Hi everyone. I posted my first post in another forum, but I'll just post the basic ideas here again :p
My name is Shaun and I'm 16 and Korean :D
My mom's dad is bald, my dad is bald, and my dad's dad is bald, not to mention all of my uncles.
Since I was 13 or so, I figured that I would start to go bald to one day, and the process begun quite early for me at 15. I'm 16 now and I have a pretty receded hairline and a crown that's just starting to open. My hair is thinning considerably and I'm confident that I'll have the full MPB effect by the time I'm 20. I mentioned in the other forum that I want to shave my head, but I can't because of my parents. I live in a neighborhood with quite a few "Asian thugs", so my parents believe shaving or buzzing my hair would project the image of that sort of behavior. Because of that, I am stuck with the horrible look of a balding man, and in high school it's not a great look :x! I decided not to try any remedies or hair regrowth things because I'm not confident that anything will work and I'm happy to accept who I am and will be.
So, here I am. Look forward to sharing my experiences with you guys.

Welcome Shaun. I've been SLY for 3 weeks now and even without the 30 day test I already love the look. It's too bad that you're in a neighborhood that has 'Asian Thugs' and by shaving your head, you might be mistaken for one of them or hassled by them. I kind of understand that feeling since I'm in Japan and anyone with an unnatural baldness is presumed to be a 'skinhead'.
I think at age 16, you can start adventuring into something new. It'll help shape how you will become later in life when you are faced with challenges. Try reasoning with your parents. I don't think they know how it'll actually look or affect you until you actually do it. Summer vacation is around the corner is it not? Ask them if you can do it for a week or two.. even just buzzing it down.
I went through the first week thinking "oh no, everyone's looking at my head" and that people are laughing or smirking at me. But after that first week, I realized it was all in my head and even if they were laughing at me, I know I have something they don't; and that's an open mind. Post some pics, you might not look like a thug, instead might end up looking like an asian monk =).

Hi Shaun,
perhaps it would be acceptable for you and your family to get at least a short buzzcut.
Good luck.

You sound like you have a good handle on life. Respect for your parents and hanging out with the right people is a great start. Those that know you will look beyond your hair style if they are worth having as friends.
Good luck and keep us posted.

O0 if people want 2 believe i'm a "thug" that's there problem. i say do what U like & please yourself. please... don't give in 2 that stereo-type of "every" asian guy with a bald head is a "thug". :Xo! :Xo! :Xo! >:( >:( >:(
heck... if U shave your dome, U can "show" them that U R no thug. anyways... i hope that your parents can understand your point of view. whenever, one has the "thoughts" of shaving their dome... one will never ever B satisfied until that person "takes the plunge".

After some debate, I've gotten my parents to agree to go down to let me buzz to a #8 cut, which is still pretty long, but a start I suppose. Still looks pretty bad, but better nonetheless.
-
Welcome Shaun. Buzzing it down is a good start. You may want to go out and buy a trimmer (like a Wahl or something similar.) Then, you can slowly buzz it shorter and shorter. Start off with the #8, like your parents have said. Then, maybe go a little shorter the next time (like a #6.) Take your time and get comfortable with the short haircut. I think that your parents will get used to it also.
In all honesty, about 90% of the time, we'd all tell you to go ahead and shave it. However, you have some pretty unique circumstances. You gotta do what is best for you, your family, and your safety. So, take your time. You're young and you've got a lot of life ahead of you. There are much worse things in life than losing your hair. So, just get it to the point where you are happy and then go out and have fun. When you're ready, shave it sly and be a proud SBG.
Good luck.

well done on reaching a compromise with your parents. I'm sure with time that you will eventually be able to have it completely your way, but atleast you are being sympathetic and respective to their wishes at the moment.
Bem75 has got some wise words there for you, there is a lot ahead for you in your life and the balding isn't an inhibition unless you allow it to be. The guys on here are ready to offer adive or pearls of wisdom if you do run into any roadblocks along the way.
