I've bought a new computer, got the advice and leadership of the Company IT guys, but like shaving I didn't tell the wife. My hope is to be able to intercept the UPS delivery, and get the boxes into my library before I tell her that I also am switching from dial up and get that work done too, kids gone, their telephone line is toasted--[yes there are some of us out there] to DSL. That is going to be another hurdle. If I can still operate a keyboard after the fact when she finds out that I went directly against her ideas on this--leaning on my sly experience--how TF do I transfer all the old Sh_t from the current Dell, circa 2000, to the new machine, a HP P6277c? Instructions in baby steps please, I might be seriously physically impaired after "She Who Must Be Obeyed" finds out. I've been told to use "OpenWord" or "OpenOffice", but I want to be able to work seamless from my work 2007 Office enviornment. Oh, and anyone have any ideas on transfering my WordPerfect8 address book--I really like WP8, but, I realize it's a Bill Gates world and I don't want to reenter more than 300 addresses--I still have one daughter to marry off--and unless she accepts a white ladder to elope with a big bribe, I have another wedding to do.
I'm in deep sh*t, I thought I could get her a little more "receptive" at the Derby party, but she decides, she's going to be careful w/ the Jullipes this year, why this year Lord, why this year?????
-
I had the shop where I bought my PC copy my old hard drive over to the new one so I can't help you there.
Isn't DSL more or less obsolete now? A cable modem will be faster.
-
I just upgraded from DSL (1.1Mbps) to Uverse (6.0Mbps) for $5.00 more a month! :@` If it's available it's pretty darn nice. A friend just got Cable and he's running 7Mbps.
DSL is going the way of dial up! ;)
So... what's the PC you're getting? Can I have it if the wife kills you? :*))
-
Well, in New Orleans we have Cox Cable--lousy company. After Katrina, we get back electricity at the house, cable running--everything is okay.
Two days later they disconnect everyone--system needs "repair". Well more than three months later they finally are back up. They're undependable, over priced and under serviced. We've got DishTV now. I will never put my fate in the hands of Cox again. So it's DSL or the satillite. That's why I chose it.
-
Dude!!! Be a Man dammit!!!! Tell her it is what it is and if she doesn't like it, tough sh*t.............
...and then beg for forgiveness.................

Not to rub salt in the wound, but my cable modem is rated at 20 Mbps and clocks at 19.2 Mbps :@` :@`

Yeah, I think that's how it's going to have to be. Then, once I can move my arms again, I worry about how to hook it up. I wonder what hospital I'll be in next week? :/O

Yikes--I hope it deosn't go too badly for you!
What Operating system is the new system? If it is windows 7 64 bit a lot of the old software will not run on it...(Just got a new PC myself and made the leep from XP to Windos 7)...
AS far as transfering stuff I am assuming yuou do not have any external hardrive? If not that you can either put the data on a dc, dvd ofr flash drive to move it over, or upload it to some virtual storage space....

Oh, most of my software is so old anyway 2000. I knew that would be Kaput--I would love to see if it will operate my WordPerfect8--it's so easy to use. Word, especially 2007 is an exercise in torture, as is Excell 2007. It is Windows 7 64 bit--whatever bits are????
I was sort of hoping I could connect the old computer and access the stuff as an external drive--is that real or am I totally in space? i guess I could go get a flash drive--a biggiy and move stuff--what a pain.
Getting DSL & changing the phone lines took forever--no wonder ATT is flatfooted whoever organized the sales force really blew it, no one call number at all. But, it's that or Cox Cable & I am never going to be at that bunch of morons' mercy ever again.

If the new computer has an IDE controller (big white plugs for the harddrives) in stead of SATA (small black plugs)... pull the harddrive out, switch the dipswitches to "autoselect," plug it into the secondary cable and the HDD should mount. Then you could either keep it on there as another hardrive to store stuff in, or drag whatever you want onto the new computer.
OR... get one of those IDE to USB converters. I have a couple of these at work and they work great.

Do they sell those at Office Depot, etc. or is that a special order business?

