I just went through a company failure (due to the economy) and am now re-employed - but at a significantly lower salary than before. I've been wearing a hair piece for the past 10 years and have spent as much as $700 a month just to cover up the top of my head. This website has been a godsend to me. My decision at this point is (a) buy cheaper hair (I'm down to $200/month for hair + $100/month for products and services), (b) get another job to pay for hair, or (c) just get over it and shave my head. Part of me *thinks* that I look better with hair -- but everyone's posts on the message boards makes me think that I'm the only one that thinks that way. But I do need your opinion. I'm attaching a picture with hair and without (I had to do my weekly cleaning tonight). If you were in my shoes -- knowing that my the trade off is having hair = my family having less vs sucking it up and just shaving my head -- what would you do? Society is cruel -- but I think everyone here is saying that nobody has been cruel after shaving.
-
i would say shave it. but that is just me. shaving is a whole lot cheaper and the family could use that money. just my 2cents
-
I'm not trying to sound like a jerk, but you don't have hair. You have a hat.
Your head looks good. Show it to the world.
You will love it.

Well, $700 a month is huge amount of money to be spend on hair... For me monthly 25 euros for a barbershop visit was much. Think about having that much more monthly (shaving stuff reduced say $680).
But this is not about money, is it? It boils down to social pressure. But, as SaintC here and has said, and many other guys too, these are good times to be bald. I can't imagine what the social pressure about having hair has been like in the seventies. Nowadays bald guys are not some freaks, shaved is just a hairstyle among others. I have even noticed that something has happened in the last ten or fifteen years in terms of how bald men are perceived. It's partly the social effect of movies and culture. We see bald actors, musicians, athletes and so on, we see them everywhere. Society may be cruel towards those who are balding (although we have Statham) but it is not so towards those who are shaved bald.
If I were you, I'd grab the opportunity to get the new look Nature is offering you!

You're right, you're the only one who thinks you look better w/ that "hair." Ditch it, it looks like, well let's face it, a dead animal on top of your head. You've got a fine head, cleaned up it makes you look younger, smarter. My educated guess, everyone knows you're "wearing" the minute they meet you. Also, you're going to get a lot of positive feed back in addition to a positive feeling in the bank account. Do it now, don't wait, you'll never reqret it.

I vote to shave it! O0
-
Shave it clean ... You won't regret it.

Dude..... you aready know the answer. Get rid of the rug. Believe me...everyone knows it's a rug. Do you want to be whispered about behind your back as "the guy with the rug" or admired for taking control of your life?
$700 a month or about ten dollars a month for shaving goods? Hmmmm..... I'm not the brightest guy buy even I can see the answer to that one is eay.
Use that money to make the lives of your Family better.................
-
Thanks for the encouragement guys. I'm going to take it off. RE: "wearing a hat" and "dead animal" -- that's exactly what I said when I came back to work with hair the first time -- "Fluffy died and I had to do something with her - so I made this hat." Its coming off!
-
That's a well reasoned approach. Now, when? Today is a fine day to go sly! Don't let the sun set w/o a Dome you can be proud of. Welcome to the freedom--yeah, that's the sensation you'll feel when you dry your newly clean smooth scalp--it's wonderful.
-
Dude, you have "the perfect reason" to shave; do it for the family, and you won't regret it for a moment! You will be so much happier. (Keep in mind that you're doing it for yourself too- for your piece of mind!) It looks great shaved! O0

hmmm, where is my Headblade? :(
:*))
-
::ahem::
DO IIITTTTT. haha
Im sure youll feel like a new man once its all gone.
-
I know you have a $700 a month investment in that thing but throwing it in the trash bin would be an economical move. Forget about the social thing! When people are willing to pay you $700 a month to wear the piece, well...money is money.

Hi Todd,
I'm certain you expected these kind of responses when you posed this question. I know others felt the same way when they shaved their domes for the first time. IT IS TRULY LIBERATING to be free from the worry of having a horseshoe of hair or dealing with some type of hair replacement. And as an added bonus, you'll likely get unsolicited headrubs from the hotties in your life :@` (I'll bet that didn't happen much with the rug ;D).
Also, as Koz said, the fact that the cost of maintaining the rug is too much of a burden is reason enough to go sly. Here's a link to a post I did a while back about the cost of having hair vs. going sly. I know my initial post in this thread doesn't include rugs (I add that later), but you get the point.

Good luck with the initial shave. You'll love it!!

welcome!

