Title: The Custom Plus 3 Trick
Post by: Gambrinus on June 02, 2010, 10:21:12 AM
Ok I've been doing this for about a month and recently had a couple of people ask me about it.  I learned that you could scavenge cartridges off of a disposable razor from another member (step forward if it was you, I can't remember who)  But here goes.  I tried every cartridge you could think on the Headblade, but it was more like the Headblood.  I was wanting to try the Gillette Sensor 3 but I wasn't paying 20 bucks for an experiment.  So I found these beauties.
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv254%2FJeramyT%2FShave%2FComfortPlus001.jpg&hash=192b15b9a8aa99df4339d052565ac735bafe049a)

You get four disposables with handles
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv254%2FJeramyT%2FShave%2FComfortPlus002.jpg&hash=58f53d53c1dcbbfdf7a80def700e5563a480123b)
Push the cartridge to the side and tilt it up
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv254%2FJeramyT%2FShave%2FComfortPlus003.jpg&hash=31e12fde349985b1efb9ce44012bfd674e952745)
And you take the cartridge off Vuala there you have it!
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv254%2FJeramyT%2FShave%2FComfortPlus005.jpg&hash=ec813f5bcce086c5a7c7398eae2ef96ccb2a740d)
Put it on your Headblade (Upside down of course)
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv254%2FJeramyT%2FShave%2FComfortPlus006.jpg&hash=accefbfa1d8bb7ba9410f7b571df0abe8437efc3)
You even get a cool cover for it!  O0
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv254%2FJeramyT%2FShave%2FComfortPlus007.jpg&hash=1f055abb0e1d4e59f785ffaafb646fd2e330b9ec)

I have been using these for a month.  I don't know how they compare to the Sensor 3 cartridge, but I get about a weeks use out of them (approximately 5-6 shaves)  Definitely the bees knees of cartridges for the HB in my opinion.  Hope this helps   ;)

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the COST!  I gave around 5 bucks for 4 of these.  The Sensor cartridges are 8 for 20 bucks.  I'm not too good at math but if I'm not mistaken that is half the cost  >:D

Thanks for the pic tutorial!

Have you ever tried the knock-off Sensor carts from Dollar General or places like those? They're much cheaper than the actual brand...usually less than $2 a box of 5.  Personna's version usually runs about $4 for 10. I've never used either, but have tried both brands as Atra carts and think they work just as well as the name brand Gillette ones for much less money.

I haven't tried the Personnas and as for the DG brand I'm not too stoked by anything with their name.  My wife picked me up some DE blades from there and they were atrocious at best.  I felt like I got screwed and I only paid a dollar for ten.  The Personna ones might be worth a shot.  They don't carry them at my local Wally World though  :'(  The Sensor 3 cartridges are about as close to a Mach 3 for the HB as I have found.

I'm with you on that.  I don't buy much from "Dollar Stores".  If it's not even "good enough" for Wally's, I don't want it.
Thanks for the Custom Plus 3 tip!  I'll have to try it out! O0

The DG brand of carts is made by Personna (actually ASR) but they may have a cheaper or different coating than the ones labeled Personna. I really don't know.  I will say that I've had the DG DE blades too and feel the same way. Mine were made in Korea- so probably came from Dorco.

I was using the CVS ATRA Knockoffs, they worked well, and were about $8 for a package of 20, so around 40 cents apiece.  I'm down to my last ten of them, and would love to find a good inexpensive substitute.

Tried that this morning instead of my usual HB Triple or Personna Atra-like replacement.

It's FREAKIN' AWESOME!  That has got to be the best damn blade shave I've ever had!  Very close, and the blade didn't clog even once!!

So very happy!!!

Thanks for the tip!

I'll second that.  I picked up some of the Custom 3's on Friday and used them over the weekend.  The shave is closer than the HB triples in my opinion.  Great tip!!!

I am from Seattle, and have not been able to find them around at any of my local drug stores, (RiteAid, Walgreens, Fred Meyer) am I missing something?

Love to give them a try, I have heard of using the Atra blades in them, but seems like you are getting a much closer, smoother shave.

