Title: My Daughter is in the Emergency Room this AM........
Post by: Mikekoz13 on November 03, 2009, 07:12:55 AM
Cheryl just took her in and Cheryl was scared when I spoke to her on the phone a few minutes ago.

McKenna got very sick last Friday night with a high fever. The fever persisted all weekend with it getting a bit better yesterday. She also had a very sore neck on one side when she woke in the middle of the night Friday night. Saturday afternoon I noticed a very red spot about the size of a quarter on her chin and we thought she had just been sleeping on it.
Sunday that spot looked about the same and we were keeping an eye on it. ... and then late yesterday it spread to cover her chin and underneath her chin. This morning it had spread even more.

Please keep my daughter in your thoughts and Prayers today guys........

Sending her my best. Keep us updated. Is this the same daughter who broke her arm? If it is, poor thing has had one hell of a year.   :-\

Thanks to all of you guys. The responses in this thread are a perfect example of why SBG is such a special place with so many incredible Men as members.  My wife and I needed this today guys.... we both thank you from our hearts.

Here's an update for you:

Cheryl is tough as nails but when she called me this AM I could tell she was scared. She headed to the emergency room while I waited for her call once she talked to the doctors. She called and I immediately knew I had to head out by the sound of her voice.

It's 90 minutes to the hospital in Gettysburg from my work and by the time I arrived there it had been determined that McKenna had a severe case of facial cellulitus. Apparently she was bitten by something, probably a spider, on her chin. SHe never had a virus over the weekend.... the fever and vomiting were symptoms of this.

The swelling and redness on her chin had spread over her entire left side of her face, her chin, all the way up to and near her eye.
The hospital immediately pumped her full of antibiotics and within two hours the redness and swelling had backed down to her mouth and she was feeling incredibly better. We have to take her back to the hospital in the AM for another round of antibiotics but by the weekend she should be back to 100%.

Again, my Friends ....... Thank you from all of us.

I'm glad to hear things are getting better, but what the heck was it?  I saw the red spot and thought chicken pox, but chicken pox doesn't bring all that other stuff does it?  And it makes spots all over too...

Good new Koz! We'll keep the prayers going for McKenna though. It's strange that she didn't have any viral symptoms. Cellulitis can lead to some pretty nasty stuff.

We wish her a speedy recovery. :@`

She was throwing up and had a fever for a few days. I believe we were literally just an hour or so away from a real problem. If that had reached her eye...........

Well we wound up back in the emergency room about 10:15 last night. Her face swelled back up pretty good and  it scared the Hell out of us. So I ran her to the hospital. They checked her out and sent us home about midnight.

We went back in this AM at 8 AM and she received her second dose of intraveneous antibiotics. SHe's back to her old self today...... though her face is still swollen and red in some places.

Cheryl and I are just wiped out tired.

Mike, check out McKenna's room thoroughly.  Could there be a nest of spiders and she got bit more than once?

Mike, I'd get an exterminator in ASAP and spray down the whole place.

Well the doctors told us today.... no way it's a spider bite or any other critter...... but she definetly has cellulitus. They said the germ can enter thru the very smallest of scrapes or breaks in the skin.

But she is definetly well on her way to full recoverey.... 10 days of VERY strong antibiotis..... two to three days more until the majority of the stuff on her face is gone.

Indeed cellulitis can do just that! When I was in the military I saw a bunch of this stuff as a medic.  You wouldn't believe how quick this stuff can migrate. Good thing you all caught it quick. 'Cause as you know it can fester into some nasty stuff (not proper to post here)!

So good to hear that McKenna is doing better! O0 I can't wait to meet up with you Koz. We'll have a great time.

Still in my prayers...

hey mike:  i haven't been active here at the sly forum & i just finished reading your post.  1st of all.... i'm glad that your little angel is doing fine.  we have her in our prayers as well as the rest of your family.  2nd of all... i strongly disagree with the doctors.  i'm no doctor but i'm a very proud RN and i have taken care of patients with spider bites many times.

matter of fact.... i posted a thread (i think it was titled..."kill that spider" or something like that) about a year and a half ago on this forum.  i tried locating it but was unable.  maybe someone... here can find it.  anyways.... basically the message was on that thread is that if u saw a spider in your house is 2 immediately kill it.  because... i have taken care of several patients with cellulitis in the past as a RN that were cause by spiders. >:(

i will share one case that i had.  it was a male patient who had cellulitis of the scrotum. :'(  yes... i said scrotum.  his cellulitis of the scrotum was so severe that he had 2 b hospitalized.  the infection was so bad that he need surgery 2 drain the infection out.  his cellulitis was so intense that his scrotum was the size of grapefruits.  it was probably bigger.  man.... it was difficult on me as a RN taking care of him because as a man (i can only imagine how painful it was).  it was soooo painful that i had 2 administer heavy intravenous pain meds 2 him every 2 hours.

basically... spiders can cause cellulitis.  that's why if i see a spider in the house.  i''m going 4 the kill.  trust me... u don't want 2 have cellulitis of the scrotum.  :(

on a side note.... if any sly member can find that post.   repost it because it's a gr8 message 2 kill that spider. O0  say no 2 spiders and yes 2 NOT having cellulitis. O0

Glad all is on the mend.  Re spiders--they were a problem at our place in Waveland MS before Katrina blew it to Hell, but our exterminator said kill the other bugs, the spiders will go too--obvious, they fed on the bugs.  So, he used a bug killer that was safe for children and pets, bugs dies--lots of roaches in that damp climate and closed house--and spiders went away.
