Title: Hello everyone
Post by: Famicom on April 20, 2010, 09:25:33 AM
Lurker for a while and it's time to introduce myself.

I am Michael, a 28 year old with some heavy thinning on top, receding hairline and struggling with it since the age of 20. But it really starts to freak/depress me out since a few months.

MPB runs in the family, I knew at the age of 16 orso that I would have to deal with losing my hair aswell. I always thought I could coop with it when that time would come. I did a fairly good job with accepting it until I picked up a remark from 2 guys who said I should shave it off because what is left there looks like hairs that teenager got before the actually need a shave ( Fuzzy small hairs. )

In the past I would wave those remarks away with that almost every man has to deal with receding/loss of hair or greying. Often people I know ( friends/family )told me once that I am losing my hair but to them it's not a secret since almost all my uncle's, some older nephews from my dad's family are bald ( Horseshoe ), or are really getting there. I decided at my young age ( 16 ) that I would go sly, but now that it's time I lack the balls to actually do it. I am not the talker/sensitive person in new enviroments/new people but I am so worried that my head is A. To big in proprotion with te rest of my body, B. That my facial featureswould point out more, ( big nose, Small mouth, small eyes. ) In general I worry to much about my appearance but as a 28 Single balding Guy I would love to get some advice, comments and a helping hand.

Furthermore I have a appointment with my hairdresser in 3 hours, I am going to make it as short as possible  without buzzing and see what the weekend will bring.

Have a nice day and speak to you later :)

Why not buzz, it will grow back--or most of it that isn't programed to fall out this week or next.  The buzz route, I took it, gives you chance to see yourself w/o the "combover" effect.  For example, yesterday at lunch, a guy a know--not well mind you--had maintained a combover forever, looked old, tired, frankly dull.  Well, here he is top cleaned up sides buzzed to about a #2, and he looks younger, more alert--just more with it than he has in years.  When he smiled he looked better.  Didn't get the chance to say to him that it looked good, and that if he took it further it would be better, but since I do see him fairly often, I''m going to.
You know what the future holds, you're genetically programed to be bald, you have accepted that fact and had serious thoughts and intentions not to wear the bozo ring.  Just remember this is not a disease or disability at all, it''s just a genetic trait.  Time's here now, and your choices are, go slowly bald, hair by hair by hair, or take your situation in hand and go for a short buzz or even shave it.  It's really about just getting over the hump, and it is a huge step when you run the clipper w/o a guard over the top and middle committing yourself.  But at the end of the process, about 20 minutes, when you rinse off, the feeling of freedom and exhilaration will be astounding, that we promise.  Then 30 days, and you'll probably never go back.
Now don't waste that appointment, just tell him to take it to the bone or no guard clip it and shave it yourself--you will not regret it.

Hello Michael.  Listen to Saintc.  He knows from where you are going.  I had a full head of hair (which I hated) and after laser treatments I am almost sly.  I am soon to be 65 yr. young.  I have had so many people tell me I look so much younger and healthier w/o the mop I had.  I am sure this will apply to you as well.  My honest opinion ( for what it's worth)
go for the Sly look.  It will grow back to what you have now, in short time..  Try it, you'lll like it!!!!

Welcome to the forum, Michael. Lots of guys here have gone through what you are going through and realized that totally sly is the way to go. And that they look and feel great without hair. Go for it!

Welcome Michael!
If you really want to go sly then don't worry how you will look - just try it and you'll see.

I went the buzz route--liked it so much I went to full sahving the head with an electric and recently converted to headblade--Once you get started you just want to get closer and closer! Go for the buzz as a start!

Welcome Michael, give it a shot. You never know until you try, but I'd be willing to bet you love it.

Like many guys here, myself included, you can start with a tight buzz and then go from there.
Once you get the inkling to do it though, you just have to go ahead and shave it down.

You're gonna love it, so get on with it!     O0

Hello again,

Been a while since my opening post but just a few moments ago I finally did it. I buzzed it to 2 mm. At this moment I am not depressed nor excited but like the fact I took the step. 2mm but it's a start still beats the silly look I had this morning when getting up :).

Now lets see what everybody else thinks of it with my new look.

Thanks for the support and good information. Keep it up!

Your fear is understandable. I think a majority of the guys here (including myself) had a hard time finally taking the plunge and shaving it off. What I recommend you do (this is what I did) is take it down to a #2 or #3, then see how that looks. then slowly progress downwards eventually to guard #0, than shave it off.

