Title: KKK
Post by: PhriendOfChrist on March 13, 2007, 02:24:37 AM
So...I've been really excited about shaving my head recently.  I think it will happen within the next week or two.  It is currently 4:18am as I type this and I just realized that I live in Howell, MI -- the place where the Klu Klux Klan was founded.

I mean, of all the phreaking places that I could possibly live in the world -- I just so happen to live in the place where the KKK started!!!

Don't get me wrong, I plan to shave it off anyway -- but I'm not sure how well it's gonna go over in this city.   :-\

Actually, whenever I tell people that I live in Howell, the first thing they always say is, "Isn't that where the KKK is?"

Of all the phreaking places....

some of us have been thru this whole skin head / klansman thing. if people are stupi enough to make quick judgements based on appearence without finding out what a person is all about, then they have the problem. a warm smile and a pleasent hello goes a long way. oh yeah, WELCOME to SBG.

Welcome to SBG. Broad brush generalities (without knowledge) are dangerous and usually inaccurate things.

Welcome Phriend.  Glad you have joined us.  As far as your worries of shaving your head goes...Do what you want and what makes you happy.  Don't worry about what other think. If you live that way YOU yourself will never be happy. I know what you are saying though. I know it may be more so where you live but it's really everywhere. I often get strange looks from many different kinds of people and of all races. Even though I'm doing what makes me happy I often wonder what exactly is going through there head. But hey, we only have a short time here so do what makes you happy. Like some of the other sly bros. have said, if people are going to judge you from an apperance first without getting to know you then do you really care to be in their company anyway? One Love, and welcome agian.

:/O Dear Phriend. Has it occurred to you that you were PUT in Howell, MI [my wife is from Detroit and later White Cloud] to dispel the sickness personified by the KKK? The bros told you truly: let your dome and honest, warmhearted smile present the image of Christ, your namesake. I do not remember any NT author ever saying that witnessing to the world would be easy. That's why you are in Howell. Professor Melon

Wow, great post ProMel!  Great, great, post.

I agree with the others too.  I have faced that skin head thing. Being from the south and having a thick southern accent and looking the way I do (tattoos, earrings, shaved head), I get that reaction a lot.  It just gives me an opportunity to prove them wrong.

Welcome PhriendofChrist!!  As others have said, many of us have had the reactions from people thinking we're racist, but proving them wrong is the best part.  It's funny, but all the people I knew back in my hometown that were racists didn't shave their heads...

Yeah, this is a good point from Tyler. Most of the people that I know of that were, or "acted", racist when I was younger didn't have bald heads.  Some not even close. It's too bad, and very sad, people have these certain kinds of stereotypes of people when they don't even know the half of it. For instance, there was a guy I knew of a few years ago and the way he would dress most people would put him in the "wannabe black" stereotype. But from everything I heard about him he was as racist as you get. You just never know? That's why people need to get to know someone first before judging them by their "cover."

Yeah, his daddy probably didn't hug him enough or something like that...There's always some kind of excuse for racist, or just plain hateful people.  Who knows bro?
Peace.

Welcome newest SBG bro! Let me just say, as a bald Caucasion that worked in a State Run Maximum Security Facility for 5 years, even inmates can tell what you are about.... simply by your character. I have had MANY, and I mean dozens, of Non-Caucasion inmates come up to me on the streets, over the past few years, when their sentences were completed, and give me a handshake, small hug, and a simple Thank You, for always being me. Firm, fair, and consistant.... it sounds simple, but treat others as you like to be treated and most times you get the same in kind. Sure there always what if's.... but To Risk nothing, is to have nothing. Try it out, if you feel awkward or get harrassed and just can;t deal with it, that's OK btw, just grow it back, if you have the luxury. Just my 2 copper.  Again... welcome.   O0

I think again we can blame society for labeling a certain group of people because of their choices. Skinheads, KKK, Blackpanthers etc. , they all express their freedom of speech, its when it begins to control our lives is when it becomes a society issue. Stay Sly....
