Wheat
Rogue St. Rogue Dry Hopped Red
-
Shiner, in every flavor I've ever had I enjoyed. Good brew! Nothing from Spoetzel Brewery I won't drink. While visiting WI earlier this year, I was introduced to Spotted Cow, which Arnie mentioned, great stuff, and Leinenkugel Summer Shandy. Summer Shandy is great for a hot summer day. Spotted Cow I might have enjoyed a bit too much, I think the cow tipped me that night.
Local brews I enjoy would be just about anything from the Marble Brewing Company. Great bock and double bock, oatmeal stout, blonde, red ale and a good brown. They've always got something seasonal as well.
Another good local micro is Kelly's, only had the Scottish brown but it was very good stuff.
When I go ballooning, most guys won't touch my beer. They're all drinking light beer usually (read: water). Oh well, they don't know what they're missing.
-
They're all drinking light beer usually (read: water). Oh well, they don't know what they're missing.
I always tell everybody this about Coors light:
I know the secret recipe. Coors has a 10,000 gallon vat of water.... they tie a single hop to a rope and tie that rope around the waist of an employee.... the employee jumps in the vat of water and swims to the other side...... the employee crawls out of the vat.....Viola!!! Enough Coors light to keep a LOT of people who have never had real beer happy for a month.
-
Light beer is a joke.
-
Drink your water straight! And the joke, "lite" beer has just as much sodium as any dark beer--net result, water retention is the same after drinking either one!
-
Light beer is a joke.
I saw a guy at the store this weekend with a 18 pack of Miller Lite in his hands. I fought off the urge to ask him simply, why??
This raises another question: Do y'all prefer bottles, tap or cans? I prefer bottles myself.
-
Tap if available, just feel it's fresher beer. Favorite is going to the Abita connected restaurant/sandwich shop in Abita Springs and getting my growler filled to take home--really fresh, really good--usually w/ Turbo-Dog.
-
Nothing better than tap beer. :@`
-
Most pople don't like draught beer because they've never had REAL BEER on tap!
I prefer draught for good beers and will always go that way first....... but for American beers that are already piss poor I choose bottles.
Poor American beer from a tap is even worse.
Beer in cans should ONLY be used to cram into the cavity of a chicken for making beer can chicken.............. or other cooking chores.....
-
Bottles, just slap a nipple on it. :) Actually Bottle beer poured into a frosty mug.
Tap if i'm out and it is a really good bar with lots of European and Irish beers.
-
I was at BevMo and approached the register with two 750 ML bottles of Belgium beer. The guy behind me had an 18 pack of Bud Light. I told him, you should go exchange it for my beer, it will taste better, have less calories, and has more alcohol content for the same price!
-

Tyler, I believe he's looking for volume, not taste, lol. ;)

Belgium beer is among the best, I really love my Hoegaarden!

Jax, unbelieveably bad, but great award winning ads.
-
Tried Shiner Oktoberfest, St. Arnold Oktoberfest and Sam Adams Octoberfest over the past couple of few weeks. I enjoyed the Shiner version the most. The other two were quality brews but not as good IMO.
-
Ive been drinking adult beverages for close to two months now, tried just about every common kind of beer out there and havent found one I like, theyre bitter and the smell can be overwhelming to me. I like the idea of sitting down for a beer and all that but need to find a good one. I love the twisted teas and Mikes hard lemonade and all that. Is it true that I just need to down a beer or two before I learn to like it?

That Schaefer is some really nasty crap. That's what I drank the last time I was unemployed about 30 years ago. I think it was around $1.50 a six. Ranks right down there with Pearl. :P

It's possible that you're just not destined to be a beer guy. Like anything else, it's an acquired taste. If memory serves, you said you like wine, right? Try some of the infused Belgian beers, wheat beers, Heffeweissen, etc. Avoid the ales and stouts (my personal faves) for now, as those are very strong, hoppy, malty brews. There are also a lot of great pilsners out there, like St. Pauli Girl. Avoid Coors, Bud, Miller, etc.

