OK, a topic near & dear to all (or most) of our hearts....BEER. `Dr!n#
Last week, I was down in San Diego (love the city, hate the football team) and was killing time at the airport bar before my flight to come home. I decided to try a local beer from the Karl Strauss Brewing Company http://www.karlstrauss.com/index.html .
I had their Red Trolley Ale and I have to admit, it was one of the best tasting beers I've ever had (must have been a Raider fan that came up with the ingredient mix). I know we all have breweries we've stumbled upon that we've really liked in all our travels, so why don't y'all share a few.
-
Karl Strauss is good stuff. California is great for micronized breweries, Gordon Biersch started right down the street from my house and I love there blond bach and Czech lager , Tied house in Mtn View, lost coast brewery up in Humboldt they make "Great White" which is awesome.
-
Some of my favorites are:
Left-hand Brewing's Milk Stout
Deschuttes Black Butte Porter
Lost Cost Brewery's Downtown Brown

There used to be a Tied House in my hometown (Alameda) and I went there often while I lived there. They do have excellent beer also.
When the SBG's got together here in the Bay Area, we assembled at the Triple Rock Brewery (Berkeley) and Buffalo Bills (Hayward). Both places have great beer.

Of course Abita, for me either Amber or TurboDog, but they are now distributing fairly widely. NOLA Brew is another. I think our old standby, Dixie, now being brewed by contract since Katrina and vandals ruined their brewery, may not have long--it's a shame. We have a couple of micro-brewery restaurants too, and they can have some interesting stuff--and it's totally fresh, a big plus.
Unless I can get one of the locals, I have moved away from beer. By local, I mean a local brewery anywhere I'm at. The national brands really leave me cold--by trying to please everyone, it's developed into a rush to the bottom of the barrel, taste wise. Maybe I'm a beer snob, but for me to accept the calories and salt content inherent in beer, I want some real flavor to make it worth while.

Living in Pa. I'm a little partial to the Yuengling Brand... they have some nice beers. Rolling Rock is still pretty good for a hot Summer day cool down.
Fo rme though, when I want to TRULY enjoy a beer, a go to my favorite Irish Pub in Gettysburg and have a couple of pints of Guinness. They serve it at exactly the right temperature and know how to draw it from the tap perfectly.
MMMMMMMMM. `Dr!n# `Dr!n# `Dr!n#

In and around Austin there are several good regional breweries. There is the Real Ale brewery in Blanco, TX that makes probably the most popular local beer, Fireman's #4. Fireman's is a smooth blond style beer. There are also the Live Oak and "512" Breweries which both make many and good beers.
There are also countless brewpubs which have four or five of their own beers on tap, the two of which I go to the most are NXNW and Draughthouse Pub.
It ain't Belgium or Colorado, but it's a good place for beer.

When in Nova Scotia, one drinks Keith's. "Those who like it, like it a lot" O0

I think they have been making it in Ireland for 2 or 3 hundred years. Definitely an acquired taste.

In Minocqua, WI there is a place called The Minocqua Brewing Company. Basically a restaurant that has a pretty sophisticated looking brewery on the premises. All their beers are pretty good but two that I am particularly fond of are Road Kill Red and Pudgy Possum Porter. The porter is a really nice smooth dark brew. The best thing about these two is the alcohol content: somewhere in the neighborhood of 10%.
A buddy of mine and his wife took a trip to Arizona a couple of years ago and he brought me back a six pack of something called Chili Beer. There is a whole hot pepper in each bottle. The funny thing is that you can eat the pepper and apparently the process of soaking in beer somewhat cuts the fire but, and this is a BIG BUT, when you drink the beer you get the full force of the oleoresin capsicum. The beer itself caused my forehead to start sweating. In spite of that it is the most inventive and one of the most delicious beers it has ever been my pleasure to throw up from. Even tastes good on the way out.

I drank Yuengling's Black & Tan almost exclusively when I went back to visit my brother in law in Maryland back in 2007. That's a GREAT beer.

Yuengling is the oldest American brewery in is located in my great state of Pennsylvania.... just a couple of hours up the road from me.
Click here for more info.......... http://www.yuengling.com/index.htm
By the way..... the Black and Tan (though not a true B&T) is awesome and the Porter is just as good. If you can get them on tap......that's great beer!

Some of my favorites are:
Left-hand Brewing's Milk Stout
Deschuttes Black Butte Porter
Lost Cost Brewery's Downtown Brown
Deschuttes is good

If you go to World Market, they sometimes have a brazilian black beer called Xingu (sheen-goo). Its really good.
But its not good at all with Cheez-its. Im just sayin'.
-
This one is quite local to me (less than ten miles off), and the beer is perfectly acceptable, but it does not really stand out from the crowd of other beers of the same type. It is, however, a rival to Sam Adams, and goes for about the same price:
http://www.bluepointbrewing.com/main_shell.html
The site comes with annoying sound added, but you can turn the speaker off.
Alas, I can't even enjoy any beer at the moment, having had a tooth extracted (first one since childhood) and the doc says, "Nothing carbonated" for at least two days (disturbs the clotting). But apparently wine is OK, so I've some cabernet-shiraz (Australian) that will have to serve.
-
My favorite beer of all time, Shiner Bock, is right down the road from me in Shiner, TX.
Mentioned before was Firemans 4 which is good
i think there was another place in austin called Uncle billys or willys or something that had a great agave wheat beer that my friend said was just incredible.
-
Yeungling is good. we recently started getting it down here in the south. I love it.
Dog Fish Head is pretty good. Has a real rich taste.
-
I hear a lot about Dog Fish Head, though when I tried it I wasn't impressed at all.
-
Yuengling Black and Tan. Not bad.
-
Being from PA, I gotta say Yuengling...Lager obviously, and I do like Black and Tan in the winter months.
Lancaster brewing company has a good milk stout
and I also wanna give recognition to Lion's Head, even tho it is no longer ten dollars a case