I NEED to try this, please help!

That's actually the regular Custom Plus.  What you want are the Custom Plus 3.  It's basically a Sensor3 cartridge.  I've been using them for 2 or 3 months.  I get mine at Walmart.

I said it before and I'll say it again.  I HATED the Headblade until I found these cartridges.  They are the most forgiving cartridge out there.  If you are thinking about throwing your HB in the trash, try these before you do.  If Headblade was smart, they would make a Sensor knock-off.  The blades have a leaf spring behind them and they pivot better than the Atra style cartridges.  If you have used the HB cartridge you have used an Atra style cartride.

I should have known the ones I found at Walmart were priced to good to be true, thanks for the correction. I wonder if the Custom Plus, which seems to be a 2 blade razor would fit in the HeadBlade like the Custom Plus 3. 10 for $6.97 sounds really good to me. :)

I couldn't find 'em at my local Wally. Walgreen's had them, though.....2 varieties; Sensitive and Soothing.
I bought 1 of each yesterday and tried the sensitive today. Really a nice shave.
I also bought the Custom Plus (twin) on Friday by mistake. The problem with them is that the mount is too wide to use on the Sensor adaptor. So the regular Custom Plus cannot be used on the HB at all.

Thanks for sharing that, I was tempted to buy the Custom Plus (twin) to see if they would work too. That would have been the best deal in town @ $6.97 for 10. I bought the Custom Plus 3 at Walmart in a 4 pack for $4.97 and could not be happier. I don't even see the need to try any other blade with my HeadBlade at that comfort and price.

I just tried them for the first time tonight and echo everyone else.  Very close shave.   Definitely felt more pull than HB triples - but no razor burn and the shave is the closest I've ever had without a single nick.   Great advice!  And cheaper too.    I typically get two weeks out of a HB triple - so will be curious to see how long these last.

FYI - I'm in Portland Oregon and I found mine at Walgreens.

Just a follow up.  I've been using the blades for a few days.  I'm not sure if its because they shave so close or what - but getting bumps and definitely not as comfortable of a shave as HB triples after the first shave.   I think I'm going to switch to something else.   Anyone have a tried a true alternative to HB triples?

Todd, try the Personna auto plus or twin plus. They work better than the triples. You can find them at Walmart. It's one of the best values for cartridges out there.

Craig make sure you have the right razor too.  It's easy to get the Custom Plus and the Custom Plus 3 mixed up.  They put them next to each other in the store, but they are a totally different razor.  I've only seen the 3's in a four pack.

While I could not locate my HeadBlade black adapter at the time I came across the reading of the "C+3" post, I really wanted to give these blades a try, so I bought and used the razors - as is, lathered up with a palmful of Schick Hydro Gel with a few drops of Shave Secret as an undercoat.

O0 Results were simply AMAZING!!!. I actually got a closer shave with the Custom 3 , as compared to the Headblade series. Check it out guys.. (Leaves scalp very well, moisturized with a fantastic non-greasy shine) I think you'll like it!!

Gotta love it!!  !B@
Tried a little experiment and I absolutely love the results!!!  :@`

While in the shower, I first throughly scrubbed my head with St Ives Apricot Scrub. Rinsed, then combined a few drops of Shave Secret Shaving Oil w/SCHICK Hydra Gel, and worked it into a rich, thick lather. First I shaved with the Custom+3 series razor, then I lathered up again and used my HeadBlade.

Awesome, Sleek, Super Smooth, Shiny (but non-greasy), Nick-Free, Kick Ass Results!!  b0x3r

Got an extremely close "Kojack" shave with the "Custom+3" and the HeadBlade sealed the deal and took the end result to the next level. The experiment left me virtually "shadow-free" - something I've been looking forward to for quite a long time. By the next morning, my head was still quite smooth, "shadow" only lightly visible!! (Usually, I have a dominate "shadow" by the next morning).

For those of you still thinking about whether or not you're going to try the "Custom 3", maybe my little experiment may help you in your determination.

The CP3 PRICE is RIGHT and the RESULTS are AWESOME!! Hard to beat that by any standard!!  O0

-Cap'n Noodles-

I love it!!

