Hi guys, I need advice for my 16 year old son who is losing his hair. How do I guide him emotionally to a place where he can come to terms with his hair loss and in accepting it, then buzz it or shave it. Also, for his self confidence I would like to find a good style of dress. He is a tall good looking guy. He has recently had his nose pierced which I think looks OK. Thanks for the advice
-
Easy enough answer for that one....Have him come in here and talk to fellow people were loosing their hair or BBC....i am sure he will get losts of support here...these guys are great

Welcome Browny!
I think he would find great advice here, but if he's reluctant to join or you'd like to do it offline, then here are some suggestions.
Be honest If he thinks your trying to jerk him around, he may get pissed off and do the opposite of what you think is right just to rebel.
If he has a sister around his age, try to get her to encourage him to shave his head and let him know you support the idea. She can use the "chicks will think it's hot" line, which is not a lie.
Try not to make the talk about shaving his head a big deal.
And the best advice I have: Have you and him participate in a St. Baldricks or WigsForKids event where you shave your head for money. Then, you can use that as a reason to shave his head and he can decide on his own if he should keep it going forward. You may even find that you like having a shaved head as well...if you don't already.

Thanks for answering guys. I should have explained I am the mum. We live in a small town in Australia and I thank you so much. I will let my son know he can log on when he feels like it to talk.

Welcome browny. This is definitely the site to be for support of the bald lifestyle There is also a site I found while searching for information on shaving my head. It seems to be based in Australia and was aimed more at young guys. It's think it was called Bald and Baldering in Oz or something like that. They seem to glorify the bald look for younger guys. But for a look at confident guys who live the style and will provide support, this is THE place. Hope that helps.

welcome browny. As the others have said you have definitely come to the right place. There are a lot of great people here who can give good advice. The way I feel about me finally shaving my head is that I just wished I would have done it sooner. It does give you confidence you didn't have before especially if you are loosing your hair or thinning.
Tyler gave a lot of great ideas. You want to try to encourge your son without seeming like you are harping on the situation. Does that make sense? But definitely get him to log into this forum. He will find a lot of encourgement here. Good luck. O0

Welcome to the group, Browny! And hopefully here in a bit, browny Jr. ;) Just like every one else already said just be up front, honest, and considerate. Suggest the ideas of shaving it to him, and then remind him, hair does grow back.
-
First thing I would say is do not make an issue of it. When i was losing my hair my mother would always suggest getting Regain or such formulas, it only made me more self conscious.
Talk to him and ask him if it bothers him or not. Help him find out what his options are if he wants to but let him decide. Support him rather than lead him, if that makes sense.
And yeah, tell him to come online here and check out the cool baldies on SBG.
-
Whatever the outcome he has to make the final decision because it's his hair. Also get rid of the nose piercing as it definitely mars a person's looks. And he will not be taken seriously in the business world when he goes to apply for a job.

Best advice that I can give you is this:
1) just be easy with it. I say, take him to a few sports events... A lot of extreme athletes are sporting the Bald Look now, and that is as good of motivation as any.
2) Dress wise, I am a taller fellow as well. I find that Polos are not as flattering as Button Downs, and I wear long sleeves roled up to or a little past the elbows. Dickie's are always Dope with a solid belt... I love rockin' my pairs, I can do no wrong rockin'em.
3) Just help him understand that going bald is not a disadvantage, but a opportunity to express his individuality. There are not many Rockin' the Bald and Bold Look, you have to be a Real Man to Rock it. I mean, its a look for those who are tired of all the Fake, Superficial Bull. And alot of the time, its definately attractive to the ladies! It adds a toughness to your exterior, people take you more seriously, show you more respect, and Girls always like a guy that shows that he is strong, Unike, with a Versitile Clean Look.
Don't sweat him, just give him the suggestion... drop a little of the propaganda, leave the choice up to him. He has to Rock the look with confidence.
May I recommend one thing though, see that you get him the proper Razor for the first go. That and good quality SunScreen designed for your face or specifically for your scalp. Those are two things that can make or break your first experience. I recommend ofcourse a HeadBlade Razor (Sport preferably) & HeadShade (Also produced by the same company, <HeadBlade.com>)
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your replies. You are so supportive and good role models for having a positive attitude.

Well browny, I agree with everyone else on here. Suggest shaving it, but don't force it. Make the conversation mellow, relaxed. Maybe at dinner or something. Of course you should recommend that he comes here and posts and talk to all of us. This is the greatest group of guys on the internet, always willing to help out with positive messages when that's what you really need. We can show him what being bald is all about, it's a lifestyle. We can help him with the confidence that he needs during this time. Plus, like others have said, it's just hair and it will grow back. If you need anything else, please come back and talk to us.. that's what we're here for!

Hi guys, I need advice for my 16 year old son who is losing his hair.
That was me in high school too. The other guys on here know that I tried to hide it with the "Cesar" cut but after a while that didn't work. It took a few years for me to really except it and by the time I turned 19, I started completely shaving "what was left" off.
There is no real way to guide someone when they are young, they really have to find their own path and then one day "poof" you take that leap of faith and never look back.

You see, this is exactly why I love this site ! O0 Kudos to you Tyler, this site isn't just a place for us bald guys to get together and chat about our chrome domes, it's a place that offers real advise from real people, of different ages and backgrounds, some who just didn't want to fight mother nature, and have gained alot of self worth and confidence in themselves as a result, and some who are bald by choice who also gained alot of confidence in them selves.
We can offer our opinions and our support to total strangers, and give tips and unsolicited product reviews on what we as individuals believe is the best product.
Also to help people such as yourself browny who doesn't want to see her son go through self esteam problems because of social preassures to " Fit In ". We all wish you luck for your son to choose his own path, whatever it may be, but please know that we are all here to help and offer support and advice. As for my advise I think that he will come to recognise all the great actors, musicians, and athletes that sport the Sly look and are very acomplished in their fields, and that being bald isn't a downfall but rather it's a confidence booster, showing everyone that you have nothing to hide, and like all successful people, confidence will take you further in life weather or not you have hair.
I hope that made sence, sometimes the thoughts come into my head faster than I can type.

Welcome, browny! Any advice I was going to mention has been said already.... Has your son looked at this site yet?
-
Hey browny, I was wondering how the advice and guidance was going with your son? I was checking to see if you had any luck on getting him to log into this forum?
-
I told him about you guys and have showed him what has been said. He isn't ready to talk but he reads the comments. He just isn't ready emotionally to have the confidence to act. Maybe still in denial. I really hope he can get through school OK. I had offered he leave school and go to a college we have here in Australia where I thought he might like to be in a different environment but so far he has chosen to stay at regular school. Its his call.
-
That's good that you're not pushing him browny. He'll act on his own terms.
-
Sounds like you are doing everything right to help you son browny. As a high school teacher here in the States I was wondering what sports your son might be involved in. Here athletes, especially swimmers may shave their heads as part of the team concept and comaraderie. Perhaps that is an avenue as well.
-
Like the others have said, you are doing everything you can to help. Keep it up but don't push too hard. Good Luck. O0

Wrestling as well... You need to rock that Mean Look, Intimidation is one advantage every Wrestler is welcome to have going his way O0
