Alright guys, I need some honest opinions here. I decided to grow a goatee and I'm getting some odd reactions from people. Nobody has said anything negative, but a few have been sorta indifferent. My dad still hasn't said a word about it. So, I'm wondering if it looks bad.
It's only been two weeks. So, it still has some time to fill in. Anyways, here's a pic of my new goatee. What do you think? Not sure that I am attaching a pic right. So, bear with me.
-
I think it looks good, especially with your bald head.
-
Well you'll get a rough idea in 30 days (the sly rule), but to really know how it is going to be, 3 months. I did it, I'm not only keeping the goat and stache, I'm growing out the extensions. And letting it go natural grey--that's a real trip.
Beards are "growing" hair, shaving is "cutting". It takes longer to see what the growth really looks like once you get a handle on trim length etc. that best suits your beard density and face. Think of it as a new type of love handle. So far it looks like a good start O0--don't waste it.
-
I think it looks great. Give it a chance to grow in some more before you make a decision, but it looks like a keeper to me.
-
Keep it. O0
-
the goatee pick is awesome. Keep it for sure
-
Looks good to me dude O0
-
Dude.... it's going to look great once you let it grow in more. O0 O0 O0
-
It looks awesome. I can't believe you're on the fence. Keep it.
-
I'm with the other guys.... I think it's a keeper.
-
Give it time. Facial hair can easily take 2 or 3 months to look presentable.
-
Looks good, keep it. O0
-
Looks great to me, and as usual, I'm jealous because I can't grow anything in the middle under the lip to the chin. I am not a fan of regular moustaches, but I've joked with my wife about growing a handlebar because the goat doesn't look right... she didn't find anything humorous about my idea. :(
-
Keep it! It looks really good.
-
keep it. O0
WARHAWK O0

Looks great!
-
agreed...looks good man. My vote is keep it. I'm considering going down to a goatee as well...
-
Thanks guys. My wife hates the goatee (all facial hair, for that matter), but loves the bald head. So, she says that she can live with it. I'm going to give it a couple of months and see how it goes. It is hard to tell in the picture, but the left side does not connect as well as the right side. So, it is a little lopsided, right now. I've had a full beard before and it does eventually connect and look a little more even.
Anyways, thanks for the support guys. Much appreciated.
-
I think it looks great on you. of course I've had a moustache for the past 33 years, so I might not be totally objective! but I'd keep it !
-
I think it looks great on you bro! O0
Keep it...but the "Mr. Clean" look works well too! ;)
-
Looks good!
-
Looks good!
I agree with the 'keepers' ! O0
-
Dude, it looks good either way, but I'm partial to goatees. You rock the look!
-
Keep it! O0

looks great

Keeper
-
looks good, just give it a few more weeks, I just started shaving my head & get all sorts of reactions. Just hang in there
-
I kept the goatee and it looks really good now. Amazingly, the two people who did not like my shaved head actually like the goatee and sly combo. They both gave me compliments.
I have gotten very nice compliments from everyone. So, I think that the Goat is here to stay for a while.
The only negative is that my wife hates it. I mean she really hates it. I'm just hanging in there and hoping that she'll grow to like it. She's really cool though and she understands that my happiness with my appearance is more important than her approval.
-
My wife always hates my goatee too. (I shave it off sometimes, just for her.) But when I grow it, after some time, she gets used to it. She's a keeper if she's cool with you keeping it despite her dislike. O0
-
looks awsome to me. my vote is for keepin it.
-
keep it keep it keep it! :popo

The stache part was driving me crazy. So, I shaved it yesterday and just left the chin fur. I liked the full goatee look, but I could not stand the lip whiskers. Plus, my wife was basically refusing to kiss me.

...reason enough. But too bad as it really did look good on you. Maybe you'll give it another shot sometime.
-
Did you try trimming the stache down? Sometimes it might not look right if you use the beard trimmer and cut it down too far, but it's worth a shot. Usually I'd grow mine so that all the stach hairs grew down to the top of my lip and I would trim it with scissors there. But that makes it really full, and might not look right on certain people. Now I think I'm going to keep it trimmed down. It looks cooler on my with it's no so long.

I don't have the thickest of facial hair (#$*&# genes) but even I have problems with the lip whiskers. I think the problem is that it's an extremely flexible piece of skin that's constantly stretching and moving round and as the hairs get longer and longer they rub against each other and across the skin. I've found that if I let the hairs grow until they reach the upper lip the hairs drive me nuts. The worst are the hairs at the corner of the mouth.
If I trim the mustache to 1/4" of an inch I find it's still long enough to be a mustache but the hairs don't drive me nuts. I barely even notice them to be honest.

Pity. I thought the full goatee was a better look.
Never quite sure about the chin only look.
Try just keeping it trimmed a bit shorter.

As I posted earlier, a goat, stache or no, is a lengthly process. It's three months in my case until I saw what it really was going to be given the variables of density of growth, and the stiffness of the beard and stache hair. Now that I've passed 5 months, I trim the goat to a #4 comb on the clippers, but I'm letting the stache hairs grow by in large. First of all they seem to have a slower growth rate, and second, to get a fuller look, it's essential to have longer hair. I brush it to the sides to keep it out of my mouth and snip off any hairs that won't go along with the program.
I've determined, and I'd like some long timers to chime in on this, that the character of the goat and the stache get softer the longer the beard and stache are and the longer it's been growing. I shampoo and ocndition daily w/ Main and Tail.
It's just my experience, but the take away is that you can be Sly in 15 minutes, it takes 3 months and more to get a mature and enjoyable stache and goat.
Anyone else have any length of beard and time to develop experience to share here?
-
I have had a moustache and/or beard for almost 24 years. And I would agree with SaintC..... the longer the facial hair the softer it is.
I keep my stache and goat trimmed to a #5 on my Wahl beard trimmer which equates to about 3/8". Sometimes trim it to longer lengths but never shorter.
I shampoo with Bluebeards Original Beard Wash and use their Beard Saver leave-in conditioner. This makes the facial hair soft and has helped eliminate the dry skin issues I had on my chin.
SaintC is very wise.
BEM75: I like the goat on you but I think I prefer it w. a stache. However it is your choice, you have to do whatever makes YOU the happiest.