The craft beer scene IS the beer scene here in the PNW and with 22 Breweries producing over 70 varieties of beer in Portland alone, and countless others more all over Oregon I don't even know where to begin... but some personal faves are:
Dead Guy by Rogue Ales is a strong fantastic Maibock made with a proprietary yeast, giving it a unique flavor. It also makes a great a breat bottom to a Half & Half with Guinness. Many of Rogues Ales are really above average including their Brutal Bitter, Honey Cream Ale and Kells Irish Lager.
McMenamins also has a great line up of beers Including their Ruby (Rasberry Wheat Ale), Terminator Stout (Which when mixed 50/50 with the Ruby makes the lovely Rubinator), Working Mans Red and Chocolate Cream Stout.
Deschutes, Bridgeport and MacTarnahans are all amazing breweries with strong rosters as well. They all have their standards and then release seasonals (darker in the winter to lighter in the summer) as well as small batch and limited editions.
Like I said, their are just too many to list. But you can find them all at http://www.portlandbeer.org and some of them even ship out of state if you're interested.

I agree Tyler.... I believe that their brews are way over rated.
-
i had new belgian's -2* tuesday night. it was pretty damn good. i love that brewery. just can't get it here. have to have it brought to us when my buddy comes from texas.
-
There are a few local breweries that I have heard make some great stuff. One of my favorites is the Slammin Amber Ale. It's made exclusively for our AAA ball club the Isotopes. Just too damn expensive at the ball park.
-
I admit I've stumbled after too many beers, local and otherwise, but my fav is Abita, particularly Turbo Dog, and their draft Amber is a good reliable brew.

OK.... I'm going to put this out there.... During the month of December, any SBG's in the southern Pa. area or just south of me in Maryland will be my guest at the tasting of some different Yuengling's if you want to get together.
So if you're coming into the area during the Holidays, PM me if you want and we'll meet up for a few.... my treat.
This offer is open to the couple of guys that I kkow live just over the mountain from me that I've yet to meet.

We have a very nice local " Mickey Finn's Brewery "
http://www.mickeyfinnsbrewery.com/ (http://www.mickeyfinnsbrewery.com/)
I'm a "GUINNESS"/"HARP" man , so usually drink a pint of "Hackett Irish Stout" or "Bill's Oatmeal Stout" :D

It's hard to believe just how many brands of beer there are in the entire world. And I thought wines were bad.

One of the best beers I have run into here in southeastern Michigan is Sven & Ollie's IPA. It is brewed in 5 barrel batches by Scott Morton at Lilly's Seafood Restaurant in Royal Oak.
http://www.lilysseafood.com/brewery.htm (http://www.lilysseafood.com/brewery.htm)
I get 2 growlers of the stuff every Wednesday for $4 each. Tasty. :@`

It's pretty chewy. The IPA and Stout make a great Black & Tan! The River Red is nice too.

I work in a place that specializes in GOOD beer and there are too many GOOD beers to consider just a few. O0
Some of my favorites are, Rogue Dead Guy,Tilburgs Dutch brown Ale, any of the Abita's we carry, Samual Smith's Nut Brown Ale, and my new favorite is Trippel Karmeliet, just to name a few :*))
It really sucks to get paid to drink beer O0 :*))
-
Ty some of the Dogfish Head beers aren't that bad, but I can't say I'm a big fan. They do make some very interesting beer though. They have a team of archeologist that dig up ancient beer recipes and they recreate them, kinda of gets interesting some times.
-
Real Ale Coffee Porter (brewed in Blanco, TX, near Austin). Had a pint last night and it is really good stuff, I'm gonna try to grab a sixer of it today if I can find some.

I like that Rogue Dead Guy. If I have to drink something out of a bottle, that's the one I prefer. O0

Straub beer brewed in St marys PA. Has a big following in this area.
-
Came across a really good Amber brew that is local. It's Marble Amber Ale, made by the marble brewery right her in Burque. It's some really good stuff. Ordered a Fat Tire, since they were out the waitress suggested the Marble. I had heard good things about it, but never tried it. Two thumbs up!
-
I Like Beer, it makes me a jolly good fellow ---- Well, you get the idea.
Sorry, but all those fancy names don't register with a, a, um, a, well, a redneck.
If its in a bottle, or can, or a cold frosted mug, and served across a bar, I'm your guy.
So, best not say which one that might be, ya wouldn't agree anyway.
But it starts with a K, and it isn't one of those funny named beers.
So, time for another round, who's turn is it to buy?

I feel bad for you, my brother. It sounds like you could use some help.....where do I sign up?
