I wasn't going to but with the number of photos I have seen with goatees, I will begin the process prior to going sly to see how it's coming in (salt/pepper) and looks
With that in mind, I was wondering if it was a good idea to go to a barber for the first head shave and not do it myself
What do you think?
By the way, my before photo is posted on the gallery
Thanks for listening

Personally I think you should get the full enjoyment of your first shave at home. Believe me.... you will want to look at it over an over..... and you will not be able to stop rubbing. All of these things will be difficult to enjoy fully if you have to make your way home.

Mike's absolutely got this, Bull's Eye--either do it yourself, or have your wife do it--it's for you remember--not the barber. You're going to be your own barber most days.

If you can't get a hold of a set of clippers then you'll want to either buy a set or go to a barber to buzz your head down to stubble. Razors get jammed up quickly when shaving actual hair. As for having the barber shave your head I'd recommend against it. Why risk getting a blood-borne pathogen for something you might as well do yourself since you're going to be doing it yourself anyway.

I'm glad I did my first shave myself. You can take your time and get to know your scalp as you go through the process. I know it sounds kind of silly but it was a special experience for me... I thoroughly enjoyed each step. O0

another vote for doing it yourself here. When you eventually get to doing it every day, you'll have to do it yourself, so when is better than to begin now? O0

Do it yourself. I have not heard many positive things about barbershop shaves. I do agree though, you can go to one to get it buzzed all the way down, but use the razor yourself.
Edit: There is also something very memorable about taking that first pass with the razor, pausing for a minute, and wondering if you really made the right choice. Of course you did silly, and it's too late to turn back at that point.

Bottom line up front. You'll be the one shaving your head every day...or every however many days that you choose. You can use a barber, but, to me, that is just missing a chance to practice!
Buzz it short and then settle in for a good...sloooooow...shave. Take your time and use this as a chance to learn about all the wonderful dips, dives, bumps, and curves that are your head.
You'll be doing this a lot. Why let someone else get to have the fun???
Good luck!

To be honest, I would agree with everybody else and say do it yourself. It is very rare to find a barber here in the UK who will do a full wet head shave (something to do with health and safety I have been told).
The times I have found ones who will do it it has rarely been satisfactory and certainly nowhere as smooth as I can achieve myself. One time he left so much stubble with his 'cut-throat' razor I could have got a smoother finish with my Wahl Baldfader clippers with no guard.
As for learning the geography of your head, that is paramount. I know my head perfectly and which way the grain goes at any point. Get it wrong and get a rough shave or worse still, nicks and cuts.

Yeah, doing it yourself is like enjoying that first beer......savor it.

Ok....the consensus is to do it thyself first...I agree...
However, I'm intrigued by the prospect of going to a barber...a MASTER barber, mind you for the full professional treatment straight edge scrape.
Anybody done this? I think Tyler's done it once or twice. Anyone else? @n(

Yup went to a Greek barbershop...awesome straight razor headshave..very bald..very clean..and I was going from a hairy head of about 5 weeks growth!
I say a barbershop shave, especially from going from some growth to slick bald is way cool !