Beer from the beautiful Isle of Arran :@`

Is it true that I just need to down a beer or two before I learn to like it?
You're young, and now that you can imbibe you'll learn--hopefully quickly--that sweet alcoholic drinks don't treat you very well. Your tastes will mature, but it takes time--not amounts consumed to educate your taste buds. If you do drink, drink a little of the best, not a lot of the worst, if any.
-
I will have to try that, I love wine so I'll have to try some of those. Ive had coors, miller, budwiser, kokanee, molson, mickelobe (sp?), and some others that are horible in my opinion.

you all may not like what i am about to say but some background first.
1. i used to work at a liquor store be that as it may.
2. i am a product if a non reformed drinker Sunday thru Sunday drinker. who never needed a reason to pop a top again.
now my statement
All beer and lagers heck all brewed stewed drinks are "your-in" water to me.

Perhaps you didn't read the title of the thread......it is for "Beer Lovers". This means it is for people who enjoy sipping on a cold beer whenever we want to. I do understand that some people are so miserable with there life situation they like to inject their negative attitude towards anything others might enjoy. Hang in there mage...it'll get better.

I understand some people tend to think that however i was simply making my statement in my own way that there are other alternatives out there that don't involve yeast. Have your drnk if you wish but all things in moderation.

all things in moderation.
Well that's one point of view, old Roman, but I'd at least go to Mark Twain's take on that, "All things in moderation, including moderation" or better yet, Mae West, "Too much of a good thing can be wonderful." I think there's a lot to be said for Mae West's attitude, but it's just my opinion. While you're up, get me an Abita Amber. ;) Maybe two.
-
I'll take 2 fingers of single malt, neat, as long as you are up and if you beer lovers don't mind.

I've got an idea for you....Go start a thread "Alternatives to Beer". Once again this thread is for "Beer Lovers" which you obviously are not one. I'm not understanding why you would post in a thread on a topic that you don't like. There are threads on this site that go into topics that I feel are wrong. However, I don't go in there and tell the folks communicating in there that that I feel differently than they do. Why...for what...it doesn't do any good but to adgitate. I have the feeling that you would only do this on a cpu screen and not in society. I think you need to moderate the amount of time you spend in your parents basement playing Dungeon's and Dragon's! While you're doing that I'll be sipping on an ice cold beer or 3, bbqing some ribs and watching the football game this Sunday afternoon!

Cheers! `Dr!n# Rülps!

Enjoying an Iron City beer (or 6,7,8...) as I type this!! O0 It's a must try...if you haven't already!!

Actually, you insulted many of us by coming onto a board that we were talking about something we enjoy and decided to try to bring a negative tone to our discussion. While you may not agree with our passion due to your history, it's best not to post in the topic when there is no harm being done.

