hello fellow chrome domes: i purchased the new schick hydro 5 razor on thursday, april 8, 2010. after purchasing it... i couldn't wait until friday morning 2 give this razor a test run.
as most of U know... i'm an avid fan of the fusion (manual) & recently the M5 razor. i use both (depending on mood) but after shaving with the hydro 5; i'm going 2 include this in my shaving arsenal. O0
i'm a shower shaver so after getting my dome soaked w/ hot water, i apply the shave secret oil, then apply the baldguyz shaving gel on dome & face. then let it soak for about 3-5 minutes. my 1st pass of the HYDRO 5 razor was like butter. the razor glided sooooo slippery on each & every pass on my dome & face.
it has a hydrating gel reservoir (strip) that helps the razor glide icy smooth. i can honestly say that it's a smoother ride then the fusion & M5 & it also gives a slightly better shave.
the only "down-side" is the price compared 2 the inexpensive M5. U can get the schick hydro 5 razor w/ one extra cartridge @ CVS for $8.97 & its refill 4-pack cartridge for $11.99 (still cheaper then the fusion). U can also get it @ walmart for $7.97 & the 4-pack refill cartridge for $10.94.
all in all... if U are a fan of the fusion or M5... U will luv this razor. i'm going 2 use this as my primary razor for the next 30 days. hopefully... it will continue 2 produce buttery smooth glides & results.
PROs: good looking razor (colors... electric blue & white), the handle feels gr8 on the
hand, razor glides icy smooth, & leaves dome baby-butt smoooooth
CONs: the price $7.97 for razor & $10.94 for 4-pack refills (the M5 is only $5.88 for
razor & $5.88 for 4-pack cartridge
Would i buy it again... ABSOLUTELY!!! let me know your story if U have tried out this razor.

Hmmm. Kind of in between the price of the fusion and the M5. I need to build a cabinet for all my razors! I think I'm up to 9 different ones. Guess I'll have to make it an even 10. ;D

[UPDATE--checked google--it was George Bernard Shaw, my bad!] Batteries, yes, foreign currency--yes, even pre-decimal English,, thank you very much. Great now I can start work in a good mood.

It never even occurred to me that some of the terminology would be a bit 'british'. This guy got really popular over here last year. However if you have a really dark sense of humour at all then just check out a guy called Frankie Boyle on Youtube, he is a bit controversial but very very quick.

I too just got the Schick Hydro 5 and here is my take. Let me start with the cons up front imo the ergonomics of the handle leave a lot to be desired. It does not feel as comfortable in my hands as the fusion, and you also have to take into account that the new Gillete Fusion Pro Glide will not be introduced with a new handle, THATS RIGHT, you will use the same Fusion handle that is out now. How do I know, as I said in another post I went into THE Art of Shaving and purchased a pack of their lotions that came with the Gillete Fusion Pro Glide blades. This is a special offer exclusive to the art of shaving. My perception that it feels arkward to handle in my hands is not a total dealbreaker because like any new instrument you can get used to it, but for me hopefully I can get adjusted to it.
Okay now gentlemen that I got the negatives out of the way lets get to the positives, I usually in my routine first apply KOS oil and then on top of that a shaving gel. But since this razor taunts the fact that it has this hydro gel reseviour I felt that the best test would be to omit using the oil to see just how much lubrication, protection and closeness this thing is capable of shaving. Guys I was abolultely floored by the performance, it was like magic, let me break this down so you guys who have not tried this razor understand what I mean. In my experience when I shave one of two things happen either I get to much glide and not enough protection or I don't get enough glide and I feel a pulling and the need to apply pressure to get a close shave. With this razor it was the best of both worlds. It glided so easily and so effortlessly that I did not think I was getting a close shave, but then I put my hand on my skin and it felt totally smooth and silk, no irritation and best of all super duper close. So with my Fusion when I want to get a close shave and use shaving oil plus a gel I get a close shave but I always get some form of irritation, it can range from slight razor burn to nicks and cuts. With the Schick Hydro 5 the blade glided amazingly and I got a close shave with absolutely no razor burn and no nicks and cuts. As an added bonus guys I have to tell you that you flip the gel reseviour back and it becomes a tight spot shaver to get your ears and other tricky places with good protection against irriatation. And I have to note that the new Gillete Pro Glide as only a single blade with I have numerious times used and got cut with. \
Stay tuned tommorow I will be shaving with the gillete pro glide and will have an in depth review.
So this one is a winner in my book despite the fact that the handle did not feel comfortable in my hands. I always have to end off by reminding guys that we are all different and what works for me may not work for you and what works for you may not work for me. So give the Hydro a try and let me know your experiences as well, same goes for the gillette's latest offering. Happy shaving!

