Title: The Unofficial 2009 Coffee poll.......
Post by: Mikekoz13 on October 11, 2009, 07:11:49 AM
I'm a relatively new coffee drinker. I just started drinking coffee last Spring. I hate to admit but I'm a bit of a coffee snob. I've tried the regular store brands and they are just not very good to me. I buy mine from a Coffee Roaster and have it ground.

I've tried a lot of good coffees but my absolute favorite is a Kona blend that my roaster makes. He blends 1/3 Kona with other high quality beans. It's called the "Ultimate blend". I'm drinking a cup right now. MMMM!!!!!!!

So what's your favorite Cup O' Joe and why?

My favorite at the moment is Dark Roast Organic Guatemala from Spike's in San Francsico.

http://www.spikescoffee.com/

I got addicted to this coffee last fall when we were there on vacation.  Spike's is the same coffee shop location that was there when I lived in San Francisco twenty years ago.  It was called Java Road then.

I've been a coffee drinker since I was five years old.  No kidding.  We start our habits young in the south.  Nothing like a good cup of coffee and a cigarette before toddling off to kindergarden.  JK about the cigarette.  :*))

Cafe du Monde, dark roast with chicory--we cold drip it, then mix that concentrate w/ milk and nuke it.  Best cafe au lait you can have, imo.  Otherwise, I'll use an Italian canned 100% arabica bean expresso, and make a double shot latte--we got an expresso machine years ago as a gift.  Outside New Orleans, double shot latte.  The old expression, translated from French, says that coffee should be hot as hell, black as the devil, and sweet as love.

Coffee is my hobby, oddly enough ...

I have a small commercial roaster (want a bigger one) and roast my own beans once a week.  I usually have about 40-50 lbs of green beans on hand.  My favorites are Sumatra, Indonesian, Kenya, Bolivian, Mexican, and Columnbian.  At the moment I have 4 different kinds of Columbian. My overall favorite is Columbian from one specific farm.

I roast some espresso blends and make Americanos and Lattes, both iced and hot.  I brew everything else via drip or press pot.

I've modifed most of my equipment (roaster, grinder, and brewing machines) to suit my needs better.  Yes, I have coffee issues but my friends and family benefit ....

Well, I'm addicted  :XX  and it's easy to quit; I've done it many times!  :*))
Some days, I just have to have coffee- any coffee!   :Xo!  Usually, I'll get heard saying "just give some coffee, and nobody will get hurt"   :o
Other days, especially on a day off, if I've slept in and don't care to wake up, I might not even drink any that day (blasphemy!)   :*)) O0
Given this range, I've had most everything from gourmet to whatever the coffee club drinks at work!   :XX
There are some great coffee flavors out there, and if you're a coffee drinker, I encourage you to try them all- from coffee in foreign countries (my favs so far have been Jamaica and Germany) to some of the unique American flavors (fresh New Orleans with Chickory...and a local pastry!).   :@`
Drink on my friends, drink on! O0

The pastry you refer to are beignets--square fried squares of yeast dough, sweetened w/ powdered sugar just after being cooked, sort of like a square donut--always eaten hot, generally w/ cafe au lait.  C'est si bien! O0

I don't have one specific coffee that I buy -- I like to rotate around lots of different varietals. But I always buy whole bean and grind it myself just before brewing -- with a French Press, of course.

You're a real afficiando of the bean, interesting article on the French Press at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_press

I use Eight O'Clock Whole Bean for daily drinking... with just a touch of sugar and 1/2 and 1/2.  Been drinking it for years and use a Grind and Brew coffee maker.  Also, CR rated Eight O'Clock as their top rated retail coffee (whole bean, normal availability - not the imported stuff)

My other favorites are Kona (nothing against blends, but 100% will blow your socks off).  I pick it up when I'm in Hawaii or order it online...

Cafe Du Mode comes in a close second... nothing like a nice piping hot Cafe Au Lait and a plate full of Beneigts!!  Best hangover cure in the world and is much needed when visiting the Big Easy!

I've only had Jamaican Blue Mountain once, but WOW!!

Community Coffee is another Louisiana company with a great product.  Unfortunately their venture into coffee houses was not successful.  Most coffee beans, wherever they're from are imported as green beans through the Port of New Orleans for all US brands.

Ohhh boy! I absolutely LOVE coffee :@`  The house brew around here is Maxwell House (dark roast- I like my coffee strong!), but we also buy some of the more exotic whole bean coffee's for "treats." My wife came back from Seattle with a couple of interesting bags  - one called "Dead Man's Reach" and the other, I kid you not, was "Three Peckered Billy Goat." :D

I'll drink hot coffee, and I may be one of the few left who likes iced coffee. I'll add some milk, sugar, and ice - and drink it cold, too. I just plain love coffee  O:O

Surprising there's so many Maxwell House fans here...that barely warrants shelf space in the stores here...and some of the other brands (Eight O'Clock & Chock Full of Nuts??) aren't even available in our area.