Last night was the first night of Oktoberfest at Deutsches Haus, New Orleans. Great selection of German beers, bottle and draught, offered. My preference is for darker beers and in addition to the dunkels, last night they were offering two black beers, Kostrizer and Monchshof-schwarzbier. The black beers are slightly less alcoholic than the dunkels, 4.8% for the black to 5.5% for the dunkels. Great to try several different types. Pretty good prices, $6 for 12oz or $18 for a pitcher. Also came w/ good German food, all cooked on the premises by members of the Haus. If you're in New Orleans for the weekend in October it's worth the price of admission$8, they have continuous live German band music. There are also wines--dare I say that word :/O--schnapps, oh, oh, I'm going to get told off. Seriously, if you get here or are in the vicinity--it's a great time, and it's family friendly the way only New Orleans can be. And yes, there were a goodly number of fellow Sly's celebrating too. O0
-
Gotta love Oktoberfest..! I plan on being in Munich this time next year to soak in the atmosphere, along with a fair few pints i might add..
-
Drink your water straight! And the joke, "lite" beer has just as much sodium as any dark beer--net result, water retention is the same after drinking either one!
It's not the water retention that matters, it's the caloric value. I actually don't mind light beer. It definitely has its place. You can go out for an evening and drink quite a bit of it without feeling any ill effects the next morning. Just a concession that I don't mind making most of the time.
I'm not a beer connoisseur. Most of the time I'm happy with the mainstream American brands at which a lot of people turn up their noses. I like most of the English and Irish beers and ales; the German ones not so much (with all due respect to our German brothers. ;) )
-
I found another seasonal brew at my neighborhood grocery store over the weekend. Hoptober, from our beer loving friends at the New Belgium Brewing Company. Three of them things and I was able to move right on past the Texans getting smashed by the Cowboys! I was still up at 3:45 this morning with no ill effects.
-
To be honest I've never had beer before, I've had liquor and I had a drink of an alcoholic energy drink before (this was back in high school). I've never been a big fan of drinking, it just makes me tired. My favorite drink has to be skyy vodka and fruit punch gatorade, which was the first ever alcoholic drink I've ever had. Dry gin is nice two, but. With that I'm a "supper" lol. The energy drink think was gross, I've had tons of different nonalcoholic energy drinks and have never had a problem with the taste, but add alcohol and its terrible.
My dad is an alcoholic and he used to drink beer a lot, so thats probably why drinking has never been appealing to me... :-\
-
The seasonal beers continue to be released in my area. St. Arnold's Brewery put out there Christmas brew this month. I highly recommend trying it if you can find it.
BaldBradley- Alcohol and especially beer isn't for everybody. That ok though....we can still get along just fine.
-
My beer and I got a little too attached for a little too long. I LOVED my beer - especially Guiness, Harp, Heineken, Grolsch and a bunch of cheap domestics as well - Pap's Blue Ribbon, Lone Star, MGD. Sadly my drinking days are over. It was a good 15 year run, but now I haven't had a drink in over 3 months and am trying to keep it that way. Good things don't tend to happen to me or those around me when I've had a few.
-
BaldBradley- Alcohol and especially beer isn't for everybody. That ok though....we can still get along just fine.
You sure?
I would consider myself a mild social drinker, I only went to 5 parties through out my high school days (one was a 2 day party, that was pretty much nonstop) That party I realized that you shouldn't fall asleep first, I woke up with my face drawn on with permanent marker lol
I'm just not into the whole party scene, and I've never even stepped foot in a bar before. I would need to go with friends.
-
Good luck to you Jack with your battle. I myself use to get my drink on at a dangerous rate. It took me some work but I learned how to limit myself. Getting married and the added responsibilities that come along with that really helped me tone things down.
-
Thanks Ron. The longer I go the easier it seems to get.

mmm lots of good stuff here.
I'm personally longing for a Bell's two hearted ale right now. Nice, strong ipa, from one of the best breweries in the country. Can't find it in Mali, though. Looks like I'll have another castel instead ;)

What a coincidence...that is what I ordered when Todd was sipping his brew and about to show me the way...to Chimay...
-
yeah? Looks like I might have to have a chimay myself, as soon as I am back in the land of wide beer selection :)

So many choices, so little time.
Fat Tire, Mirror Pond, Sierra Nevada, and Anchor Steam (the only good thing to come out of San Francisco) top my list.
Stay thirsty my friends.

If any of you live in CO or AZ and want to send me some Left Hand Brewing Co Milk Stout, I'd be a happy man. They don't distribute it here in CA.

Real Ale's Fireman's 4 is quicly moving up my list!

Todd...you didn't teach me about the "bigger" bottles of Chimay!!! I got me the next to largest size($29.99) I saw to sip tonight to bring in the new year. I figure that way I can share...while still having my share. >:D

Healthy benefits of beer...

Not that I needed one, but that's a good reason to make a cooler run and reload.
-
budlight or weiser
-
Well, if you are going to drink beer, why not choose one that has a nice taste? Bud...whatever is cheap beer and probably only good for getting drunk. Not much taste. Not my idea of fun.
There are other brands out there with robust flavors ... they cost more, but they have nice taste to savor.
-
well. I actually like the taste of budlight, it's a aquired thing i guess. Although if I was going to drink for taste, no matter how girlie, mikes hard is where its at O0

Pretty close, they were like 9% and 10% alcohol stuff that comes in like a wine bottle with a cork. Now they are gone...

