Title: I met a kind old Man and his Wife......
Post by: Mikekoz13 on August 10, 2009, 06:21:32 AM
This happened to me last Friday AM...... and for some reason has really stuck with me the past few days.

I was rushing around town early Friday AM doing some last minute things before we left at noon for our camping trip. There was a belt chirping on the Suburban so i decided to run ito the dollar store to see if they had a can of belt dressing.

As I got to the door of the store I noticed a very old couple getting out of their car that was parked in the handicapped spot. So I slowed and then stopped and watched as the old man (had to be at LEAST 85 years old) slowly made his way around the car to help his wife get out of the car. The lady, about as old as the man, had a cane to help her walk.
He gently helped her out of the car and up the slight incline to the sidewalk and then held her hand as they shuffled towrd the door of the store. When they got close enough I opened the door of the store and the lady looked up at me and said "Go right ahead" so that I would go in. I responded, "Oh I'm not in any hurry, take your time, I've got the door for you". She passed by me with a very nice smile and then the man went to grab the door from me and motioned for me to go in.
I said, "Oh no..... today the door gets held for you too!" with a big laugh. He stopped in front of me and his wife said, "What a nice young man." He smiled a smile that I can imagine was on the end of a lot of mischief years ago and said, "Thank you so much, we need more young men like you".
I thanked him and remarked that I tried to do something nice for a stranger everyday. He told me that "today you get two!" And then he roared with laughter that I couldn't believe came out of that frail body. I roared right along with him.

As the door was closing I heard his wife say, "That made my day!". What she didn't know was that they had made my day.

Random Acts of Kindness guys...... I've written about them before. Do them and they will brighten your day and you'll be a better Man for it.

I think the reason this stuck with me is the way that frail man so lovingly helped his wife of what I can only imagine is many, many years. So
gentle and with great Love........

Definitely a "Pay It Forward" type of thing.
Well done.

Now, if you'd only appreciate the melodic wonders of Jimmy Buffett, you'd truly be a decent human being!

It sure makes you feel good, when others feel so much better by your acts of kindness.

I've done that at coffee shop and McDonald's drive thrus before.  If someone is nice enough to allow me in when they could have easily cut me off, I end up in front of them in line and pay for their order.  Puts a smile on your face all day.

Great story.  We need more people in life like these folks - the old folks who still care for them and Mike, who still respects his elders.  Something to be proud of and something our younger generation needs more schooling in.

Yeaah...  the gleam in that old man's eye and the roaring laugh told me he was probably quite a character in his day. i would love to have a cup of coffee with them and just talk.

Hey Mike,

Great story my friend. When I read that I was reminded of a quote by spiritual teacher (and a sly bald guy in his own right) Dr. Wayne Dyer on the subject of The Law of Attraction.

"You do not attract into your life what you want..you attract into your life what you are."

From your description of him and the way he treated his wife I would imagine that he probably practiced being a kind person throughout his life. To me, it is amazing to think that maybe, just maybe because of a random act of kindness he may have done somewhere in his past the universe arranged it so you could be where you were on that day to be kind to him.

In the eyes of God there are no "insignificant" acts of kindness and I would imagine that you my friend will find alot of random acts of kindness coming your way.

Koz that's an awesome story brother. It reminds of the times I've done that where I live and get the same feeling you got. Where I live people seem to forget about the majority of our population here and disregard them as just the old farts that get in our way. I try to never forget  that without them there wouldn't be a today.

The strange thing is that I NEVER go into that Dollar Store..... I was taking my son to get a haircut in town when I decided at the last second, literally, to turn into that parking lot. I was in a hurry so it was even a little strange that I even noticed these folks since I wasn't even parked near them.

Good points by all.  We need to definitely remember those that are older than we.  A little kindness can go a long way.

Great story, told by a great human being.   Thanks for the story and the reminder that if each of us would just be kinder everyone around us that this would be a great world.