You can get one at Radio Shack or Best Buy. Rocketfish makes the one that I use - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Rocketfish%26%23153%3B+-+Hard+Drive+Enclosure+Kit+for+3.5%22+SATA+Hard+Drives/8800639.p?id=1206141490782&skuId=8800639&st=enclosure&cp=1&lp=15
-
Saintc,
You can get the enclosures, like Tyler suggested or get the adapter only. Just go to Bestbuy, Fryes, Radioshack or whatever and tell them, "I need an IDE to USB adapter."
Easy to use, it will mount just like a USB memory stick.
-
I am guessing since it's a computer made in 2000, it will not be SATA, it will be IDE. To be sure, bring the hard drive with you and tell them you what to "connect this harddrive to your usb port on your new computer." Any half competent sales guy will know what you need.
-
I am not sure if they sell them at office depot. I would venture to say they do, but I have never looked for one there.
-

Okay thanks, that sounds like a plan, I'll probably drag the whole thing, but "competent sales guy" that's going to be a little trickier here in New Orleans, where they can probably do a Hard Drive Sauce Picante, or Hard Drive Soufflee, even flambee, but----we'll see ;D ;D ;D
First I have to survive the wife, and the schedule, at least, says it's going to be delivered Wednesday, so maybe the housekeeper will put it aside and she won't notice it.
-
Saintc,
Been there...Done that...
Hated Cox BOTH before and ESPECIALLY after Katrina (referring to cable tv service)....
Dropped Cox...
Got DTV...
Love it....
Got a new Mac (laptop)...
Wireless network with (ugh) Cox again...(best priced wireless network I could find@ the time)...
Never had any experience with DSL, but ANYTHING.. and I mean ANYTHING has to be better than dial-up.....
As far as breaking the news of the new computer to the wife, there is an old suit of armor I saw for sale at one of the antique shops in the French Quarter the other day (LOL)...... :*))
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi121.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo209%2Fryanbowen479%2FLondon%2520Pictures%2FHoneymoonPictures103.jpg&hash=b7251b015de69eb7965d855048c05ae42dfe9ba2)
... Come to think of it, I could have used the same suit a few times myself in the last few months...
-Cap'n Noodles-
By the way, usually the store where you are purchasing your new computer can either instruct you (in simple terms) how to transfer files from your old computer to the new one, or guide you to someone who can do it for you...
If your wife surfs the web too, she may squawk at first, but she'll appreciate the upgrade once she experiences the comfort of all that speed....
Good luck with BOTH adventures...
-
Thanks Noodles--that suit of armor may be just the ticket--Jos. Banks?
Cox, I just wasn't going to have them anywhere near my house again, ever. The cable TV is so bad, I don't think I know anyone around my house that doesn't have a dish, Direct or Dish. Well, after today, maybe Nagin can go back. >:D
I bought the machine through TigerDirect.com at the rec of our IT guys. I had hoped I could just USB the suckers together and suck the good stuff out--but doesn't sound like that works. I'll probably have to engage them to help--but now w/ the oil spill I can't bribe them w/ a shrimp boil when they come to town :Xo!
You're right, she'll come to like it once she's used it--she's got some pretty good equipment at work, Tulane, she administers the Classics department--what else can you do w/ a Latin major :D Except she's slow to accept change--now that's unusual in New Orleans, isn't it/ :D

Tiger Direct is a good choice - a computer tech friend of mine goes through them all the time for anything he's needed.
*never* buy computer equipment from Circuit City, Best Buy, or anywhere else of that ilk, unless you already know what you want and don't have any questions to ask of people there. Very few things are as frustrating as having to instruct salespeople on what it is that they're already supposed to know. Call me old-fashioned, but I think if you're selling something, you had damn well better know at least a little something about what it is that you're selling...
-

And the weird thing, it's apparent even to a relative techno-idiot that they don't know anything except what models their pushing. I went to BestBuy, I told the salesguy that I wanted a PC, and he blew me off, immediately trying to sell me an Apple. Apple is a fine product, but it isn't the product I want bc of doing work at home, I don't want to have to resolve any potential conflicts between the office system and the home system. I told this guy at least three times I wasn't interested in Apple & why--it wouldn't or he didn't want to listen. Then he couldn't answer one of my main questions, but then I haven't found the answer yet, how to transfer my Address Book for WordPerfect8 to Word bc I don't think the new 64 bit system will work my WP8 program.
Well, the equipment arrives tomorrow and after protracted discussions w/ ATT, they will be at the house Thursday morning to change out the hardwire for the library from the now to be dropped childrens' phone [there is an idea whose time is long gone] to the main house line. I got so mad at that run around, I would have signed up for any alternative phone system available--but I don't know of any.
Damn, I hate changing computers--worse than a new wallet. >:(