My brother introduced me to Kentucky Bourbon barrel Ale made by a company called Alltech after he toured the Kentucky bourbon trail. It's an ale aged in bourbon barrels and we think tastes pretty darn good! It's kind of expensive though. $15 for a 4 pack if I remember correctly.
-
I have many favourites!
Czech beers: Staropramen, Krusovice (hmmmm... the dark and the ligth versions are both fantastic!), Pilsener Urquell :@`
German beers: Dreher, Wernesgrüner, Gösser
Norwegian beers: Ringnes Platinum, Lysholmer Double Ice :@` ... but practically any beers sold in supermarkets taste fine and they are trustworthy, even the cheaper ones (like Dahls, Kompilz and Pokal) are not bad at all.
But I would like to warn all of you who are planning to visit Norway: you should be very-very careful with the beers sold in pubs and bars! I have no idea what they put into it, but it DID happen to me many times that I had a horrible hangover, even if I did not drink more than the healthy amount.) In addition, bars and pubs are damn expensive.
-
I'll never forget the fantastic beer I drank in Germany when I was there. It all was delicious!
-
I kinda skimmed the pages of this thread so I don't know if anyone covered this one. But if you have a taste for a decent tasting beer that won't break the bank try BOXER! I'm gonna make a disclaimer here and say that flavor-wise it just won't stack up against some of the really fine brews that have been reviewed here but at about $11.00 (US) for a case of 36 cans and at 5% alcohol by content it is a trip back in time to $1.00 premium gas in a Super Bee. This stuff will get you to the place you wanna be in a hurry and you can buy a bag of Doritos to go with it. It's made by the Huber Brewing Company so there is some knowledge of suds involved.
It is implied, by my post, that I may be less than discerning in my choice of beer. I can live with that.
-
Hummm...that could fit most any beer drinkers pocketbook...I'll keep an eye out for it.
-
I usually prefer microbreweries instaid of big name breweries. Up here we have "Alchimiste" and "Boréale" (not Bore ale...) What is amazing is that the Alchimiste brewery is as large as a bungalow and the price for a 12 pack is about 2$ more than regular beers. Cheers!
-
I drank some raspberry wheat the other day...Slynito, didn't like! :Xo!
-
This reminds me of some strange fruitbeers imported from Belgium. I tried the plum-flavoured one, also gave a try to the sour cherry and the pear taste, but somehow they tasted too synthetic for me.

The raspberry beer had a lot of carbonation, too. In Germany you can get a, "Weiser" (I think) it's beer mixed with a fruit syrup and it is sweet and refreshing. Ever had one?
-
No, never tried that. I am usually sceptic about sweet things, they can be more dangerous than they seem to be. (My experiences say that a sweety-tasted dark beer makes you drunk sooner than a bitter light one.)

Anyone tried this cider? Good old scrumpy jack. 6% dry cider,
-
My favorites:
Belhaven Ale
Newcastle Brown Ale
Corona
Chimay
Scrumpy Jack was kinda, well, gross in my opinion. I prefer Strongbow or Magners. If I remember correctly, though, Scrumpy Jack is considerably cheaper, which isn't bad on a budget.
-
Both strongbow and scrumpy are 4 for £4 at the shop.
-
Well, there's Spider Bite Pale Ale (http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/spider-bite-first-bite-pale-ale/158301/), but it's very local (Long Island, NY), and you have to buy a "growler" before you can get it filled to take away at those places that dispense it fresh. It's fine, but if you drink alone, you have a lot of ale to get through before it goes flat. Not a real problem...
-

Ah alright. Couldn't remember. Been a couple years since I was in England. They don't sell Scrumpy Jack that I have seen anywhere here, but I know where I can get my Magners and Strongbow. :)

I love them all,and i often use beer! (i only use water for my lawn but i suspect that our Croatian water is genetically modified ;why-because our garden moles are about a size of doberman now :-\ ) FDA has issued the warning here to avoid water at any cost because of they recent studies they show that fish have sex in the water (i would add frogs too ,it is just unfortunate :o )so bee aware!

Beer is nice, but only one -- to open the path for a Scotch on the rocks...

Everything but water will do,in fact I use to wash my hair with a beer (while drinking beer -that's our Croatian thing you wouldn't understand ;D )and then I had an ephifany I discovered snaps then wine then Votka THERE WAS NO LIMIT for me, there was a world of choices opened up just for me so i smartly decided to leave the law school (because too much work distracted me from drinking :*)))....

