Title: Journey to Sly
Post by: lifeinthesouth on April 19, 2010, 01:35:34 PM
Just figured I'd give update on my way to sly. I posted a picture in my original topic while I was trying to decide. I feel like I am moving in the right direction. I have realized after looking a picture of me a few weeks back that I a have changed my looks dramatically.  Not the best photos taken by self with camera phone, but you will get the point.

Looking good O0  But you don't say how you feel about it.  The goal is how you feel, and you should feel great, maybe a little-"Who's the dude in the mirror?" right now, but a lot better than when you started.

Congratulations! The transformation is awesome.  You look great. I can see the glow in your face.  I know it’s made you happier then before.  You look amazing although I can see a slight shadow on the side.  If you haven’t taken the razor and shave it smooth, I think this is the time to do so.  You look a lot better then before.

No I haven't taken the razor to it yet, but I am going to. I keep saying that but I kinda got a time frame in mind. As for how I feel about it. I like it, I can't see me ever letting in grow back out. The wife even made a comment that if I am going to keep that look I won't have to spend $$ at the barber anymore. Not the "I like the way you look" but at least it was a approval. I do like it though, I can tell that I am not worried about it like I had in the past. It is more of a this is me and this is who I am. It has been a weight of my shoulders.

Wives, significant others, partners--& family in general can be a problem.  You're really fortunate to have a wife who seems to understand what this can do to a guy--"weight on my shoulders" is a good description.
She sounds like she may come around and be positive.  You can't understand how much many of us would like the same support, but don't get it, toleration, and an occasional flare up is the best some of us get.  Congratulations on an understanding wife.

Man you look so much better. And you can bet nobody is talking about your thinning hair wisps anymore.

Lookin' good, almost there, guy!  O0

Like Saintc said, you've got it easy; you only have to concern yourself with you and not your wonderful understanding wife.  It's a huge head trip for some folks, and she's there with you!  You, my friend, are blessed, probably more than you know!  O:O

When it's time, do it and enjoy the moment!   8)

Wow what a great transformation!  Take it down to bare wood -- the sooner you take that final step the sooner you'll understand how great it feels.    You look great in your transformed to picture.  You're no longer a guy who's losing his hair.

Looks good south, what a difference!.

You've taken control, and I know you feel much better. You said "a weight has been lifted". It's really true.

Many of us have had that same feeling. I echo what Todd said, once you go down to the skin, that's when you'll feel the ultimate freedom, something I like to call "slydom".      ;)

Enjoy the new you.    O0

In my recent experience... going down to the #1 blade, got more "response" and "Reaction" at work then when I finally shaved it smooth....

I'm glad I took the last step... I was already used to my head shape in the mirror by the time I went smooth.....

You won't regret it!!!

I think you went the right way.  Don't worry.  I went a few months with the buzz before I went slick .  Definitely an improvement.  Take your time and get used to it.  I like slick because it's less mess and time than clippers.  Plus I like the feeling of rubbing my freshly shaved  head,  smoooooooth! 8)

Off with your head!

Or, off with what's still there in the upper hair regions, where the air is thin, the rocks are-lichen covered, and snow lies late.  Would Mt. Everest put up with stubble?  Ming rests his case.  Let the wind blow unimpeded.  You'll love the sensation.  There's a difference in how it feels even after a transition from very short to fully shaven.

I agree with the other guys.  The transformation took years off your look.  Just think, You're only one step away from freedom.

Thanks guys, I feel better this way. I am starting to get the itch to take it down smooth. I realized that this morning as I was doing my morning routine to get ready for work. I am a little concerned about a skin rash though from shaving. I am looking for a good product to use to keep that from happening.

So scratch it.  ;)

I am a little concerned about a skin rash though from shaving. I am looking for a good product to use to keep that from happening.

Be sure to shower before shaving, to soften up the hair.  Use a good quality shaving gel and razor and take your time.  Use an astringent like witch hazel when you're through and that should prevent any breakouts.  Try to avoid shaving over the same area repeatedly (some areas are hard to get completely smooth) because that will irritate your skin.

Once you get to this point, it's REALLY hard not to go the next step to slick smooth.

I promise you it's a whole new level that, once you do it, is nothing like the no guard buzz. After you go for it, you'll have to post how different (or not) it was.

No need to be concerned or to wait to find the right product...the best product to prevent the rash is time...don't rush it the first time. I'm talking set aside a good 30-60 minutes, no interruptions, nowhere to get to, no one bugging you and take it down to the wood.

Start from a tight buzz like you're already sportin' and after (or in) a hot shower, use a fresh, good quality razor and a good shaving cream (a good rule of thumb is use the same products you use to shave your face, except most of us have one razor for the mug and one for the scalp). If you like it, try going against the grain and you'll see even more difference.

A cold water rinse, a little sunscreen and BAM!

Oh you're getting close to the Sweet Spot--Yield, it will be one of the most memorable moments of your life.  O:O

Like the Brothers have said, preparation, then an astringent.  I'd also suggest a after shave balm, Nivea Extreme is great for me.  Then, as has also been said, sunscreen.
You are really going to like this.   O0

YMMV.  I suggest Kiss My Face shave cream with no scent (a brush is optional, but highly recommended).  NO FOAM IN A CAN!  Here is what I do with great results.  Hot shower.  Let my badger brush soak in a glass of hot water.  Wash head.  Apply hair conditioner(Yes you can use it.  It softens the hair)  Let it sit for a couple of minutes.  Rinse.  Shake extra water out of brush.  Add shave cream. (did I mention don't use a can?)  lather on head till you have a nice smooth foam.  Pick your sword (Fushion, Hydro, Straight Razor, Safety Razor, Butter Knife)  Take your time!  Front to back.  I clean my head with face cleanser/scrub (thanks Mike!).  Re-apply cream in between passes.  DON'T shave on bare skin!  Ask me how I know :D  Back to front.  I then clean up the rough spots.  Rinse off with cold water (just trust me).  Apply aftershave balm/Witchazel/Alum bar.  Don't use anything with Alcohol in it!  ALCOHOL BAD!!!

if you are gettin the itch, you just gotta scratch it sooner or later.  the sooner the better.  Looks good now, but wait till you shave it: you won't believe how good you'll feel. O0
