I was absent over the weekend because.....
Sometime between about 10 AM and 12 PM Saturday morning my internet at home went down. As of 4:30 AM this morning it's still down. I was assured by Embarq yesterday morning that I would be up and running by last evening....HAH!!
I couldn't get my SBG fix at all over the weekend and that sucked.
They'll be getting another call from me today............

Whoa, when the IT savey guys have problems, I don't feel so bad when I can't even figure out how to hook up to free Wi-Fi. You guys made my day, I feel a lot better about my "life" on the computer.
-
The Internet is what makes computers so popular. Without the WWW not so popular.
-
You're right Tom. Without the Internet, computers would not be near as useful, pretty boring in fact. I was at the library the other day and they had a used book sale section. They had a good set of encyclopedias for sale for $5. I thought that was hilarious because 20 years ago, they were probably several hundred or more.

Looks like my router went up........ If I disconnect from the router and connect my internet cable directly to the computer I'm back on line...... but of course no wireless connection to the laptop.
I have a Linksys router that is only 14 months old...... I can't believe that it went to Hell already.
Anyone have a suggestion for an inexpensive, reliable router?

That's pretty standard for Linksys from my experience. I use Buffalo routers in my house. I've had one for 4 years now and I've never had an issue. http://www.buffalotech.com/products/wireless/

If it's inside of 5 years there should be a manufacturer's warranty on the sucker. What was the serial on it?

I checked it. It was a seagate drive that came with a dell machine.

I would not recommend Netgear. They are junk. I have had a couple of the cheaper ones at home and some of the higher end units at work an they all need to be rebooted quite often.

I'm going to go with Tyler's suggestion of Buffalo Routers. I did a little research on them and they are apparently top notch.
Does anyone else have one of these and if you do have one did you load 3rd party software (particularly tomato) onto it?
If you did... let me know why and what was involved.

Read this, and if it applies Seagate can unbrick it [free shipping] and recover your data for free.

I never have had to and I have one that is only about a year old (a second router for the other side of my house). I'm thinking that could get kinda messy. :XX

thanks man! O0 i read about firmware issues with the 7200.11, but i have a 7200.10 with 3.ADA firmware. there werent any updates from the seagate site. After trying everything i could, i took the drive apart to see what i could do/see, and i dont think theres much i could have done.... one of the heads were messed up somehow. attached is a picture of the platter. For you guys that dont know, it should look completely unblemished. just shiny. AKA no circles at all.
As far as routers, linksys has a life of about 13-16 months, then they start to crap out. DLink isnt that good. Cisco routers are really good, but expensive. Netgear has its good and bad days...
