I guess my main concern was whether the sly look really works with a beard or facial hair to be honest!

Why not try it.  Many guys feel it balances the face off.  But, remember, it takes 10-20 minutes to get Sly, it takes 30 days to get an idea of what a beard will look like, and not less than 3 months for most guys to have a beard that begins to look really good.
Give it a shot.

Just do it!
Every man is experimenting with the beard thing at least once in his life I guess (facial hair is a secondary sex characteristic as you may know).

And as saintc said it is more a longterm project so there are no concerns about adjustments necessary.

Look at all the member's pictures posted.  A lot wear goats (Van Dykes, actually, in most cases); many do not.  There's not one goat that "looks funny."  Of course, I might be prejudiced.

I think facial hair, when kept neat and clean helps to balance out the Sly look. Try it...if you hate it you can just shave it off!

Going SLY is actually an easy choice where we SBGs encourage people to try it out and if you don't like it...it grows back...

Isn't it even easier with a beard/goatee...if you don't like it, shave it off?

Personally, I can't wait...March 26th I start growing my facial hair back!!!

The below paragraph I wrote to another guy asking a similar question but it definatly applies to you as well, including the fact that from what I see in your pic you are a good looking guy with a nice dome:

You are a good looking guy either way.  Whatever you choose.  I always say ladies mix it up with their make up and hair styles but us guys get to decorate and get creative and change it up with our facial hair styles.  So its your perogitive as a man to have no facial hair or to have as much facial hair as you choose, goatee, beard, jaw strap, soul patch, clean shaven, etc.  Let your creative juices run wild, some times changing the look can be invigorating, but you are a handsome guy whatever style you choose to have.

Okay now, 30 days for sly, giive the goat 3 months--minimum trimming--so you can see what it can be.  It won't mature until 6-8 months at the earliest.  The itching, it will start at about 2-3 weeks, lasts about a week--and there's no getting around it, itching can really get to you.  Put plenty of hair conditioner on it, and brush it, don't scratch it.  Itching does end, it just doesn't seem like it when it's going on.
