I had a big party at my house for 4th of July and we were swimming, cooking, blowing stuff up, and drinking a lot of beer. About once an hour, someone would say something about my bald head. As a note, everyone loves it and I rarely get anything but very nice compliments. Every comment this weekend was very positive.
One commen, though, was a bit of a backhanded compliment. So, one of the party guests says to me, "I really like your bald head. Bald heads don't really look good with skinny bodies. So, it's a good thing that you're kinda fat."
All I could do was laugh. I was thinking, "hey, thanks for the compliment on the head, but what's up with flat out calling me fat?"
No need to say anything about the comment. I know that I'm overweight and I often talk openly about it. So, I was not insulted. A few people looked at me, like they were waiting for a reaction, but I just laughed it off.
I thought that it was funny enough to post on here. Hope that you all had a great 4th of July weekend. Mine was a blast!

That's straight up rude. From your avatar, you don't even look fat. And I know skinny guys that look awesome with a bald head. Your "friend" is socially stupid.
-
Nothing ticks off a would-be insulter more than refusing to be insulted.
My "Opinionated Walrus" handle has just such an origin. On another forum I had the gall to have a different opinion than another poster. He took great umbrage to this and called me an "opinionated walrus" meaning for it to be a slur against my girth and facial fur.
It must peeve him to no end that I thought it was hilarious and now use it as my handle on that forum (and elsewhere).
Oh yeah, your "friend" was being a tool.

You don't even look overweight to me. Sounds like the beer was talking.

Hey thanks, GA!
But according to the "charts" I'm morbidly obese and need to lose 60 pounds. Sha! But that's another topic entirely...

im an extremely skinny bald guy. hmmmmm....so THATS why everyones been staring at me haha.
-
If it was said in good humour, from a close friend, I would laugh!!

Like you, I went to a neighbor's cook out for the 4th. His soon to be brother-in-law was a real jerk. He called me Baldie all day, but thanks to you guys, I was equipped with come-backs each time. I never gave him the satisfaction of knowing how much he pi$$ed me off.
-
Yeah, you really don't look fat to me. People are idiots anyway. Most of them are so insecure they just hate when they see a confident guy, so they have to throw in a couple of dumbass remarks.
-
Can you say "no party invite" next year. :*))
-
It takes all kinds. But if he is a close friend I would chalk it up as the beer talkin. From your photo you don't look fat to me. Now me, I am fat. LOL!
-
people....you just want to put them all in a bag and toss them over the edge.
-
So what if you are fat??? STill a very rude comment.

You should have called him "Dickie" all day and when he asked why you were calling him that you could have said, "Well you're calling me Baldie because I have a bald head so I'm calling you Dickie because you're a Dickhead". ;)

I think Mike and I will have a battle of the insults when we get to LA. lol I am sure I will loose though

Okay, I have to admit to something. At first, I took the comment pretty well and just blew it off. However, a few days went by and it kind of hit me and my insecurity kicked in a bit. I am a bit pudgy and I am way out of shape. So, the comment kinda kicked me into gear and I started eating better. I have not lost any weight yet, but I am cutting back on beer and eating less fried food.
So, yes, it was an insult and pretty rude of him to say at my party. However, it has helped jump-start me towards losing some weight and getting healthier.
He'll get an invite back because I have known the guy for almost 30 years and he is a close friend. He's not usually one to throw out a sideways insult like that. So, maybe it was the beer talking or just a "foot in mouth" moment.

Hey Bear, I know what you're talking about with the "charts". According to the BMI (Body Mass Index) as used by the National Institute of Health, I'd have to weigh 183 pounds to be in the high end of the "normal" health range. I'm 6' tall and weigh 205 pounds. So, according to this scale, I'm 22 pounds overweight. Could I stand to lose a few? Sure, but 22 pounds? I'd look terrible. Those stupid "charts" don't even consider other factors like body composition.
I like Koz's "Dickie" comment.
-
I like the Dickie comment too...if it comes around I might have to use it haha.

100% agree about those charts. They are stupid. I am 5' 10" and I weigh 195. I am down from about 210 a year ago, when I was admittedly way overweight. But that stupid chart says that I should be under 174. I would look ridiculous at 174. I'm a big guy, for my height. I'll never be one of those skinny Lance Armstrong body types.
I have one interesting thing with my weight. I gained 40 lbs during my freshman year of college. I weighed 145 when I graduated from high school and I came home a year later at 185 and in the best shape of my life. I still feel that is my ideal weight.

Sharpen the sword old boy, sharpen the sword..........

Those charts take into account everything that is important to the insurance companies that make up those stupid charts, their PROFITS... ...the more people they can classify as obese, the more people they can charge extra premiums.
Back to the thread...
Insults are never funny. It is not surprising that you got upset after thinking about it for a while. I hope your resolve to be healthier continues to work for you.

If you ever feel fat...stand next to me!
