Title: The Weather
Post by: schro on October 01, 2009, 07:43:53 AM
OK, we all have our preferences, and we have have our gripes. But why don't you share with the board what it's like in your world today. Also, how was the weather for you this year?

For us, we had a pretty odd summer, but overall fairly cool. We usually have a few spells of triple digits. We really had a pretty mild July and August. However, this past weekend, it was unseasonably hot with 3 straight days above 105. Then this Monday, it dropped 25 degrees to 80. It was like the thermometer dropped off a cliff. That rarely happens in Nor Cal.

I love the heat but for me, I like the evenings to be cool (which is why I couldn't live in the desert). As much as I love the heat, I'm looking forward to the fall. This week, it's low-80s and gorgeous.

So, what's up in your part of the world?

Weather here in Seattle seems like the fall normal right now.  But I hear that this will be a El Nino year.  So that would be drier and warmer than normal.  But last winter we had a ton of snow.  Seattle very seldom gets a White Christmas.  But I saw one for the second time in my life.  I have to say that I did enjoy that.  This past summer was also one of the nicest and driest.  While it was interesting to be here for our record breaking 103 degrees in July, that is something I would rather not see repeated!

It's cooling as usual, just in time for Balloon Fiesta. Cool mornings, maybe a little light breeze and sometimes windy afternoons.

We also had a below average temperature Summer here in PA.. It was pretty mild most of the Summer...... we didn't even run the air conditioner until August.

It seems to me that it is cooling off a few weeks earlier than usual here. The temperatures we've had the last couple of weeks are more like mid October temps.

The Almanac is calling for a VERY cold and snowy winter in our parts.........

We had cool and rainy Summer in Connecticut.  I've that due to El Nino patterns they're 70-75% certain that we'll have an unusually cold and snowy Winter.  I welcome that having just bought a new snowblower.  It's usually the opposite - buy a new slowblower and we have a mild winter.

Southern Ontario Canada,  we had rain, rain and rain in the summer.
Well not always rain but yeah unexpected rain.  Kind of killed the mood.
I am not a big fan of summer anyway.  I love spring.   I love Fall because
I get to sleep more at night.    :popo

Today is overcast and in the 80's. For us, that's cool weather.

Central Texas had a torrid summer. We had over 60 days of 100+ temps and were just one day shy of breaking the record for over-100 days set in 1925.

We are also in what is termed an "exceptional drought", the most severe on the scale.

Luckily, the shifting El Nino pattern is expected to bring a wetter-than-normal winter, so maybe we can make up some of our water deficit.

It really is amazing how large Texas is....just try driving from border to border.  In the Dallas area, today is 80 with a chance of rain.  The summer was hot, just like normal, but not as many 100+ days as other years.  It was a very wet summer in our part of Texas.  I know BootedBear could have used some of the rain.

The summer here on the dry side of Washington was very odd. We had a super hot spell in early spring then it dropped back to normal temps and stayed cool til mid June then all of a sudden it jumped like 20 degrees and was blazing hot just in time for summer to start. We had more rain than usual, the temps in the last month have been crazy, one day it will be 89 then drop down to the 50's. The last winter was bad, we had over 4' of snow at one time and I hear that we should have a warmer winter this year.

You said it. I used to fly a route that took me from Houston to El Paso. You would start out at night with lights everywhere and then they would get less and less and less and gone. Maybe a light way off to the right or left but mostly just black. Welcome to West Texas. Dang you guys have one huge state.

Unusually cool summer in MS this year.  Maybe one day over 100 and a few nights in July and August that were in the upper 50's.  Typically, we never get below 75 at night from June-mid Sept.  Speaking of Sept, it's usually dry - 2" of rain on average.  Last Saturday ended 16 days in a row of rain with 10.58" in those days.

Currently beautiful!  Upper 40's at night, low 70's during the days.

I confirm what the Bear has posted.  This has been the hottest summer I have experienced in my entire life.  And I've lived in the South all my life (Southern Louisiana, Mississippi, and the Atlanta area included).