This will not only help you adjust to the look but also the others around you to adjust to the look. OR you can do what some of the more bold members did and just shave it all of and keep it for at least thirty days and see how you feel about the look.

Give yourself some time to adjust to your new look. As for the others - they'll come around. Don't let comments influence you. It's your choice. Nothing else matters.

Famicon, congrats on taking the first big step of mental freedom; getting rid of your mental prison.  Your short cut is a great step!   O0
As  you get used to the shorter hair, you will probably find the desire to go the sly route.  My only advise is to follow your heart and go for it!  You have nothing to lose!  Most people who see us balding types with short/buzzed look and then shaved don't notice the difference.  :o  True; especially guys don't notice, as my experience has shown me.  ;)
The other side of that (which can be a huge (HUGE!!!) benefit; especially for a younger guy) women will start to flock to you.    ;)  That's one I can't explain.  You'll just have to experience it and report back.   O0

Congrats on taking a step towards happiness.  As long as you like it.....and your self esteem grows...others opinions will seem trivial.  Then you can take it bald and wonder what you were waiting for to begin with!!  The happier you are with yourself....the more people will come to accept your new look.

This is only my 3rd post and have been SLY for a few days, but I am the happiest man on earth since my DECISION!!  I was worried about OTHER people---not myself.  Man, what a truly freeing experience.  I went for it all the way the first time--something I knew I wanted to do, but was afraid.  I am so happy I did.  Co-workers and family love it....I have noticed one major difference---I was worried and no one else was!  People also look me in the eye when we speak instead of looking at the top of my head.   I have ALWAYS been confident in everything I did or was about, but the "hair thing" took away so much from me---a cause that was only "IN MY HEAD" and not ON IT.  These guys are correct, women love it....maybe they see the real you.   This site is wonderful and the guys here are the same...full of excellent knowledge and support.  Welcome and be happy.  I really am.

Buzzed for 5 days now.

Family and friends are happy with what I did. Seems They all knew this day would come that I would buzz/shave it off. Only my mother was in a bit off a shock, I did not tell anyone about this but is getting used to it.

Redid my buzz #2 yesterday think I will go #1 saturday. Only problem I have at this time is a slight sunburn but I burn easily, so more caution needed.

Everybody liked it-tremendous support there and here.  On the sun issue, at a #1, apply some sunscreen--everyday, and every time you go out--once you go to the bone---and I'm betting that won't be too long O:O--it's really easy.

If you took the time to sign up on these forums you can expect what we're all going to say. Go for it, or at the very least buzz it down short to get a general idea. I'll tell you now you will never know for sure if you'll look good sly unless you actually do it, even with a #1 it can be deceptive and you won't know for sure what you'll look like bald.

Good luck hope whatever decision you make makes you happy.

Hi guys, it has been a while.

I have kept it buzzed for 3 months now with my good buddy Remington at a close 0.8mm, and going to try a close shave. Getting some extra gillete shaving gel, Mach 3 razor and some moisturising oil after the shave. I got a long weekend coming ahead and really want to try it.

I have a very thin skin some tips before actually go fully sly?

Take a long hot shower it will make the stubble come off easier, take your time don't use too much pressure. If you want the "smooth" feeling you have to go against the grain, otherwise for a first time shaver Id recommend going with the grain to avoid irritation until your scalp adjusts.

Hey guys,

I am fully bald since yesterday, followed every tip I got in this thread and shaved my head. First buzzed it down like I always do to 0.8 mm ( with my Remington ) after that a long hot shower and really rubbed my head clean. Even better then I would do before a date. Dried myself off and just applied the shaving gel at large quantaties over my head. I never was this carefull but I put the blade to the head and did it very slowly. My skin was so tense/tight but I did my first full headshave without any cuts. Had to shave again after 10 mins when I noticed that I missed a few spots and the places where I am bald those small and little fuzzy hairs are hard to get rid off. Never expected that but had that same problem when buzzing the first time.

Got good remarks when buzzing now lets see what people think of shaving.

I myself like it but I never pat myself on the back. Still the best choice to make when balding  O0

Congrats on becoming completely sly!   8)
As you may find, most people don't pay attention to details on others and may not notice the physical difference, since you had a buzz cut for a while.  What people will notice is a change in you and your attitude!  Enjoy this moment and build off of it.  This is the beginning of a bigger, better you!   O0