I am lucky to live in a place where craft brewing is very popular. I spend most of my booze cash on trying new micros.
As far as my palate has developed, I'm keen on IPAs. They're my favorite. The best IPA that I have tried is a double called Heady Topper. You can only find it in VT and a select few stores in surrounding states. Their brewery in Waterbury literally went under water so production has been delayed some. Anyway, it's a brew that I would highly recommend to anybody who's a fan of strong IPAs.
I also delight in drinking beer from Stone out in California, as well as offerings from Unibroue in Canada.
-
I don't care for IPAs but I love Stouts and GOOD Bocks. I'm a Guinness guy n general but I like Dead Guy Chocolate Stout every now and then. Just one or two of them. Thay have a GREAT logo.

Speaking of Yuengling, we don't get that in this part the midwest. I grew up on the east coast, so I remember it well. A coworker of mine found out about my trip to VA/NC next month, and asked me to get him a couple of cases. One heck of a beer run! :D

Abita Amber from New Orleans is quite good - very mellow and easy to enjoy far too many.

Aloha to all you beer drinkers,
Now living back in northern CA, I can enjoy Anchor Steam, brewed in San Francisco(especially good on tap), but got to liking Long Board lager while living on Maui for 3 years.
Also was in the pizza restaurant business both in CA and Oregon...opened one of my restaurants down the street from Deschutes Brewery in Bend, OR. I suggest you try some of their beers which you will find in major market chains. And last, out of Portland, OR, is the Widmer brews, I like the Hefevizen with a lemon wedge. As they say, most beers are good, some better than others, and like coffees, depends on your individual taste buds.

It is good, and all the Abita brews are good, Turbodog is outstanding. But, as much as I wish they were from New Orleans, like our old Dixie--before the "bad batch"--they're really located across Lake Pontchartrain in Abita Springs and they use the spring water for their brewing. We have another really New Orleans brew now, NOLA--and it's gaining a good audience for its great products too. We have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to great food and drink in South Louisiana.

GUINNESS. damn it's good. I'll let you into a little fact about a good pint of Guinness, you know it's good when you can draw a smiley face on the head, and the face is still there once the pint is finished. also if it takes you 6 sips, there should be 6 rings for each time you have had a sip.

Anybody try this new Guinness Black.?

the lager? I've not no, but I'm interested in trying it, though ive not seen it around in the supermarkets.

It will be a different experience if you try it like this. The problem in most places that serve Guinness (in the States) is that they do NOT know how to draw it from the draught properly. When Mark talked about that thick head on his beer..... I knew I should be sitting next to him enjoying one.

AND
the "perfect pint" of Draught Guinness is the product of a "double pour", which according to the company should take 119.53 seconds [per the brewer's website]

Crack me up. I've seen the old double pour many times whenever anybody orders a "pint of the black stuff".

So I must have tried at least 4 or 5 different pumpkin ales this season... Pum-king I liked the least. It seriously tastes like they are trying to fuse an entire pumpkin pie with beer. Couldn't get into it, but a lot of people love it. Different strokes...
I have to say Dogfishhead's (one of my favorite breweries) Punkin is my favorite. Tasted like a great beer with a light pumpkin pie seasoning to it. A close second for me is Big Boss Brewery's Harvest Time ale. Also delicious. Man, I wish I had saved that bottle. Love the label on that one. Sam Adam's Harvest Pumpkin is pretty good, as well. I did try a few other pumpkin ales, but they're not really worthy of mention.
Now I'm not-so-patiently waiting for Great Lakes Brewing to release Christmas Ale next month. That stuff is simply delicious. Flies off the shelves though, so you gotta grab it quick!

I'll stick with my West Coast beers (Sierra Nevada, Anchor Steam, Red Hook, Deschutes).
Does Anchor Steam still make it's Christmas Brew? I used to love that stuff.

I've never had it at room temperature.... I would say that I've had it around that 2 degree C mark. Most Americans have no clue about real beer and drink it damn near frozen. American Lagers (from the big boys) suck and are just "beer"...... they're not really "BEER"!!!
-
Screw that ill take a cold beer over a warm one any day, unless their aren't any cold ones left.

