Title: Not bald yet, but maybe soon...
Post by: Russ Wheeler on July 25, 2009, 11:30:37 PM
Hey guys, just wanted to introduce myself, seems like a real positive group here, happy to be a part of it.
A little about myself, I'm a young guy, mid 20's...for the last year or so I've been clipping my own hair, number 3 or 4...

A few months ago I went into work after a fresh haircut and the guys started laughing at me, saying that I must have knicked a spot in the back of my head without the guard on. To my amazement they seemed correct, however the spot seemed to grow and grow, and another one appeared on the other side of my head. According to my doctor I've developed alopecia areata, which is a condition that basically causes random hair-loss. Worst case scenario I could lose all of the hair on my body, best case it grows back within a year.

The spots are hard to notice, I have my hair a little longer now which for the most part covers them up entirely, I still get questioned on them though, and with the potential for loss of all of my hair has me started to contemplate beating nature to the punch and shaving it all off.

At first I had a lot of difficulty with the idea, I've always really liked my hair. I believe that I would be less attractive to women, which was really my only concern (ha, a tad shallow, I know). And I do know this is completely false, if you've ever read the book 'The Game', you know bald guys can be devastating when it comes to women.

Fortunately my line of work is very supportive and encouraging of 'high and tight' hair cuts, so theres no pressure on that side. I'm having a hard time envisioning myself being completely bald, i've had haircuts with clippers and no guard before, just not completely slick.

I'm starting to come to terms with the fact that by the end of this year I may be entirely bald, but if so, it will be of my own decision. Right now I've had quite a bit of hair re-growth, but the spots still are there, which creates the potential for them to enlarge and multiply. A shaved head would entirely solve the problem. At this point, I'm just waiting to see what happens.

Anyways, thats my story, I'm more of a reader than a poster, just thought I'd say hi, and perhaps meet some people with similar issues (not problems, cancer and AIDS are problems, hair loss is a minor issue).

Thanks!

Hello Russ.  So glad you joined in on our discussions.  I am sorry for you condition but hair is notall that important.  Just an accessory. Sort of like jewelry. I too have been struck by mother nature.  I was given the hair that can only be described as an explosion in a Brillo pad.  You can't imagine all the flack I received over the years.  I had enough of it about nine months ago.
I'm as slick as can be.  I still get some negative remarks, but I can live with it.  I made this decision and love it.  All I can say in regards to your slight inconvenience, just shave it.  If you like it--more the better.  If you don't, in a very short while you can grow it back.  It is not permanent.  Best of luck on your decision.  Please keep us posted

First off, welcome to the forum! You sound to me like you know exactly what you want to do. I really think that if you've buzzed it with no guard then you've been sooooo close. One more little step and it's shaved and you can see how you like it. It''s a little step but the results are huge. A shaved head feels so fine that you'll never want to go back!

Also I love your remark at the end, "hair loss is a minor issue" man with that attitude you got it made!!! My advice, shave it off!!!!