This is the real beauty of this site! We can all learn (and share w/one another) so much about products and the entire sly shaving experience from one another!! On my own, I probably would have not even thought about giving the "C+3" blades a try....Thanks guys!

How the hell do you get a Gillette Custom 3 Plus cartridge on a headblade?? I bought a 4 pack, there's no way.  I have both black and yellow adapters too.
The connector is not remotely close to either the black or yellow adapter.
The adapter "wings" are too far apart. (In fact, I don't see much difference between the black and yellow adapters)
Can someone take a close up photo of the cart actually going on to the HB?

Or maybe it only works on a HB sport?  (I have the traditional HB)

You may have gotten the wrong blades. There are 2 versions of the Gillette Custom Plus. The Gillette Custom Plus and the Gillette Custom 3 Plus are differrent. The Custom Plus version does not work in the Headblade but the Custom 3 Plus does.

Nope, this is definitely the Gillette Custom 3 Plus, even looks like the one in the first picture. I just don't get how that fits onto a HB adapter..   The 3 blade HB blades are no problem..  I use the yellow adapter with those, and for Atra types, the black adapter.  I wonder if they changed something..

Whoa!!!  It looks NOTHING like my adapter, except for the color!

Thanks Rob, I think that clears it up. Something weird about my head blade then.. maybe.
I did note that my black and yellow adapters (to me) looked identical, save color.
Do HB 2 blade cartridges (Atra type) and HB 3 blade cartridges use the same adapter?
Which one does a HB sport come with?  I might be stopping by my local Walgreens after work today.

The Sport comes with the yellow and the black.
However, the S4 Shadow comes with black adapters with the shape of the yellow ones, to match the color of the razor, I guess.
HB2 and HB3 packs I bought both had yellow adapters in it.

Aha!   So HB does make a yellow adapter that is really a black adapter... errrr.. or vice versa...     :P
The 4 pack of triple blade HB carts I bought had a yellow adapter, but it definitely doesn't work on the Gilette Custom Plus3..  and neither does the black adapter that came with my original HB, which actually looks exactly like my yellow adapter.. weird!!

I'm gettin' me a Sport today.   My HB is an original, and quite old at that.  I bought it like 3 years ago, (since I wanted to shave even back then) but it sat in my bureau drawer until just last month. I wonder if they changed anything in those years...?

No you're not, this illustrates the issue beautifully!  I have both the middle and righmost adapters. (Which as anyone can see -upon closer inspection-  are really the same adapter) I just assumed there was some subtle difference between them I didn't pick up on immediately when looking at mine.
I don't have the black one on the left, however, which is what I'd need.

Love this forum, we can learn something new almost everyday!  I know I do.

I picked up a Sport last night and got the "right" adapter, it works simply enough now, of course. Yay!

By the way, now that I have one, I'm not sure I like the Sport as much as the original HB;  it's bigger and has a longer "wheelbase", which means it doesn't follow the various contours, valleys, ridges, etc.. of my noggin quite as well as the original.  I really have quite the hilly landscape, apparently.
I wish HB made a shorter razor that flexed or was hinged in the center (with a bit of resistance), think "wasp" or "ant".. the way the thorax connects to the abdomen.. that would rock. It might demand a little more in the way of technique, but overall it'd be more forgiving of "interesting" terrain.
I'm going off topic though.. I'll post this bit elsewhere here, maybe I can get someone from HB interested.

I know I am a little late to the party on this one but I have to give my two cents on this "trick." I bought a pack of the Custom Plus 3 disposable razors to try this out. I am very impressed. It was a much closer shave than what I got with the Sensor Excel doubles I usually use. Also, and more importantly, I was surprised at how fewer times I had to go over spots that other razors typically missed. This means that I am getting less irritation because I am not having to go over spots as many times.

The best thing about this is that the cost per blade worked out to ~$1.50/ea.

All in all, this trick offers a great shave and saves money!

Thanks for posting it.

