I've been noticing a reaction I have, and I have also seen it in other Sly Guys as well as in guys who are profoundly bald but not shaved.
At times if tension or aggravation, I rub my scalp. For example, I was in an airport--delayed flight announcement. My hand went straight to my scalp for a quick rub--then I noticed the same thing with three other sly guys in the waiting area. Once guy flipped open his computer and must have been checking alternatives or e-mailing, because he would stop working on the laptop and rub his head. It happened again to me several times driving back to town Sunday in lousy weather. A slow down, some one cutting into my lane, all the usual irritations of driving on the Interstate, and bang, right after my hand was on my scalp. It's sort of like having a built in security blanket, think Linus in Peanuts.
Am I the only one who's seen this behavior? As I drove, realizing that it sort of calmed me down, my thoughts turned to the expression that a person was so upset that they tore their hair out--could that expression just be a further indication that in troubled times man is hard wired into getting to his bare, smooth scalp even if he's not lucky enough to be Sly :/O :/O :/O.

Great observation there! I feel as if my massaging my "gray matter" before it boils over, just kind of like the Linus comment.
I have even seen guys when pondering (with or without facial hair) do the mustache massage...I know I do even without having one.

You know you're right, my beard gets some attention too--oh well, gets us through the day :D

Same for me, when I am thinking I fiddle with my facial hair. And I agree, the bald head is like a security blanket in a way, when I get excited or nervous I find myself rubbing it.
-
same here with the head rub.
"What do you MEAN the flight is canceled with no alternate routes?!" ::cue hand to head rub::
-
I'm doing it, too. Before going sly, I used to play with my hair. After I started with the head shaving it happened more than once that while I was in my thoughts my hand was searching for the hair to curl and then I noticed there's something wrong.
Sometimes I'm tapping with my fingers on my dome just for the sound it makes ::)

my fiddling with hair days are over.
-
I do the security blanket head rub sometimes
-
Yeah.... it's sort of like pulling an Al Bundy of the scalp.......

Here I thought I was the only one! I'm sitting here working on an intense business issue for one of my clients and I've been rubbing my head all day. Prior to 12/4/09 I never did that (the day I became free from the rug).

Relish the freedom!!!

Yep - me head rubber too - and if it's a real problem I drum my fingers on my head -
-
Yeah, I used to run my hands through my hair all the time when I was reading or really concentrating on something for work. I didn't even realize that I was doing it, ususally. Sometimes I'd go to the men's room after a session of corporate heavy lifting, see my jacked-up hair in the mirror, and think "how the hell did THAT happen?"
Now I just rub my head instead. Can't get messed up - another upside!
-
For me, rubbing my head is a sign that I am getting tired. When I was on the road doing long hauls my wife when she was along for the ride pointed out to me that everytime I start to get tired I rub my head, so I'd better find the next rest area/truckstop pull over and go to sleep.
-
Love to rub my head to make sure I am still BALD
-
I pat my head repeatedly with one hand and simultaneously rub my belly with the other if I am ever "of two minds" about something. I then go with the winning hand. Cautionary note: This doesn't go over big in job interviews or work evals.

So glad it's not just me!
I find that I'm mindlessly touching or rubbing my head a lot during the day. Or just resting a hand on the back of my head.
It's actually very relaxing.

saintc
I find myself rugging the back of my head when I am at a long meeting
However, the "goatee stroke" is more relaxing and fun to do

Nope, you are not alone in this. I find myself rubbing my scalp a lot too, especially during tense moments or when I'm frustrated or exasperated.
I've even come up with a variation, the "facepalm to scalp rub transition" which occurs after I've heard/read/watched something profoundly stupid. (i.e. listening to anything Glenn Beck has to say.)
Sadly though, this happens so often these days that its just become as much of a reflex as blinking...
-
Actually, my hand passes over my dome more often when it's a short buzz than when it's SLY.
-
I used to compulsively run my fingers through my hair when I was under pressure. Funnily enough that was the same area that thinned out first ::)
Now I find myself rubbing my scalp instead.. right on that one balding spot rather than the areas that are just thinning!
-
Now that you mention it, I do rub my head a lot. I guess it's comforting because it feels good. Also, sometimes I tend to have to slake off the oils that would normally be wicked up and captured by hair. And as much as I hate to admit it, being able to rub or scratch my scalp without hair in the way is actually a bonus, even if it's the only one. Thanks for posting this. :)

I do rub my head a lot, especially when driving and stuck in traffic! When i had long hair I used to habitually curl it round my finger, as do my sister and dad (must be a family trait!!) but now I can't do that!! ;)

Those bald spots, smooth, soft and warm, are where I find my hand reaching to when I'm waking up in the morning, it sort of defines the areas, totally bald, sparse, and the shadow of the rim.

"A facepalm to scalp rub transition" which occurs after I've heard/read/watched something profoundly stupid. (i.e. listening to anything Glenn Beck has to say.)
I rub my head and stroke my beard a lot. But the only time I listened to Glenn Beck, both of my hands were required to grab my stomach as it began to cramp painfully. In fact that seems to happen whenever I hear anything on the Faux Network.

I did the same thing when i had long hair (interesting total random side note: in all my dreams i still have long hair :)).
For years (before i went sly) i had a very long goatee... i'd always be playing with that. >:D
Now I do the head rub all the time... and like someone else said, i pat my head at times, too. it's kinda funny because when there's music playing i'll sometimes pat my head in time like a drum :/O
