Title: Hangover Cure
Post by: Tyler on March 09, 2007, 12:20:20 PM
Since we have a lot of drinkers here, I figure there would be a lot of ideas on the best way to cure a hangover.  What do you do when you have a hangover?

I try to take a pain reliever and water before going to bed.  If that doesn't work, I love having a good bloody mary the next morning.  Though, a bloody mary only works if I don't have to go to work that day.  If I do have to work that day, and more alcohol cosumption isn't the best way to go, then I like to grab a smootie with an energy and immunity boost.  The ultimate backup is a very large Gatorade.

I had a roommate that worked for Johnson and Johnson and gave me a tip on a drug called Motilium that if you take before going to bed will eliminate all posibilities of a hangover in the morining.  You can't get it in the U.S. but the pharmacia in Mexico has it... >:D  We bought a bunch when we went to Mexico for his bachelor party...worked great!

You can also get it in the UK.  http://www.motilium.co.uk (http://www.motilium.co.uk)

As always, check with a doctor before taking any medications.

I'm with Paulie B. on this one. Gatorade has a lot of electrolytes and other nutrients in it that your body needs to help combat the effects of alcohol. My wife used to work for Gatorade in quality control and is pretty knowledgable in food science. She's almost as smart as Melon ... even though she's from California.  $@y

Was it the upcoming St. Pat's day brought this to mind?   Anyway, I'm with y'all on this one.  Best thing is the water/pain killer before bed.  Had a professor told us hangover due to drop of potassium and sodium as a result of pissing all night, so the Gatorade is right on I guess.  Works for me.  Also always found best thing to put in stomach the day after was tomato soup.  Problem with being past those college years is you can drink as much as always, just don't bounce back the way you used to.

I agree with Paul and Schro.

Gatorade is the way to go. However, there is a secret to remember.

Have the bottle next to your bed and everytime you go to the bathroom, drink some Gatorade. It may seem like it defeats the purpose of going to the bathroom, but in the long run you will wake up feeling better.

If you have no Gatorade another great thing to do is as soon as you get home.

Grab yourself a big glass of water and eat 10 Saltine crackers. The don't taste bad when you are drunk and it will help soak up the vodka or beer.

Dr. Noner is here to share his 2nd hand knowledge from dating a Pharmacist.

You should never take Ibuprofen for a hangerover.  That's goes for all the advil and motrin products too.

Apparently it causes a chemical reaction that can make you quite sick or give you stomach bleeding.

They don't really tell you this and the only waring on the bottle is "you should not consume this product if you have 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day"

Just thought I would give everybody some good advice:  Stick to Tylenol.

Dr. Noner

*This advise is not intended as actual medical advice, but is heresay from a Pharmacist that Noner used to date.

In addition to all the above....SLEEP is invaluable.  One of the biggest things alcohol does is rob you of deep restorative sleep....even if you "slept" for 7 or 8 hours.

If you've got to work the next day (ya probably shouldn't have been out the night before) but you'll just have to suffer the sleep aspect.

But in addition to the above remedies/preventative measures.....Bitters & Soda is incredible.

Bitters has a small amount of alcohol and lots of healing properties (made from tree bark and other herbs).

Even the small amount of alcohol takes the edge off and you can have it at work....and it's not like having a half-pint of vodka & bloody mary mix at your desk.

Can't believe we've failed to mention the most important part of hangover recovery....the big greasy breakfast the morning after a big bender. Personally, I'm partial to huevos rancheros or corned beef hash with a side of has browns & rye toast.

Never have had the opportunity to do this....but I had a science professor tell the class that the quickest way to sober up if you have that "too buzzed" feeling or if you have to drive home is to somehow have access to an oxygen bottle & mask and breathe straight oxygen.

Apparently it radically speeds up the metabolism of the alcohol through the system.   Probably why cool, fresh air makes ya feel better when that "too buzzed" feeling is afoot.

Perhaps Medic or another medically oriented member could elaborate or debunk?

As you can see....mine is 2/3 empty

<-----------------------------

Which is the same damn thing as empty in my rule book.

Which reminds me  0~~

For those of us who REALLY know how to throw back a pint....does it bug you to see another "man" get a nice frothy mug and then take a little girly martini sip off the top?

My mugs are never more than half full within seconds of being served that baby.

By the way....Tyler did not disappoint last Friday O0

For a beer, I couldn't agree more. When I am in a serious drinking mood, I subscribe to something I coined the "burning flame theory". Burn as bright as you can for as long as you can, than pass out.

However, a good martini is meant to be sipped. Any reference to martini & girly in the same sentence shall be ignored.  !@!@

I am with ya, schro-bro.....it's only girly when applied to a beer.

martini sips are for martinis....not beer

I'm pretty sure this works, but I've only had O2 at the same time as an IV.  When I was in college, I was dating a nurse at the health clinic.  A couple of times my buddies and I would go in to get an IV drip and some 02 after a rough night.

Note: The Las Vegas airport has an oxygen bar in it.

Forgot about that one Tyler, but yes it does work.  Used to put the oxygen masks on in the KC130 after a hard night in Ankara, Osan, or whereever.  Always worked.

gatoade/powerade or something like that works for me. don't usually get hangovers. but when i do they are bad. there are some things that you can take before drinking or bed but i haven't tried them. i'll bet rob has some good ideas ;)

I always have good ideas...

The surefire hangover cure is two fold:

1.  Never ever mix your poisons!  That means if you're on beer... stick to beer!  If you're on liquor... stick with one type of liquor!  That means rum and rum shots are ok... but don't throw vodka into the mix...

2. (most of you will not believe this is coming out of my mouth) Moderation and hydration!!!  Have a glass of water every two or three drinks throughout the evening...

However, should you decide to mix up the chemicals or overindulge, try the following (however, there is no known cure for a hangover)...

1.  Drink a LARGE glass or two of water before bed... Mix some lemon juice and honey into at least one of the glasses.
2.  Avoid taking any type of pain killer, i.e., aspirin, Tylenol, Motrin, Aleve, etc, that night (or even the next morning if you drank a lot)... there has been lots of research done and the findings are that mixing these type of pain killers with alcohol can cause liver damage.  I've had two friends that typically took pain killers before going to bed after a night of hard drinking and both had reduced liver function (one was down to 25%, the other 45%).
3.  While the hair of the dog is popular, it really does more damage than good... it will get rid of the hangover, but you will be drunk again.
4.  The next morning, you can take aspirin to help alleviate the pain, and drink a lot of water to rehydrate.

Trust me... I'm a professional drinker from way back!   O0

I'm surprised none of you didn't list the #1 most sure fire cure for any hangover.

Just stay drunk!

If you never stop drinking, you never get hungover.......

Now, excuse me - It's time for another....

I can't offer up any proof or otherwise to these suggestions, however a guy that used to work for us would hit the O2 the morning after to help with the hangover, and he always said it worked great.  The IV would be obviously beneficial due to the hydration offered up.  BaldRob offered up some great advice and gatorade the next morning always worked pretty well for me. The Oxygen works great! After a rough night or weekend, I would walk into the shop and grab the cutting torch, crank up the oxy bottle and take some good deep breaths.
