Title: Hipsters sporting the MPB look
Post by: CarlCarl on May 24, 2010, 02:51:18 AM
I've noticed several celebrities that have some "hipster" or "indie" credibility are rocking the MPB look instead of shaving.  I haven't seen anything too bad like a combover or a skullet, but they seem to be comfortable growing their hair out.  And they always have a beard with the look

Most of these guys have pale complexions, so maybe its a little harder for them to pull off the sly look anyways.  Or maybe a shaved head would just gives the impression that they care too much or are giving into main stream pressures, both of which a hipster wouldn't want to be accused of.  But ultimately I'm not sure why they do what they do

Will Oldham -Folk Guitarist

So what do you think?

Can anyone think of other examples of this?

If they don't want to look cool and SLY then that's up to them, but it wouldn't change the way i want to look.  I chose SLY coz I love the slick dome.   I can't understand why they want to have a toilet seat look when you can be SLY?? :/O

I think that none of those guys look like anything even remotely approaching "hip".

No it definitely looks bad

But hipsters these days are purposely embracing things that used to be considered "trashy" or low class.  It's because they are trying really hard to look ironic. Huge prescription glasses, handlebar mustaches, christmas sweaters and drinking Pabst are all hipster stereotypes.  I was just surprised to see MPB on that list

But of course if your just rocking the MPB without a hipster wardrobe, girlfriend, and lifestyle to match, its just 100% bad.

BTW, I'm NOT a hipster so I'm not considering this.  But just like Vash was mentioning in another thread, I see a lot of hipsters around my area and find them somewhat interesting

Amen

They ain't hip IMO, even though Posehn is a fellow metal-head, I don't find him at all funny.

Frankly, I find the look to look messy and dirty.  I guess I'm vain,  but cleanliness is a must!  This look doesn't project that at all.  Uck!!

I think when people grow out there hair when there bald on top it makes me think that they haven't accepted being bald and are trying to hold on to some former youth.

Keep in mind that "hipster" does not equal "hip".

Hipsters are a subculture like bikers, hippies, goths and punks.  So the only people that would really think this is cool are other hipsters.  I think they see it as these guys accepting themselves and/or making a joke of their baldness.

I could never grow my hair out like these guys because I hate how it looks and I take myself a little more seriously.  Like Papa Don said it looks messy and dirty.  But I still respect the way these guys deal with it.

Different strokes for different folks

I actually think this is true most of the time.  But for some reason it seem different with these guys

I personally prefer the sly look.  But I do think it is healthy that they are not doing, rugs, drugs and plugs.  However, it would look better to have the hair trimmed down and not sly rather than long, sloppy while having MPB.

I am wondering, is Portland, Oregon a center of the hipster universe?  I am currently here and have seen quite a few hipsters.  I think more per capita than Seattle!

Well said, they remind of the 90's Seattle grunge/ heroin shootin' dirtbag look.

The Dan Deacon photo is atrocious, yeah, but if you look at any other photos of Deacon, you'll realize that looking ridiculous is kind of part of his schtick. His outfits, his taped up glasses... it's all kind of a never-ending act.

The last one is so, well, dirty looking. His few strands look like dyed cotton candy, and cheap cotton candy at that. With the glasses and the blubber he would profit from the Sly look. He couldn't look worse than he does now......

Honestly, I'm surprised at how negative this thread is. I agree, the look doesn't look good, but to each his own. I was glad that marshd brought up the fact that at least they weren't trying to "treat" their hair loss. However stupid the look is, these guys are in some way cultural icons, and the more people comfortable with MPB, especially people who hold influence, the better.
