Title: I hate shopping for clothes give this Fashion challenged Sly guy advice
Post by: baldtribesman on April 25, 2010, 06:47:04 PM
Fellow Sly guys, where do you buy your clothes name the exact place or if its a department store name which one and the brands you buy.  I am particularly interested in where to buy good pairs of jeans and cargo pants.  If your significant other does the shopping for you where does she buy your clothes.  Thanks I will use your responses to find places and can go and I will post my fashion makeover, g-d knows I badly need one.

I've been pretty lucky in the fact that most of my life I've worn a uniform...from kindergarten to senior year of high school. I then had 3 years of college and chose a profession where I was able to wear a uniform again.  :popo

Needless to say, you don't want any fashion advice from me.  ;D My days off are spent in Wal Mart clothes. I do tend to favor Lee or Wrangler in jeans, but the rest of the stuff doesn't matter much to me.

Wait a minute ... You were actually wearing a kindergarten uniform?

We didn't even had such a thing in the GDR!

Think this out--casual, dressy casual & business.  So, jeans--I still like my Levi 501's, standard blue, prewashed, black & white.  Some nice golf pull overs--avoid the really pastel ones--IMO.  Dressy casual--chino slacks, button down shirts, colored, stripes or patterns, my personal preference is no short sleeves, but they may work for you.  Business--standard suits, not continental, white, blue or yellow button down shirts k[cannot tolerate collar stays bc I lose them]--coordinated ties, white handkerchief in the pocket.  Whether you do summer suits in NY, I don't know,  but seersucker, poplin, and cord suits are very popular in our heat and humidity.
My wife only buys my ties--she's not as good as my Mother-in-Law was, but still pretty good.  I also pick some up when they're on sale--but buying neck nooses, it's depressing.
Totally casual, cargo shorts, festival t-shirts, w/ sneakers (socks) or deck shoes (no socks)--the socks thing may be a local absurd idea so follow what you see up there.    I have a ton of festival t-shirts, and wear them all the time at home and on weekends running around town on errands.

For good jeans, go with what fits you best and are comfortable.  I buy most of my jeans from Nordstrom Rack.  For good cargo pants, I prefer Dickies or Carhart.  They last a long time.

I have kids, so I don't shop for jeans outside Wal-Mart anymore.  But back when I didn't have to be frugal,  I liked Lucky Brand Jeans.  They seamed to last forever.  But it has been 8 years since I bought a pair.  So in short, I am not the person to talk to about fasion! :*))

Levi Jeans are still the best in my opinion: 501's or 511's. 8)

Not much use giving other clothing shops, because they are probably different in US.  I shop in British Home Stores, H&M and (for cheapness) Primark! 8)

I actually don't spend that much on clothes, but you can still look okay and not spend a fortune. 8) 8)

Personally, I haven't dressed for fashion in quite a long time. I dress for comfort. If I dress comfortably it is one less thing to concern myself with. If I dress for fashion and am not comfortable my discomfort will show. For example, if I wear shoes that are stylish but uncomfortable my walk will betray my discomfort. Same with pants, shirts, etc. At that point it becomes clear that I am a poser.
I am most comfortable in jeans and t-shirts. I don't care what the guy next to me is wearing.

Fred that's one reason I got married... otherwise I'd have never wear anything but blue jeans and tee shirts!  :*))

I go to the mall with one of my girls(not talking about mom and grandma) and I bounce outfit ideas around with them.

I'm a fan of Ross only because you can usually find great clothes for about 1/3 of what they were in the other retail stores.  I'll buy slacks that were $100 at Macy's for $18 at Ross.   Their inventory changes constantly and it is a hunting expedition.

I'm a Lee jeans and  Merino wool sweater fan.  The sweaters look like a polo shirt but are dressier.   They go great with slacks or with jeans.  I also tend towards black as its the universal color that goes with anything.

Since going sly I find myself wanting to dress a notch or two above what I was wearing before. And as a software developer (where the only rules on attire are usually "wear some") that puts me way above my colleagues.

During what passes for winter in Texas, I'll wear everything from jeans to dress pants (usually depending upon whether I'm on the motorcycle or not) and a button-front short. I like color and I like patterns.

In the warmer weather (again depending upon bike or not), it could be jeans, dress pants, cargo pants, or shorts. I'm also fond of tropical print shirts in the warmer months. I will wear T-shirts when out and about or at home, but will not wear one to work. Just a little principle of mine.

It's a myth that looking good and being comfortable are mutually exclusive. Good quality clothing and proper fit are just as comfortable as anything else.

And like Todd, I shop for the bargains.

When I was in my nice clothes phase, Bachrach was my go-to store. (Two out of my three local ones have closed recently, due to the economy.) Some of their stuff was a bit too too for me, but other stuff really worked well. The staff was really good at putting together outfits. Apparently I look best in "jewel tones."

I don't shop there much any more because I don't want to have to think about how to get toddler vomit or boogs out of a fine silk shirt.

Among department store brands I really like Perry Ellis. It's more of a "after work I'm going to a club" look. I prefer that to the "I'm a sailor on a yacht," "I play golf!!!" or "I'm a street thug" looks that seem to fill the men's departments these days. But again, these days for me it's more chinos and polos (summer) or merino sweaters (winter, see other recommendation upthread).

Jeans I just order from Lands' End. They're OK. Nothing great. I don't have the mental energy to find anything else.

I can't seem to wear cargo anything. The pockets seem to get caught on everything. Seriously, if I'm wearing cargo shorts and walk by a knob or handle, they're going to get caught on each other.
