Title: Lebron James contract
Post by: Tyler on January 20, 2010, 12:31:45 PM
In roughly 6 months Lebron James will be a free agent.  Regardless of what team he ends up playing for, how much do you think his total contract will be worth?

My guess it will be around $250 million

My guess is the Knicks and I would say 5 years at 40 million a year.

With the NBA salary cap, teams are limited to what they can spend without paying a luxury tax. That said, if a deep pockets owner wants to pay the tax, the sky's the limit. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the annual pay is "reasonable" (laughable as that sounds), but the number of years is big.

What if he went to the Bulls...what number would he wear?

I'm assuming he's going to want anywhere from 22 to maybe even 25 mil a year.Heard a rumor he's looking for a three year deal,so that would be in the area of 75. Completely insane,no one is worth that kind of money. As much as I would love to see him in a Knick uniform,I'd rather get three solid starters with that.

He'll be staying in Cleveland even without a championship. He worked with the front office to build a team around him. They now have Jamison for the next 2-3 years, Shaq may be back and they have a solid team. The Knicks/Nets can't pay him any more then the Cavaliers will pay him, and the New York teams will have to build their team around 'Bron and that will take several years again, which I doubt he will want to do again. The Cav's front office has done everything he has asked, and he knows that.

While this is true,if New York could manage to sign someone to go with him (Like Bosh or Amare) and resign guys like Lee and Harrington,it would be a better team (on paper) than what the Cavs have right now.Good younger building pieces in NY right now too.Of course this would take an outrageous amount of money to do,but if I'm not mistaken they have 56 mil to play with this summer. So we'll see. I'd much rather see Donnie bring in guys like Rudy Gay,Joe Johnson,Bosh and maybe Boozer if Lee signs elsewhere.

I guess the most he can get if he leaves the Cavs is $95 million over 5 years.  I bet if there wasn't a salary cap he'd get $250 mil easily.

All I know is that he will not be a Cav.  They only have 9 million in cap space to give him.   Bulls or Knicks is my guess.  Probably the Knicks.  Always wearing Yankees caps  and wearing his BIG APPLE version shoes tells me that it's a forgone conclusion.   I personally think he has no class.  Even if you hate Cleveland you need to humor the fans that you love it.  Kind of like eating an awful meal at your future in-laws.  I'm guessing he'll get 20 million a year for at least 3 years.

This is one of the reasons I haven't watched an NBA game since the strike.

I guess it depends how many extra fans he puts in the seats. I remember here in Philly fans used to turn out to watch Iverson play. If the Sixers won, it was just gravy. You could notice the difference as soon as he left.

I'm so glad "King" James finally enlightened the world with where he'll be playing basketball for the next few years. Now we can move on to more important things like NFL training camps opening this month!!!

I was amazed by the unprofessionalism displayed by the Cavaliers owner (Dan Gilbert) with his comments.
LeBron is an employee (albeit a highly paid employee) not an owner. It wasn't like he pulled an Art Modell.

I can understand the anger, and I do feel for the fans of Cleveland, but let's be adults here.

Hey, at least my Warriors got an All Star PF (David Lee) for a back up small forward, a back up center, and a never-was PF.

Hey did you guys hear that Lebron is going to play for the Heat  :*))  It's bad when my Mom knows that he went to the Heat. ;D  Between his square dance get up, him referring to himself in the 3rd person, and the barrage of "at the end of the day" I'm glad it's over.  I've never seen a guy so full of himself..........except for the Cavs owner!  What an idiot.    ???

I read that letter right after LeBron made the announcement. I thought as well that it was very unprofessional. Using comic sans font, and some of the comments.

But Dan Gilbert is too smart to make a mistake like that. He started his company from scratch and grew it to a billion dollar corporation. He was very smart the way he ran the Cavs. (He also got very lucky 7 years ago in the draft.) He had that letter written long before Thursday. He knew LeBron was gone. LeBron never returned a single message Gilbert left for him since the season ended. Yes, LeBron did quit in the playoffs; he knew then he was leaving. (talk about a lack of class, James has none). He knew he would receive a lot of national backlash. But he knew he needed to get the Cleveland community to rally around the Cav's, and if he had to humiliate himself, he would. It worked.

Yeah teams can trade players whenever they want.  They can refuse to give a new contract whenever they want, but when a player who gave 7 years of his services to cleveland UNDER PAID by the way, let's cry about how it's unprofessional.

Grow up owners.  Players have full control now and go players!!!!  Look at the cavs owner, you know what Lebron could have gone somewhere else for those 7 years.  You got enough money from everything involving Lebron.  Now get over it.    So what if he wants to try a new team?  It's not like Cleveland would keep him forever.  No, if they felt that there was a win situation for them by trading him they would do it.

Gilbert's rants seem to be all about loyalty. Why else would he be critical of a hometown hero leaving? But I find it interesting that Gilbert:

1) Fired the Coach of the Year (Brown)
2) Fired the GM that helped assemble that team (ferry)
3) Tried to lure Tom Izzo from Michigan State for bookoo bucks.

Gilbert is acting like a whiny little school girl that got dumped.

Sorry, just my take.