Down Under we have slightly different brands. We have Starbucks off course, but I'm not a fan.
I generally buy ground Organic East Timor (Fair Trade) coffee and it is great. Otherwise we have all the other brands such as Illy, Segafredo, Vittoria, Lavazza and so on. A really great coffee is from discount German Supermarket Aldi, their ground coffee is a great quality and really reasonably priced. I have an espresso machine and I go through about 6 cups a day. Don't sleep much but who cares.

Now this is my kinda subject Koz, lol. Big time cofee drinker here. Gotta run, will fill in later.

Ok, I'm back and down to business. My favorite coffee, and one I grew up on was Eight O' Clock Coffee. It still is one of my faves, along with Dunkin' Donuts Coffee.
Those are my two "go to" coffee's. I haven't had Maxwell House in quite some time, but I do enjoy it. Chock Full is also good.
I discovered two great coffee's last year that we did not get on the East coast, one is Seattle's Best and the other is Tully's. Both have a good selection and variety, and I really enjoy the Seattle's Best choices. I will pick them up when on sale.

Right now I am using a Kroger brand (special roast) and it's not too good, you can tell by the smell and aftertaste. yech. It was cheapest, and of course you get what you pay for, lol. I will not buy it again.

My taste in coffee sounds eerily similar to SaintC's.  I use Cafe Du Monde when I can get some from a visit to NOLA, or from a family member.  There's a brand of chicory coffee from Houston that I can get local in Texas too.
Some finely ground italian espresso beans for my italian coffee maker.  And anything else that looks good on the shelf of my local grocery store.

I'm like a pothead (who would use a joint, bong or a pipe), but for coffee.   I have a french press, an Italian stove coffee burner for the stove, an Arabic coffee maker and a coffee cloth from Ecuador.  I threw out my drip coffee maker with the last move.
I'm a coffee freak.

The next step is to start roasting ....    Brewing/grinding equipment is very important, but using freshly roasted beans (within the last 10 days) has a giant effect.

Just a pointer for you guys who want to try "chicory" coffee.  All the local producers, Cafe du Monde, aka CDM, French Market, Community Coffee, make several types, so be sure when you're ordering to ask for "dark roast with chicory".  Contrary to some misunderstandings, the chicory is actually the "sweet" part of the taste-and counterbalances the effects of dark roasting the beans before grinding.  It's a great way to drink coffee.

Grind my own beans every morning -- usually get whatever is available at Sam's - sometimes it's Millstone, sometimes it's a generic (Fair Trade or something like that).  Sometimes I get Wal-mart's 'Java Paradise' brand.  I ususally choose either Colombian or French Roast 'flavors.'  I too have learned to like iced coffee this year.  I always thought it sounded nasty, but no longer.  How I like it is quite simple... crushed ice from my refrigerator, add the coffee, and then add the Coffee-mate refrigerated flavoring such as Hazelnut, French Vanilla -- way cheaper than buying it and just as good.  I find that I drink iced coffee very slowly.  When i drink it hot, it has to be HOT.

Andrew:  Yes, I know I will eventually start roasting and grinding my own beans for ultimate flavor.

SaintC:  I haven't been to Central Markup in awhile (until I get that six figure lawyer job, lol), but I have heard it's available there.  I'll hit it up soon.

PapaDon:
The italian "espresso" burners aren't too different from percolators, either way it's better than drinking it from a drip maker.  I think the paper filter takes out alot of that oil from the coffee beans and zaps it of flavor.
If you can see those little swirls of oil at the top of your cup, you know it won't give you the taste and jolt you need.

I read something online that rated 8 o'clock as the top whole bean coffee.  It beat out a lot of expensive brands and is really cheap here. I've been buying the 100% columbian and like it a lot better than the $14 a pound stuff I was buying. Use the french press.

Can't believe people have a hard time finding Cafe du Monde. That stuff is in every store in Kansas City. They even sell the beignet mix at most large grocery stores.

I'm an energy drink addict.   I get hassled by the coffee drinkers at work, when they see me plop down my big can of Monster, NOS, or Starbucks energy drink.   Never got into coffee other than the coffee flavored energy drinks.  If I can't get to a store, I find coffee is a good caffiene vehicle for those times when I get a headache from the lack of vitamin C, (caffiene).  In fact, I think it has more caffiene then most energy drinks.
