Title: Back home from surgery - fun stories to tell about my experience
Post by: pdxtodd on January 13, 2010, 05:52:31 PM
I had been having extreme pain under my left ribs for the past 6 months and finally "manned up"  and went to the doctor in early October to figure out what the issue was.   After having "every test known to man" done to figure out what the issue was, the doctors narrowed it down to pancreatic cancer (not a good thing) or my gall bladder.    Tests showed some abnormalities in my gall bladder but nothing conclusive on either site (gall bladder or pancreas).   I had my gall bladder removed yesterday via laprascopic surgery -- and the surgeon said that my gall bladder was definitely in bad shape -- although no gall stones.

I did have fun with my slyness in the hospital.   When they were preparing me for surgery I asked them to not mess my hair up -- which had several of the nurses laughing out loud.   I also had several nurses rub my head and comment how great they think sly guys look.    Continued confirmation that sly is good.  I can guarantee you that I would have been in some high state of panic going in for surgery with my rug on - afraid that it would fall off or pop-up or shift to the side of my head - either before, during, or after surgery.    Without a rug I had zero anxiety over my "hair"!   Yet another affirmation that I made the right choice.

For those of you who are out there watching the postings and who are on the fence - as a recent convert (12/4/2009) I can honestly say that dumping my hairpiece and going completely sly was one of the best decisions (beyond picking my wife and having kids -- all 5 of them) I've ever made in my life.    If you're thinking about it and are anxious and worrying what other people will think -- you're wasting energy on something that doesn't matter to anyone other than yourself.   As the company just a few miles from my house says - Just Do It!

Glad it was just the gall bladder.  That thing hurts--lost mine many years ago--and my youngest daughter just lost hers this year--in her twenties--so don't think it's necessarily an "old man's disease."  The doctor said his youngest patient was 13!

Take it easy with the recovery--keyhole is easy, when they "slice and dice" it's a little more uncomfortable.

I'm sure you're very relieved that it was your gall bladder and not  pancreatic cancer ...     Hope you have a speedy recovery.