Does Anchor Steam still make it's Christmas Brew? I used to love that stuff.
Yes, but it's now called "Anchor Steam's Nonsecular Winter Solstice Celebratory Seasonal" Brew. Previously it was called "RamaHanuKwanzMas Ale", but someone, somewhere was offended.
-
American Lagers (from the big boys) suck and are just "beer"...... they're not really "BEER"!!!
My thought on these, Coors Light, for example--is that I'll take my water straight up, thank you very much. One problem that is hidden is the high salt content of the so called "light" brews. That will hold more fluid than the fuller flavored and less salt laden real brews. The regionals that have become so strong in the last 10 years or so are really returning taste to the marketplace. Now, temperature, I do think that we in the States overchill a lot of our beverages, not only beer. But, it's going to be a while until that changes except for specialty and "gourmet" outlets.
-
Has anyone talked about one of the most famous Guiness Stout Drinks? the "BLACK & TAN". This drink will, as some say, "Put lead in your pencil"!
The English like to blend their beers and this blend is my favorite of Guiness Stout & Bass Ale. The traditional way of blending to perfection; pour Bass Ale very slowly in a tipped 20 oz. glass to half way, place a tablespoon convex side up resting on the lip of glass with spoon over middle, slowly pour the Guiness Stout over the spoon, mixing with the Bass Ale but allowing it to float on top. NOW...sip slowly, savouring the flavour created when the Bass passes through the Guiness, on its way to your waiting taste buds!
Give it a try and report back your experience for us.
That's all for now from the Head BOLD Guy

LOL...I've heard of the Black and Tan but it's too much like work.
-
Next time I'm at the bar ill have to try that Black & Tan, but for now ill just have to stick with the Stella Artois.

Yeah, no kidding. Maybe I'll try it someday, if someone does it for me. ;D

I mentioned the Black & Tan on the last page, and provided a youtube link on how to make one. Looks pretty simple. I've only had it at a bar, though. Good stuff!

Any of our UK brothers or Continental brothers drink shandies or Berliner Weiße? I've had Berliner Weiße years ago when I was in Germany--before unification--and it was good, not something for everyday, but a nice cooler. Shandies are pretty good too on occasion, iMO.
-
Sorry Plano I just jumped right into this topic and didn't read all the post on the other pages.

The Black and Tan with Bass is an awesome "drink" and one of my favorite ways to enjoy a REAL beer. And the way Kahuna described the "pour" is EXACTLY correct.

I discovered shandies late this Summer. I nice change of pace and very refreshing. I wouldn't drink them all evening but one or two is nice.

No problem, brother! Just thought people may have missed the video portion of the "Black and Tan"

I stick to Heineken or Abita Amber or light. Some of the Sam Adams are good. Tried Guiness and didn;t care for it,. Maybe the person pouring wasnt certifed.
Dont like blue moon. Havent really tried any of the flavored beers. One day guess I will have to give it a try.
Shock Top seems to be poplar around here. Might give that a try.
-
Ah!! Nothing like a good cold beer on a warm day especially after mowing the grass or just on a hot day in the summer, or at any time for that matter.
-
Hot days and cold beer just seem to go together.

Shandies can be quite refreshing. A Golden (Bass/Stella) is also a nice change at times (though I find they creep up on you if you're not careful!).
-
Shandies are a good summertime refresher. As Mike said, I wouldn't be drinking them all evening.
...Speaking of refreshing beer, I've recently been introduced to Hefeweizen. Can't believe I haven't tried that style before. That stuff is delicious. Too easy to drink.

Shock Top is decent, definitely better than the domestics. For some reason though, all of their brews seem to be really light on flavor... Almost too light. Maybe that's just their style, or my taste buds.

Agree nothing like a cold beer on a hot day , but I prefer room temp. during the colder weather. Seems to go down smother. `Dr!n#

So, I was super early for a dinner date last night and as I was wondering the streets I stumbled across a Tradition Irish bar, with all the trimmings, including the old Irish guy sitting at the end of the bar having a few quiet ones, with his loaf of bread that he was probably supposed to have taken home hours ago... Anyways, I saddled up and asked for a pint of Guinness, Before last night I had regretfully never had a Guinness on tap before. They did the proper 2min pour and everything, it is really quite an amazing thing to watch for the first time!
I was really quite impressed with the whole adventure really, especially the part where before I had even finished my glass, the bartender asked me if I wanted another one. That's the kind of hospitality that I wouldn't expect from a pub right in the middle of a capital city! Definitely going to go back there again if I am ever in the area... just need to remember where it is :D

and wandering too...
-
Aye, a pint of the black stuff will hit the spot every time.

