Good Morning everyone and nice to meet you all. For those of you suffering through the cold and the wet, know the high today here in sunny Honolulu will be 81 degrees. So, come celebrate Christmas in the tropics. Anyway...back to business.
I am really am very excited to find this forum. I have been toying with the idea of going sly for a while now. I usually keep my mane between a 1 and 2 guard with my clippers mostly because it is easy to stay within the grooming standards of my current employer, the US Navy. But, something about the almost shaved look has always left me feeling like the job was half-done, so here we go.
I am a happily married, 25 year old, father of 2 and it is time for a change. My New Year's resolution is to give this a shot for 30 days and I have it on good authority that I can expect Santa to bring whichever shave system I choose to make this happen. I was hoping to win the Shadow giveaway (like most of you I'm sure), but now it's decision time. I shave my face with the Panasonic 8109 wet/dry and have read many good things about head-shavers who use it and I may end up there one day for the sheer convenience, but not to start. So here is my question for the group...
I want a blade. Is the shadow really the best? I know everyone is different, I'm just looking for some solid recommendations.
What are the products everyone can't live without? Pre-shave, during, post and maintenance?
Thanks in advance for all your help. I'm ready, let's make this happen.

In many things the rule of KISS* applies, and it applies to SLY too. I would buzz w/ no guard, take my usual multi-blade razor, whatever it might be, the regular shave creme you use now and after a really nice long hot shower and shampooing, apply some baby oil or Shave Secret, whatever, lather, then slowly, repeat slowly, remove the remaining stubble w/ the blade. Slowly because you're going to be learning about your scalp--there's a quick learning curve, but a curve nonetheless. Once smooth, apply an after shave balm, I use Nivea Extreme--and since you're in a sunny climate, some sunscreen--never forget the sunscreen.
Once sly, experiment, HB, Fusion, M5--find the razor that suits you and your scalp and makes the shave not only easy but a pleasure as it is to almost all of us. Try Headslick--my favorite, Baldguys, everything you want--you will have a full drawer of shaving stuff by the time you're pretty much settled into your routine--it's pretty much unique to every guy.
But most of all, enjoy the freedom, it's overwhelming and powerful--you're really going to like this, we promise.
*Keep It Simple S[well you know the rest]!

Welcome to the site Andy. So glad you found us. I think Saintc has covered all the basics. Since the hair grows in different directions, it is important to remember which way it grows in order to get a really smooth, baby butt shave.

Thanks Saint. Gotta say, all the positive energy on this site makes this a much easier decision.

:/O :/O :/O, I don't know about "decision" it's just too natural to call it anything but the only way---you'll soon understand what we're talking about--it is a rush the first time, a real rush.

Welcome. Thanks for your service in the Navy. You'll love sly. It'll be the best Christmas gift you ever gave yourself.

Welcome!
Everyone is different. I personally use a Fusion and HeadSlick. Can't get more simple than that!

Welcome Andy!! I personally get the best and quickest shave from the HeadBlade Sport (I haven't tried the S4 Shadow yet) using a variety of shave creams. My favorites are HeadSlick, Bald Guyz, and Pacific Shaving Oil.

Hi Andy! Always good to up the count of Navy here... What's your rate?
I was in the same boat as you, shaving to a #1 or #2... while I didn't go sly full-time while I was in the Navy, I did shave it clean several times.
As GA said, everyone is different and different combos work for different people... personally, I use the Headblade Sport (with Gillette Atra Plus Blades) and Bald Guyz Shave Gel and that works out great for me... when I'm traveling, I use Shave Secret, which is available at Wal-Mart.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll be gearing up this week and probably do it this weekend sometime while I have the time off. I will definitely get a picture up.
And for Rob, I am a CTI based out of Pearl.

If you're like many of us, once you shave your head, you'll find Sly is the only way to go.

I'm about 8 hours SLY now! Little rough going out of the gate, lots of redness/razor burn but easing now. Should I expect this to continue for a while?

Take a look in the threads on shaving, routines, etc. You'll find some reviews and rec's on various products to tend to the scalp. I like to wipe down w/ a cotton pad soaked in hydrogen peroxide, then rub some benzyol peroxide and hydrocortizone in to control the redness. Then I use Nivea Extreme. Red goes away. And it will "toughen" up. Don't forget to exfoliate to keep the foliciles open.
