Title: HeadSlick
Post by: BillOnBass on June 01, 2010, 09:51:38 AM
I ran out of Edge gel a few days ago, so yesterday I picked up some HeadSlick for the first time.  Like the name implies this stuff is pretty slick.

I'm just not used to the texture and non-creaming action of it.  It felt like I used a little too much for just one shave (head and face).  So do you guys add water to it (which I noticed resulted in suds) or just rub it on as is?

Pick up a shaving brush next time you're out - Wal Mart and all the drugstores sell them. You can put about a nickle sized worth of Headslick on the brush (slightly wet), start lathering on your head and face and still have enough left over for another pass. It does foam up when used this way and makes a much nicer shave.

You only need to use a dime size per application.  I apply it twice per shave, once for with the grain and once for against.

Thanks guys!

Haha, I knew I'd have to try the brush at some point omegapd.  I've read a little about people creating uberlathers with things like glycerin and soap and stuff.

What do you guys do to create the best lather?  Does it involve HeadSlick?

I use headslick for my face and head.  I don't lather mine up, I just apply as is.  If it gets dry a little water will do the trick.

Yep, like Tyler said, you only need a small amount. A dime or nickel size dollop will do it.
It's different from the gels in a can, you won't need as much.

I use Headslick as my primary shave cream for my head, but tend to use Edge for my face. Ironically, I ran out of Edge this morning...lol  I never actually tried Headslick for my face, but it worked great!  Just like everyone says, a nickel size amount will be enough.  Although, I am curious about that shave brush technique....I may just grab one today.

I've used a shaving brush some in the past, (P.S., Pre-Sly), with shaving soap and a mug.  I thought it was too much trouble for everyday vs. shaving cream.
Lately I've been using Headslick with a brush for head and face.   The Headslick lathers very well with a brush and you can reapply quickly to go over for a second pass on missed areas.  Slick plus a brush seems to be a good combination, and not any extra trouble.

I am a big fan of headslick for shaving the back of my head.  It offers extra protection against any cuts.

That would be great.  Since my trouble area seems to be the back with getting every spot without nicks.   I noticed though that it is "mentholated."  Anyone have any problem with sensitivity or irritation from the Head Slick?

If you want to take Head Slick to the next level of slick, use a bit of it, then go to your local Wal Mart and buy a couple of vials of Shave Secret (It's in their shaving section- but you have to look hard for it, because it comes in little vials!) shaving oil. Mix the Shave Secret into your Head Slick well, and enjoy! This has been my "go to" shaving formula for the past couple of years, and I doubt a fly could get traction on my head, with this slick duo applied!

Like Tyler, I use 2 applications per shave - one to shave with the grain, rinse, reapply and shave against the grain (and every other way!) to get that "ultra-smooth noggin."

By the way, I believe mixing these was originally suggested by Warhawk, but it's been awhile, and I've forgotten who suggested it.

There's definitely some personal preference here.  I'd say try it both with a brush, and without, and see what you like best.  Adding the brush adds a foaming aspect that some guys enjoy.  I prefer to use a small amount, and create that thin 'slick' layer that feels so much different than your average foam or gel.

A little bit of HeadSlick on a brush goes a long way. Only add a few drops of water if it begins to dry out. That will bring it back to life.

I'll have to try this trick. I lather up my head and shave it then reach for the brush again and apply whats left to my face. There just never seems to be enough left. Perhaps adding a little bit of water will fix that issue.

Have to agree......Headslick with the brush works best for me.....plus more bang for the buck!   Still need to grab some of that secret shave oil to add to the mix.

And the brush feels great too.  I mix about 1 teaspoon of HS w/ some glycerine on the brush after it's been run under some really hot water & the excess shaken out, seems to add to the foam and cuts back on any tendency to dry out.

I don't know about the use of a brush. I had one years ago and it was ok ,but I find just using Head Slick straight out of the jar with water plenty good enough. If it starts to dry add a little water with your hand it's as slippery as any oil . Just take the time to rub it in good by hand.

I prefer a brush too, you get a real nice lather out of it.  Also, like others said, if it starts to dry out for a 2nd application, just add a little water, that's what it needs to lather.
I bought the Secret shave oil, haven't tried it out yet though.

Not a brush person myself. I just feel it's another piece of equipment and step that I don't need.

Phigg, try the Shave Secret, it's great. You get a very smooth shave, and you're head feels almost suede-like afterward. Good stuff!   O0

Thanks to all for their input. I'm new to this. I'll give both the straight from the bottle and brush methods a try when my HB shipment arrives. (Hopefully soon)