It has only cooled down in the last few weeks and we have been getting rain. (just in time for the huge "Austin City Limits" music festival to be turned into a mudfest).

Snowed here too yesterday but it melted as it hit the ground...the high temp yesterday was 32.  The average temp for yesterday is 62...and the record temp for yesterday was 87.  Our leaves didn't turn color at all this year...they just froze and fell off the trees while they were still green.  Never seen anything like it.

Believe it or not, it's been right around 60 here for the last 2 days. There was a mist of rain last night but it was bright and sunny today. Additionally, all of the leaves are falling off the trees here. In the past 2 days they have gone from being beautiful in color to completely bare. Go figure.

I wonder if it'll rain on Halloween...like it always does? :Xo!

Yeah, I think that's the same system that's coming up from the Gulf after raining heavily here tomorrow.  I flew through the last one Friday coming back to NO from Atlanta, it was the longest and roughest flight in a long time, even the cabin attendants stayed belted in for the entire ride.  It was like a Jeep on a logging road.  I've had rougher, but not as long a consistently rough and bouncy ride.  There's pretty good information at wunderground.com, we use that site for tropical information a lot--much more detail than the weather.com site.

Today was a balmy 65 degrees (maybe 66) and a few thin high level clouds.  I have a 3 year old snowblower that gets used about once or twice every few years, usually in March or April during the "wet" season.  My snow blower looks brand new!  I think we're due (overdue) for some late season "climate change".  Maybe this winter... Down state Illinois here.  Cold, and Windy, where you see the same snow 2 or 3 times very often.  No snow fences from the (broke) State of Illinois.  So many roads can't even be seen when the wind is blowing, but the sun and blue sky can be seen above.   But they can find the $$ to pay the over time to the persons that drive those snowplows.   They were out, in force, this last Sunday.  And the troopers, sheriff's deputy's, all have to be out there, in it.
But February comes,  Warm sun,  warm sand, Cold beer,  tank tops and shorts.  Just a perfect time not to be in Illinois.

After 40 New England winters, I didn't want a 41st, so that's when I moved down here to central TX.

But to be honest, it's not the cold I was fleeing from -- I could care less how cold it got -- it was the snow.

I could never move back to the Snow Belt now.

I hope this is the pace of snow here...minimal impact over the next few months would be great!!!

It's snowing here now..... only an inch or two but that is the worst because everything gets slick. Nothing of "Metrodome" proportions yet this year.

73 degrees, sun--tough, but no reports of problems with the Superdome roof though.   ;D

A drop to the mid-fifties by Saturday expected with lows in the low 40s, high 30's.  Gentlemen this is tough duty but someone has to do it.   :D

Remember these days later this year in July when it's 100 degrees and about 400% humiditry down there. I experienced it!!

Oh yeah, it's my mantra in August--but then those "balmy" summer days are a very good reason for an Abita Amber------------------or two. `Dr!n# `Dr!n#

I don't know where is worse in August: Miami, N'Orleans or Houston. I've done all 3 and it sure gets miserable.

Gonna be wet out here in NorCal for the next week or so.
We are WAY above normal rain & snow levels and it has been below normal temps .... yep, sounds like Global Warming to me.  :/O

It just keeps raining and raining. I already feel water logged. But I have to say that the snow in Tahoe is sure fun to play in. ;D

It hasn't been over 25 degrees here in days. The last two nights have been under 10 degrees.

Only about 8-10 weeks until motorcycle weather begins!!!!!

I used to live in Miami. There used to be 1 or 2 days a year below 40. Seriously the whole rest of the country would be covered in sno and in Miami we'd be at the beach. If this job market ever gets any better I'd really like to move back. You all should consider it. Or NO is not a bad choice either.