Todd, welcome to SBG! Like the others have said, there are many reasons to shave it. Today is Be Bald and Free Day and what a great day to show the world you are bald and free. Go for it! Don't waste any time!
-
Welcome Todd!
Don't waste any time and go sly! It's only a small step to get rid of your concerns about your looks and your money.
I bet you will love that new freedom.
Show Your Dome!
-
Todd, welcome to the forum. Please listen to the guys. They are all 100% correct-lose the rug! Did you look at your own pictures? The Sly guy must be 10 years younger and better looking to boot. That guy with the rug reminds me of Baluchi's (According to Jim) brother-in-law. You and I know, we only need one of those! lol
-
Dude, shave your head, that money could be spent much better elsewhere. Or even invested.
-
Run, don't walk to get your razor. I wore a piece for almost 30 years. I just pasted my 1 year anniversary of being sly Oct. 12th. I regret not doing it sooner. The time and money spent I will never get back. But shaving was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. This web site had a lot to do with me going through with it. So trust these guys and do it. You will be happy you did.
-
What all the bro's say is very true Todd. Really, freedom awaits you once you toss that dead hair hat aside. You will see.
That money can be well spent on many other things, number one being your family.
Keep us posted on your progress. O0

If you were in my shoes --
hey todd: 1st of all welcome 2 the sly fraternity. glad that ya found us. 2 answer your question..."if you were in my shoes".... if i was in your shoes, i would buy a quality razor like the magnum M5, fusion, mach3, or headblade and "do the deed", "take the plunge", & in layman's terms... shave that dome. keep us posted 2 your road 2 slyness & give us the reactions of your new look. This post reminds me of the Snickers commercial awhile back where the bald office worker was wearing a toupee made of snickers bars and everyone was laughing at him behind his back because they knew it wasn't real hair.

T-minus 1 week and counting. I don't know why but I set "Black Friday" as the "just do it" day. Thanks to everyone for your encouragement and stories. Hearing all of the positive results of going SLY definitely pushed me over the edge. I have the head slick, Fusion, Mach, and soon a head blade ready to go. I also sprouted a goatee.
My new mantra -- "shut up and evolve!" Pictures next week.

In the words made famous by Larry the Cable Guy....
Git-R-Done!
Good for you. O0 And welcome to the forum Todd! O:O

If you were in my shoes -- knowing that my the trade off is having hair = my family having less vs sucking it up and just shaving my head -- what would you do?
This is kind of a loaded question considering the venue in which it was asked. We are THE
SLY BALD GUYS
And we F^@&ing Rule!
That being said, with hair you look like just another guy who is not particularly happy. Without hair you look like Vic Mackey (AKA Michael Chikliss) of "The Shield", one kickass no nonsense dude.
$700 a month to cover up that dome? :o
If your wife told you that she spends $700 a month on makeup what would be your reaction?
You, mi hermano, have fallen prey to the insecurity/self-loathing industry in America and they make zillions a year creating what some people think is the ideal physical specimen to a) envy and b) hate themselves because they aren't it. I got some news.....nobody is IT!
I say scrape it clean, F^@& the self-hate! You can always go back to the rug.
-
Way to go! Now that you've made your decision.... FREEDOM is at your door step!
Post up some photos...... I would recommend NOT using the HeadBlade for that first shave or two. It can take a little getting used to.... as will the act of shaving your head. Plus... a cut with the HB can be nasty and may make you NOT to want to shave again.
Go slow my friend....
Good luck and congrats!!!

Thanks for all the words of encouragement. I think I'm going to go to an old fashioned barbershop on Friday and have them take it down to zero. I'm so ready to get the dead animal off my head. Everyone's right -- it looks like a dead animal on my head -- what was I thinking.
I do have a question -- I still have a tanline from summer (yes you can get a tan in Oregon -- especially when you go to Hawaii in August). Do self tanners work as well on scalp as they do your face?
Thanks again to everyone on the forum -- you helped me man-up -- ready to take care of business.

I wouldn't even worry about the tan line. Your dome will tan up fast enough. After all, this is about getting natural. And stay out of the tanning beds. There are some horror stories in this forum about skin cancer and the tanning beds don't just speed up the tan.

Then you're going home and take a good hot shower, lather and shave it smooth, right???? Take your time, you'll have your technique down shortly. Enjoy. O0 O:O

I have my fusion out of the package ready to do the deed.

You're the man, and are you ever going to enjoy the freedom.

Thanks to all of my sly brothers I took step 1 today and ditched the dead animal! I have to be honest and tell everyone that without your encouragement I couldn't have done it -- and that is straight from the heart. My barber said "let's do 3/32" first and see how you like it" -- but I'm ready to do it all the way. Here's what 3/32" looks. Question -- should I buzz it with clippers or just jump in the shower and use the razor?

If it were me, I'd buzz w/o a guard, then shower and shave--it's still kind of long. You've got a good goat going so you probably have a clipper already. Take it slow, really get that scalp soaked, then lather and new blade. You're really going to get a rush of freedom, and then keep it thirty days--Sly Life is Free Life.
-
Go all the way! But like Saint said, use the clippers to get your hair shorter first.