I've been told to use "OpenWord" or "OpenOffice", but I want to be able to work seamless from my work 2007 Office enviornment.
Here's my 2 cents on this - I use Linux Mint as my OS on my desktop (the one I'm typing on now,) which uses Open Office as it's word processing/spreadsheet/database, etc. program. I couldn't load MS Word or Office on this computer, even if I wanted to. I was able to copy over all my old Word (.doc) files from the removable hard drive where I had them all stored, and copy them into my documents folder, no problem. Most everything came through just fine, but my resume, with its varied spacing, bullets, and so on - looks funky in Open Office. Not unreadable, but I certainly wouldn't hand it to a perspective employer.
That being said, I think Open Office is a perfectly viable (and free!) alternative to paying the big bucks that MS Office is going for these days, for all but the most demanding user. Just be aware that your documents will launch with the .doc extension that Windows assigned them with no problem, but if you make any changes and save your work, Open Office will want to assign it's own extension (.odt, in the case of documents) instead. Nothing to freak out over - I've done it and they still work just fine.
-

So they can then be opened in Word200 without a hassle? Sometimes, not very often, I'll work from home then e-mail all the stuff to the office where I've left my laptop computer and then enter that work. I need to be able to keep that alternative.

Sorry bud... I'm not sure of the answer to that. I've never tried to go back and forth between the 2 programs. Maybe FR8TRAIN can chime in on this - he's a fellow Linux user, who (I think!) still has a computer somewhere loaded with Windows.

At least most of you can *get* high speed internet. In rural Oregon I get the local high speed company which slaps a radio antenna on my house aimed at a series of other antennas that eventually connects to an OC3 or some such thing out at the airport. I am lucky to get 750k most days. We'll never get dsl cause there are only 200 people in our town. The cable company pulled out about two years ago. So qwitcherbitchin!

Wow, Dude, that completely sux!
-
OMG...that's terrible.
-
I'm on DSL and it's fine with me! Better than the aircard we were using.
A cable modem from Comcast, our local provider was nearly $80 a month since we didn't have tv with them. I'm not giving up my DirecTV, sorry.

Well, it's all going down today. UPS had a delay, I'm assuming the rain & flooding in Tennessee bc the shipping point was Illinois--and Tennessee is between Louisiana and Illinois. Anyway, I'm hoping my wife will leave for work before anyone shows up >:D. And, since I'm going to dinner w/ the guys tonight straight after work, if she doesn't go into the library she won't know the difference. I feel like I did when I was little trying to slip something by my parents--it's sort of a satisfying experience ;D. ATT shows up to do the rewire for the hardline to the library between 8-12 so it's more likely than not that I may do this.
If I don't, I guess it's like they say the gladiators said on entering the arena, "We who are about to die, salute you!"
Update: ATT guy called, so he's not coming until after 9:30a---wifey will be out of here. Now if I can just get lucky w/ the UPS dude--I may buy a lottery ticket.
-
So how'd it go??

:px :px :px :px :px :px :px :px
Thanks to the dumbest people I've ever had to deal with at the local UPS--computer was not delivered! Three days, and they couldn't do it--the biggest cluster F I've ever witnessed, and remember that's comparing it to my government work.
In the first part of the week I was told I'm being assigned to work in NY state for the March flood recovery. So, it looks like this is probably not going to work, the equipment will be returned and I'll start from the beginning once I've finished up in NY. Although I get to rotate back to NO twice a month, it's weekends, and UPS doesn't work weekends.
Oh well, it wasn't meant to be. Next time I'll bite the bullet, go to Best Buy, and pay the premium just to avoid the trolls at UPS.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out. Instead of going to Best Buy, though, I'd try to find a local shop that does repairs. That's where I got my latest PC; they copied the old hard drive contents onto the new one for me and were able to answer all of my questions and give me support if anything went wrong.

I think Dell sells the software and cable to transfer your old hard-drive.
-
Saint, can I hijack ur thread for a minute. My wife has a processor with boo-coup files in there that crashed and I was wondering how do I transfer the info from the old to the new. Thanks Saint.
-
I think Dell sells the software and cable to transfer your old hard-drive.
Mighty big of them (and Best Buy as well) to sell a cable that likely going to be used only one time in most cases...
-
If I were you I'd take my old machine down to the nearest Apple Store and buy a Mac. They will transfer all your files and for $99 dollars more they will give you a year of great lessons so you can master all the great programs that come with a Mac.
It took me only a few weeks to get familiar with the bugger and now 4 years later I am happy as a clam. No viruses, better software and it's Office Documents are compatible with MS ones.
-
Saintc,
Last I read, i think you said you ditched the idea of a new computer because of a transfer and work assignment in NYC (if i remember reading correctly), but i saw an ad recently in NOLA's own "Gambit" from a company called "UPTOWN COMPUTERS." They claim to specialize in being able to transfer data and files from any old computer system to a new one. Might be worth looking into if you still looking to get a new system and haven't found someone (or some method) to get the files transferred you wanted to save from your old system.
