Title: Those of you with beards...
Post by: DA_Carr on October 22, 2009, 08:34:48 PM
Just curious how many of you have grown beards with the bald head.  How about showing them off?  Curious to see how you transition from bald head to beard.

Working on the full beard for the winter.  I will try to take pictures to show it off.  I think it looks scraggly, but I have received positive comments from the women in the office.

The trick is getting the inverted sideburns even.  Using a Mach 3 or Fusion, I line the edge of the blade up with the top of my ear until it hits it.  Keep it parallel to the ground and pull up against the grain.Since I am using my ear as a guide, it keeps it even on both side every time.  Then I just need to tidy up the stray hairs on the cheeks and cut the neck to the jawline.

I've had a full mustache and beard since June or so. Plan on keeping it through the winter. One day i just decided to go from just a goatee, to the full beard look and instead of shaving my face, I did my usual headshave, shaved my neck (back and front) and trimmed my goatee down to stubble. Then just went on with my usual weekly shave routine, I just left out shaving my face.

Now I just comb the beard out and trim strays pretty much daily after my shower. I'm really diggin' the bald n' bearded thing. My profile pick is a couple of months old now, so I'll try to get a newer pic taken this weekend and post it.

After about a year of Sly, I started thinking about some facial hair--I had previously had two full beards, one in my twenties and one in my thirties, and a moustache in between.  All lasted about two years.
Although I really like a full beard, I couldn't figure out how to end the beard and begin the shaved head around the ears.  I looked at a lot of beards on beards.org and finally decided initially on a goatee, a full goatee, not a highly carved design because I didn't have the density to support that.
I started four times, each time shaving it off after three to four weeks.  Finally this past February I made a three month commitment.  During that time I decided to extend the goat.  Although I initially used color to mask the grey, I developed a skin reaction and decided to go "natural."  After about four months I started getting a lot of good comments and compliments and that continues to this day.  Like a lot of people, I'm vain enough to get a lift out of that.
That's the history and why of my chin mitten.

I stick with my goat. Had a full beard for about 2 weeks with the bald look but it just wasn't for me.

I might try for the full bearded look.  I always trying different looks.  It was easy when I worked from home due to the transitional phase making me look like a bum.  I had to schedule my new looks with vacation/holidays for the past year, so I didn't get nasty looks from the office folk.  But, now that I have been laid off, I have some time to grow it all out.  Nice thing about a full beard is that its like a blank canvas.  Like my dad always said, you can always cut/sand down the excess but you can add to it.  That was woodworking, but it's the same principle with beards.

I started growing my beard before i went sly.  Never considered shaving it off when i shaved the head.  Just enjoyed the beard too much,  go with whatever you are comfortable with.  You'll get used to it;  I've been sly (with the beard) over a month now and it feels completely natural to me. A little apprehensive at first, it 'grew' on me lol.

I switch back and forth every year. Beard for cold weather, and goatee for warm weather.

I get too itchy with a full beard.

That only lasts for a couple of weeks--but they are the longest weeks you ever live. >:D

I am still tempted to extend mine to a full beard if I could figure out where it ends, but for now I've grown it out to an inch in length at the chin and 1/2" at the tails.  Full is nice, but I'm not sure how my boss will take it--even though the last comment turned out to be a huge punk on me.  I've got to really be able to look "professional' for the sales side of my work, and professional means looking like a lawyer.  Just don't know if it would work--the goat works fine, so I am tempted.

Works with or without glasses. deadohsky's avatar is proof positive that a full beard even without the glasses arms to delineate the end looks kick ass!

As I said, tempted.  May try it out post Christmas to Mardi Gras--when I was thinking of seeing how a regular, but full, goat & stache would work anyway.

Its very nearly a full beard anyway, Saint, but I like the semi-full beard in your avatar best with the bald head.  It's a cool look 8)

Thanks, I do get a lot of compliments--very good for the ego--and that's a really nice thing. :)

I actually can't grow a full beard, so I just rock the goatee 24/7/365.

If I ever shave it off for any reason, (usually a tragic trimmer accident) my reaction is like Rorschach from "Watchmen," MY FAAAACE! GIVE ME BACK MY FAAACE!

I usually keep mine pretty trim, but when the salt starts overwhelming the pepper (like in this pic)

I usually break out the "Just For Men" and color it in a bit to be more like this...

For those who wear contacts or have no glasses, you can always wear sunglasses to determine the cut off point.

Also, I have to say to Bald Bear that you rock the bald and full bearded look whether you are grey or color it.

I used to color my grey facial hair but when my eyebrows started turning grey, I gave up!

Used to alternate between goatee in the summer and full beard in the winter.  Since going SLY, I have tried the full beard for a short time, then a bit less, but neither seemed to do it for me.  So I'm back to the goatee full-time.

I dont' think I could do that - facial hair has been such a part of me for such a long time.  I haven't been completely clean-shaven in over 15 years (before my middle child was born)...

I had it in different shapes at least for 10 years I think. Lately the white became quite noticeably so I thought it's time for a change.

Hey, I resemble that remark! ;D ;D ;D

And that is a reason I sometimes think of a return to Mr. Clean.  My skin reacts badly to JFM otherwise it would be its natural color :D.

Although I love the salt-n-pepper, I sometimes wish that mine would go pure white. But that doesn't seem like it's going to happen anytime soon.

Your beard looks very impressive to me.

My little goatee with its increasing whiteness however seemed like it was trying to become invisible. Now it is!  ;D

Sly with beard..well kinda...more than a chin strap but not a full on beard.  Love having hair on my face too much to get rid of it..I look like Im 12 if I shave it.  I use the ears as a cut off point.  Thought about going back to the goatee but I cant bring myself to get rid of beard...maybe one day.

I enjoy my beard too much to shave it off.So far everybody likes it.I have had a beard for several years now and would feel odd without it now.Maybe if it gets real hot here in western NY this summer I will scale it back to just a goatee.Time and temps will tell.....