It's been below 0 degrees Fahrenheit at night and single digits or in the teens during the day for the past couple of days....HATE it... I wish I lived in FL, SC, NC... anywhere warm.. Retired last year with plans to move down south, but due to the housing market, and now being upside down on a mortgage, I'm stuck up here until things change a bit.... (Putnam New York)

I have the fireplace going strong, furnace blaring and it's still cold.....

I found that my family room is warmer if I place an inch thick piece of insulating styrofoam in the top of my fireplace opening- just below the flue.  It cuts down on the draft dramatically.  So instead of a roaring fire, I'm snug as a bug for now.  Of course if the furnace were to go out, I'd be the first one looking for the butane lighter...and removing the piece of styrofoam. 8)  Maybe I should attach a red flag to the piece of styrofoam "remove before use" just in case?  ;)

-6 with a windchill of -25 this morning.

TOO F*ING COLD!!!

Makes me wish I could sprout a bit more fur... or at least be allowed to hibernate until March.

Currently 43f and overcast in Portland, Oregon. Been an unusually warm "winter" here. Expected high of 52f, low of 37f tonight. No snow this year, some rain, but not much. Weird year.

I'm also in Portland.  For all the hoopla about this being a La Nina winter or whatever they're calling it, it hasn't amounted to much.  Although I like our occasional snowstorms, I am more and more content to see snow in other places on TV and not have to deal with it here.

Two years ago, when we had the last La Nina winter, it was actually pretty cold here in Seattle with about 2 weeks of snow.  But I will say that while we have had some warm and sunny days this winter, it has not been nearly as warm and dry as last winter when it was a El Nino.

We had our coldest December for 25 years when the whole country ground to a halt. Temperature dropped as low as -28 at Altnaharra.

I won't comment on Global Warming (that's a HOT topic) ...

But, I've been in Florida 30 years and this summer seems among the warmest (and unrelenting) that I can recall.

Pass me another ice cold beer please.

We cooled DOWN to the mid 80's yesterday. I remember really hot Summers like this back when I was a kid but none really during my adult life.
It's just the earth's natural cycle... IMO.

In Oregon, we have had a cooler than normal summer;  we haven't reached 90° yet, although some hot days are forecast this weekend.  July was slightly dryer than normal but we are way (11 inches) over for rain this calendar year.  If anyone is interested more details are available at my webpage www.canbyweather.com (http://www.canbyweather.com)

In Croatia -Slavonia -almost no rain for about three months, last month  hotter then average with max 43C and min 24C talk about extreme weather, corn is R.I.P,Sun flower R.I.P elemental disaster as always IS declared and this month is jet to be seen :) ...global worming my pants  ;D I don't buy that explanations and theories noting is as simple as it looks  -for an example global worming will trigger global cooling(when melting Poles you get fresh cold water that floats over salty ocean water so the current changes his course or stops entirely ) by stopping warm gulfs current - our  Europe will be a little different  place :D but for now interesting stuff -moderate warm Adriatic see last month was 30 C warm and some strange tropical fish are not so unusual there any more

I agree. The earth has been through so many climate changes in it's multi-billion year history...  It will never stay the same forever. What's been going on with the weather lately is nothing. Does an ice age count as "global cooling"?  :P

It has been warmer and drier than usual here in the northern Chicago area, too. We have finally been getting some rain the last few weeks, but we still need a lot more!

Thing is that our climate (relatively stable climate, our comfort zone  )is in fact a fluke ,freak of the nature in the other words nature has been too kind towards us ,weather on earth is in fact moody, unstable and we already had long run with merciful(less or more )but kind weather and in what mood the Earth is now I think we will found out faster then we think -'evil' Earth has already show us just a tiny part of her power

It's true. We are incredibly lucky to have had it so good, climate-wise.
Yep, we've only been shown a hair of what the forces of nature can do. There have been asteroid impacts; super volcano eruptions, and so on in the Earth's past that have eradicated entire species, and have almost instantly changed the climate.
Even worse things than those can happen at any moment, given the unstable forces/nature of the universe. Gotta love this crazy existence of ours!  :D