I'll throw in my two cents on this razor. I broke down (resistance if futile! :*)) ) and picked up the Hydro 5. I was pleasantly surprised with this razor. It glided SO smoothly and there was little if any irritation. The flip-top single blade was also quite handy and didn't pull at all.
Granted this is the first shave with a new razor, but my prediction is that I will be just as impressed with it in the days to come. It will definitely be added to my shaving arsenal!
(Note) - I have only used this on my face so far. If I continue to be impressed with it, I'll take it for a spin up north.

I purchased the Hydro 5 last night.
My Opinion(s) / Experience:
* Reasonably Priced (compared to HeadBlade, Fusion, Mach 3, etc)
* Glides like BUTTER over the scalp
* Gets that "SUPER BONE CLOSE" type of shaving results we all strive to achieve
* Scalp stays SMOOTHER longer (as least in my case it does)
The ONLY CON I could come with is that when you purchase either razor (Hydro 3 or Hydro 5), it only comes with ONE (1) spare blade. Other then that, I'm a pretty happy camper!!

I bought one this morning post gym. Just finished getting cleaned up. I think that the main con is price, we're getting spoiled by the pricing of the M-5, and price makes it a real contender. The other con--at least for me as a Fusion/M-5 fan, no trim blade, and that makes keeping the face fur neat and sharp on the edges tough.
Otherwise, wonderful shave, we'll see if it outlasts what I have gotten very much used to with my M-5. Let's say I'm enough of a Doubting Thomas that I didn't buy the package of 4 replacement blades at over $10.
Thanks for the intro Mel--for the guys that just don't dig the HB, they certainly seem to be ready to bring out more "toys" for us.

The hydro 3 blade does not have the trim blade, but from my understanding if you flip the the blue thing on top of the hydro 5 back I think there is a trim blade under it.
I bought the hydro 3, shaved my face with it.. Major amount of ingrowns from it I was kinda dissappointed with that later on this evening i'll shave the dome with it and see how that goes.

Well, having learned to do the flip deal, and three days into my trial, there are pluses and minuses for me at least. I rather like the handle better than M5 or Fusion [All my Fusion razors had their rubber pads come loose]. I think the trimmer works better around the ears than either Fusion or M5, and certainly less prone to nick the ear itself.
My main problem is that the shaves are as close as the Fusion, in terms of lasting smoothness, but not as long lasting by several hours than the M5. It certainly has the least perceptible drag of any blade I've used, bar none. I'm also finding that the problem area I have on the back of my head, a cowlick or something, doesn't get cut as close by far. This may confirm my initial impression from using the M5 that the so called higher drag factor was in fact the sensation of the razor lifting the hairs further out of the follicle and cutting them off deeper.
I'm going to use this for another couple of weeks to determine if it is just a matter of adjusting the technique or not. If I can't get as smooth, I'm going home the the M5. That's my opinion at 3 days.

I bought one of the Hydro 5's a few weeks ago and have just cancelled my Rolling Razor automated replacement razor shipping program. No more burns on the back of my head and smoother than my baby's butt. I have found after a week and a half the lotion compartment started looking empty so I just replaced the blade and I'm back in business. Overall this blade rocks! The handle isn't the best but I have gotten use to it.
I wish there was an adapter made so I could put the blade on my Headblade though. Anyone here an inventor?

Well, I'm back w/ M5--it's the close & lasting issue for me. The Hydro 5 is now my #2 backup, and Fusion is 3rd--price and comfort put it there. It was a fun experiment, but for now it's me and My M5--close, long lasting, & great value.

The H5 and Proraso are the near perfect head & face shave for me.

I'm a shower shaver and left my hydro in my shower caddie and the gel strip got destroyed. But other than that it does cut gr8, just got to keep it dry.
