I'm sure I read about using baby oil as a shave oil in here because this is the only bald site I visit. Anyway, I decided to give this stuff a try yesterday because I was sitting around with nothing to do and I thought "why not go and scrape the dome?" (damn, I need a life!).
So I gave my head a good wash and rinse and while my head and hands were still wet I put about 10 drops of baby oil in my hands and gave the dome a good rub with it. Then I got after it with the HB Ghost. I gotta tell you, Shave Secret is cool but it ain't got nothin' on good old J&J baby oil. I did not use any gel/foam over the oil either, although I did occasionally wet my head with plain water. I was able to make repeat passes on stubborn spots without irritation and got the dome about as slick as ever. And the baby oil left a nice scent. I even put a few drops on afterward for a little bit of a shine.
It did gunk up the razor a bit but not all that bad. I found that this was relieved by a cup of real hot water with Dawn dish soap. A quick swirl of the razor in this solution during shaving pretty much got rid of the goo.
Not only does this stuff give one fine shave and leave a nice scent and shine but it is CHEAP! You can buy a literal vat of baby oil at the dollar store for, well, a dollar.
Now my understanding is that baby oil is just mineral oil with a smell. If anybody knows different let me know. But what I was thinking is to use baby oil or mineral oil to coat the blades after shaving by just brushing some on my blades with a Q-tip or small brush. Pacific Shaving makes a dispenser with what looks like a sponge tip for just this purpose. But baby oil would certainly be cheaper.

Smooth as a baby's bottom, eh buddha? ;D I have tried it and have to agree it gives a really close, irritation free shave. I had to stop using it though because my skin is very oily and the continued use made my head break out.

Thanks for sharing Buddha. I've read on here of guys putting baby oil on then shaving gel over it, but not really just baby oil. I've thought about trying it, but never have. I have been using Headslick since I started shaving over 6 months ago and it has worked for me. So why change it right? Well.....I may give the baby oil by itself a try anyway. It sure would be a lot cheaper.

Actually been using it for a while now. I like HeadSlick but its a bit pricey for me. I follow my shave with a cold water rinse then apply witch hazel. For me I get the best results shaving every other day.

I use it every now and then in place of barbasol/head slick/gel of choice if I get irritation while shaving. It does give an extra close shave the only downside I say was my razor was easy about getting clogged.

I really like it, but I have gotten my routine kind of complicated--but it's a great long lasting shave. After showering, I spray some rubbing alcohol on my scalp, and then baby oil. Then I put HS & glycerine in my brush and work up a lather on the dome and my cheeks and neck. After shaving that off with and against the grain, there's enough lather, actually more than enough, so I put a few drops of shave secret on my wet scalp, then re-lather and then spray that with alcohol. There is NO visible lather then, just a thick liquid all over the scalp. I shave again with and against the grain, and surprisingly I am able to remove yet more--visible in the ring in the sink, I'm still smooth 8-12 hours later.

Don't laugh and Iam still expermenting here for what will work best for me but I started shaving with cup and bursh soap along time ago and I had unkle that told me to place two or three drops of olive oil in the soap cup that it helped to lift the hair and to only soap half the face at a time as well as my grandfather used to have a soap dish that when you washed your hands the soap sat on a screen type of deal and drained down and created a liquidy soap ,,,,both of them used straight razors and only had to shave every two to three days ,,,,,,,,I use the unkle s way and only have to shave my face every two days still ,,,,,,going to learn to do the straight razor tho one of these days just for the nastaga of it

Sorry I forgot the most important part of using oils from what they both said .......make sure you wash and rinse well with hot water first to remove any oils in the pores then finish with cold water to close the poors ,,,,,,but if ya dont get all the oils out first it will clog the poors resulting in all the ulgy stuff we hate

I think most any oil used for shaving you head will really help in getting it smooth and allows the blade to glide more freely, be it baby oil or mineral oil, or, my favorite, Neutrogena Body Oil. I have used Neutrogena instead of baby oil, because it is a lighter oil and have a really nice smell. I think baby oil smells like, well, baby's butt, right after a changing.
I have commented about Neutrogena in other treads on this forum, most recently in the
HAS anyone tried out PACIFIC shaving oil? tread. Here's what I wrote there:
"I use just good ol' Neutrogena light Sesame Body oil. Works well, smells good, can use it on the body too, wife uses it, so I started using it a couple years ago. It never clogs a Headblade or any of the Mach 3s or Turbos. And at about $12 to $13 for a 12 ounce bottle, at real bargain, comparatively speaking.
And it's great for those evening back, and body rubs the wife is so fond of. Hummmm, me too.:"
It's more costly than mineral oil or baby oil, about $12 for a 16 ounce bottle. CVS has their own version of the same stuff, all the ingredients are the same, and a 16 ounce bottle is about $8.50. (Unless you can get a CVS EB out of the machine. I'll use it by it's self, or on my head with shave cream on top of that when I shave. Good stuff, IMO