Doug your never too late! Glad you liked it. I have been using this method for about a year now. I've used the blue and the green ones. Don't know the difference but I like the blue ones the best. Probably because they are at Wal-mart and I don't have to make a special trip to Walgreen's. :-)

I've been using this trick since last summer too.   I'm also very happy with the results.  Lately I've been putting a few drop of alcohol on the blades to make them last 10+ days instead of only a week.  I think it helps, but it may just be my imagination.
I wish Gillette would sell the blades alone in bulk with out handles and packaging.  It seem like a waste to trash most of what you buy just to get the blades.  I did e-mail them from their website and ask.   Got a reply that looked like a general form reply.

Bought a packet of sensor 3 disposables today, [ could not find the custom 3 disposables in any local uk retailers] i am wondering if these are the same razors with a different name for the uk market. the blades snap on the black adapter just fine, will post results in the next week or so, BOOTS are selling the sensor 3 disposables at half price at the moment, so thats two packs for the prise of one  O0 O0 O0

Is anyone having troubles with "glide" when using the Custom Plus 3 Trick?
In the past I have always used the HeadBlade Triples. They have always glided very smooth over my noggin.
I recently started using the Custom Plus 3 Trick to save on cost, but I have noticed that the razor does not slide smoothly over the top of my head. It feels like a very jagged and bumpy ride.
I like the cost savings, but don't feel I am getting as smooth of a shave.
Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. I use HeadSlick and apply with a badger hair brush.

I add several drops of secret shave oil in with the headslick then apply that mixuture with a brush.....no real glide issues for me unless it is a couple days inbetween shaves...which is rare for me.

I used to do the same thing  with mixing the oil in but I found it works even betterif I rub a few drops of the shave oil direct on my noggin and then apply headslick after...

You can also use the CP3's on the Rayzor Blade. I prefer Sensor3 over CP3 but you can't beat the cost of CP3.

I'm about to get a Head Blade Sport to try  but was worried about costly replacement blades. If I can still find these blades for sale, I'll try em. I'd also like to try these with a Rayzor Blade and compare the two.

A Google search of the Gillette Custom Plus3, shows at least some walmarts and walmart online still carry them.

Wow.  I haven't been on here in ages.  I'm still using the CP3's I just don't use the headblade much. 8)

Got my HeadBlade tonight and a pack of CP3's. 5 bucks for 4 at Walmart - this was the last pack left. Apparently they are popular. The Headblade Sport I found at Walgreens for 12.99

I Loved it. It gave a very close shave. It seems as close as my Schick Hydro 5. I can see it being even better once I get used to the headblade. I haven't tried the headblade triple blade that came with the unit. After a lil more practice, I can really see how the headblade would cut lots of time off your head shaving.

I'm going to try this for sure! I've been going back and forth between my fusion proglide and my HB and have been finding negative points with both...proglide doesn't get the top of my head as smooth as the HB does, proglide provides more flexibility, etc but the HB + these blades may be the answer! Thanks!

Better than Atra Plus?

Update: I picked these up this morning after I found my black adapter and WOW! Closer then ever, nice smooth strokes and a lot faster! I think the black adapter (sensor) blades really have more flexibility and seem to move over the contours of my head. I've found my method. Thanks for sharing this one.

I agree on the black adapter part also. I feel any blade using the black adapter moves with the shape of the head better.

I found the same thing at a local pharmacy but instead of being called custom plus 3 they were called custom 3 - same concept but maybe the strip is different ? Anyway they fit fine and they are 100x better than the HB blades IMO.  I hope they never run out :-)

I might order 100 just in case

Better than Atra Plus?

I haven't tried the Atra or sensor blades. My thinking is that these Custom Plus 3's may not be superior to the Atra or sensor blades just because they are supposed to be higher quality. The thing for me was to find the best blades I can for the HB on my tight budget. If you can afford the Atra or Sensor and don't mind putting the money out on a regular basis, you might like those better.

Heck I have a Schick Hydro 5 which I love but the blades are 12 bucks a 4 pack. I cant justify using that on a daily basis.

Electric - if you like th Atra's try Wilkinson Sword's Atra equivelant. Walmart has them for about 3.50 for 10.