I think your new look is awesome!
-
u look fine.
-
I almost think that you look younger and immature with just the beard portion.
And with the Goatee you look more like a cop our bodyguard or something. So a tougher look.
Id say keep the goat
-
Looking younger isn't such a bad thing!
-
It looks very good, suits your face, With out it you would be baby faced, As long as you like it thats all that matters.
-
I like it both ways: the tash looked good, but the goat on its own looks okay to me too...but then, I would say that I guess, seeing as that's my look at the moment too!! 8)
-
My wife hates it. I mean she really hates it. She didn't like it with the stache either.
I finally got it looking a little more even. It was pretty lopsided before. However, I'm still getting negative comments from family and friends. So, I'm not sure how long it will last. I'm only hanging on because I like it. I guess that is what matters most.
I had a full beard about two years ago and I really liked that. You can imagine how much my wife hated it, though. My friends also said that I looked like a terrorist. So, I shaved it.
I'm going to experiment with the goat a bit, but I'm afraid that its days are numbered. At some point, my wife's opinion is going to start to matter.
-
Just got to remind you, it's about what you like, and she should respect that. I can appreciate what you're going through though as I've often posted, my wife hates the haircut, but oddly--doesn't mind the chin mitten.
It's been rightly suggested by other brothers that this is your thing, and that our wives don't seem to ask us about their personal appearance matters. Does she ask you about what makeup to wear? How to style her hair? What color lipstick? If not, until she does, keep the fuzz-- >:D >:D >:D
-
Right on, Brother! She just got her haircut yesterday and never asked which style I think that she should get. In fact, she got a style that I don't like. Do I dare say that? No freakin way!

Well I don't want to cause the outbreak of WWIII in your household, but it is a point when she hauls off and starts crabbing about the chin mitten. Let her strike first, once she's pitched the ball over the plate--KNOCK IT OUT OF THE PARK. O0 Then duck. :D
-
Ugh. Why do I get the impression the goat is doomed? ::)
People usually ask me why I'm single and why I don't want a girlfriend or wife. My answer is that I don't have one because I'd rather be happy. I really can't stand the whining, nagging, irrational bul...er...bovine-poop that women make you deal with 23 hours a day so that you can have a little fun in the other.
For what it's worth, I tend not to like the chin only ones but yours looks really good. You're going to need to post a photo of the full goatee in order to do any comparisons.
-
Damn! And I thought I was the only guy in America that was happy to be single! Even girlfriends don't get the concept of "ME time". When I find a woman that doesn't want to talk for at least three consecutive days a week and does not try to force her will upon me, I will have found the perfect woman.

When I think about all my friends who sit around a complain about what their girlfriend or wife is making them do I seriously wonder why anyone would bother. I have personally seem then getting their a** handed to them over the dumbest of things. The women I know usually complain about their guy in ways that boil down to the fact that he's not listening to their demands.
Then the most amusing thing is that these people seem to want to destroy happiness whereever they see it. They constantly want to hook me up with someone and I want to say "Gee, thanks for offering to give me someone who will tell me what to wear and tell me what to do but I'm happy being single!"
When I find a woman that doesn't want to talk for at least three consecutive days a week and does not try to force her will upon me, I will have found the perfect woman.
A friend of mine dated a deaf girl who could read lips. He loved it, he could play music as loud as he wanted in the car and didn't have to speak to her while driving.
-
A deaf mute? I gotta get me one of those! ;D
-
Hey, as far as I can tell it looks real good
-
A deaf mute? I gotta get me one of those! ;D
She was deaf, but knew how to talk (unfortunately). She read lips so in order to speak she needed to be able to see his lips so that meant he could drive in peace at night because it was either dark or too difficult since he's be facing the road and not her. But, yea, that's pretty damn handy! Though in our case she'd probably say "Can you shave your beard? I can't hear what you're saying with that hair!"
-

I just noticed you had a photo with the mustache in the original post of this thread. I don't know if it's because the hair was just stubble in that pic or what, but I think the chin-only goat looks best. I rarely think that way and usually think that chin-only goats look kinda silly but yours really looks good that way.
-

That's what George Costanza once said .... :-\

A goatee is a great accent for a bald head. If you're getting strange reactions, it's because people aren't used to seeing it. I think it looks good. Neatly trimmed.

When I finally take the plunge and shave it off I'm hoping I look as good as you man! My problem is that my chin whiskers are fused with grey hairs now; the only place on my head where I have grey hairs. I wish I could have nice thick, black growth like yours. It looks great!
-
Looks good, definitely wait until it fills in before you make a decision to keep it or lose it. It's probably just the angle, but it looks low your goatee might be a little wide.
I'm probably wrong, to be honest I'm jealous of your goatee, I'm trying to grow one.
-
Looks good,man.
Go for it!
-
I'm obviously biased but I think it looks great.