I remember having Berliner Weisse or 2 or 3...delicious. They had two kinds, a raspberry and another, right? Both sweet and refreshing on a warm day.

It definitely will.

Mark my Friend... as a man from across the pond... you know full well that Guinness must be pulled from the tap and served not cold, but cool, to REALLY be enjoyed.
It just isn't the same from the bottle.
On the cans of Guinness it says 'serve extra cold'.
-
if you really want a good pint of Guinness, and i mean the best you will ever taste, get yourself down to Dublin!
-
New belgium brews are my favorite. But since louisiana sucks and i can't get that here,
Paulie, they sell Chimay in the City, Martin's has it. As a guy I knew who was from France said, "After some Chimay, She may, but then she may not ;D"
Chimay a wonderful beer ... In the UK Harveys my local brewery or Munchner Weisse .

I wonder why.... I know the draught is never supposed to be served "extra cold".

You live in the UK with great local beers, ales & stouts, & you drink Coors, not only Coors, but Light? :/O I mean I believe in chacun à son goût as much as anyone, but that's really a surprise! :o

I have to agree with Saintc on this one!! American lagers are brutal for the most part.
-
LOL I like the taste and it was on offer!

LOL I like the taste and it was on offer!
You offer it and I will take it ;) :*)) can remember in High School had to skip school on Friday's so we could go across the Wyo. line and by 10 cases, and get ready for the dance at home and make a few bucks. Or good old Coor's Beer. Colo. would have been to far to drive. lol
-
I remember when you had to smuggle Coors east of the Mississippi.
-
I have to agree with Saintc on this one!! American lagers are complete garbage for the most part.
Fixed that one for ya. O0

About to crack open an extra cold can of Guinness. Yum

Cheers, Mark....I may just go and crack one open myself just for the hell of it....
-
I just drank a six pack of Pumpkin Ale. Very nice ....... Had some friends over to play cards and knocked 'em down.
-
Beer makes me happy. That first pint after work on a Friday is :@`
-
I recently started a job that is a Monday-Thursday. Ideal hours and now I have a three day weekend every week. I'm thinking I'll get more into my love of beers, maybe even start brewing my own.
-
Are they hiring Sean? I am unemployed and my beer money fund needs replenishment :P
-
I just looked at this site , http://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2013/06/the-worlds-top-10-beer-brands/11/ (http://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2013/06/the-worlds-top-10-beer-brands/11/)and I am surprised that "Bud" is a distant third. (but Bud and Bud Light total 77.1 m barrels)
-
In the last couple years I've started a liking of craft beers. Here in Kzoo we have several beer makers, a few of them nationally known. This is definitely a craft beer town. I tend to NOT like bitter or very hoppy beers. I like darker beers and those with more complex flavors. Love beers with a wheat profile with a bright finish...
That being said, I will drink Bud/Bud Light if its free LOL
-
Guess I was surprised that many of the most popular global beers were tied to China. They do have a lot of people there, thus a large potential customer base...
I like the Samuel Adams seasonal brews.
-
I like Ipswich Ale and Arrogant Bastard (although I am not one... I promise! ;D). Yuengling is good too, but they don't distribute it here.
I like Guinness on draught too. I can suck those down like a man stuck in the desert slurps down water. Mmmmmm... :)
For what it's worth, the *best* beer I've had is local bitters served from pubs in the UK. That was like water to drink and refreshing as anything. I had a hard time drinking US beer after a jaunt across the Pond.
-
Wow 10.5 %, i like duval begium beer thats 8 . But the thing with beer is there is always a effect on ones body so cut down my intake .the local brew is amazing tastesflowery Harveys of Lewes
-
Wasat a party at the weekend must admit have not had bud for years and that was all they had it went down a treat not like wife beater stella
-
Many of the seasonal brews are now available at my local grocer's. Time to pick some up! O0
-
Is Stella Artois any good or what.?
-
I don't like Stella.
I've been sampling some Pumpkin Ales recently I really like them. Not all the time but as a nice change.
-
Castle draught or Castle Lager. My beer of choice...
-
Becks
-
O0 Oh yeah! I love Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Arrogant Bastard, Guiness, and anything from Snowshoe Brewery. I especially like anything that I brew myself: heffe, pale ales, reds, browns, and stouts! >:D
