Title: Is this typical
Post by: nor_cal on June 01, 2009, 12:09:23 PM
I go back and forth between growing my hair off and keeping it shaved smooth.  Are there others of you out there who do this?  If so, how often do you go between looks?  Why can't I committ to one look or the other?

Thanks for the help.

nope...once i shaved it all off...it has stayed off.  Never any question in my mind.  After 2 years of doing it, it is almost like second nature.  Good Luck

Ain't typical here either.  Most it grows is for two days when I get really busy or am hunting.  Otherwise, slick and sly.

It could be normal for you.  My brother-in-law does this all the time.  Probably spends 6 months shaved and 6 months grown out.

What's typical?
It seems that the notion of cycling between being sly and letting the hair grow out implies that we, here in the SBG forum, are creatures of not only one mind but also of one schedule. Personally, I have been sly since 2000-01(?), and I have periods of letting the hair grow out and periods of scraping my skull. The vast majority of the time I am smooth of skull but, for whatever reason, I have periods when I let it go. It never has gotten longer than a "2" guard (1/4") since I started shaving because the crest of my dome is smooth by nature (well, almost: way more skin than hair).
IMO this whole sly thang has more to do with individuality than typicality (yes, I made that word up.....I think?). We just have a group of fine and like-minded souls here in SBG, each of us is a beautiful and unique little snowflake who happened to lite here in the forum.

I'm normally an every other day shaver, but yeah sometimes I will go a stretch every couple of months or so. I'm actually in a stretch right now after going out of the country on business for a week and then pulling a 65+ hour week at the office. Sometimes it just gets hard to shave my head every day and I especially don't like to have to bring additional stuff with me when I travel. And once it gets a certain length you gotta buzz it off before going sly so that takes additional time to boot.

But after like two weeks I usually hit a point where I get real ancy about my hair again and its either time to get a haircut or shave it off...and I refuse to pay for a haircut at this point, so off it goes.

Every once in awhile I get like that when I dont shave for close to a week then a thought might get into my head of just regrowing my hair but I start thinking about haircuts and all that hair stuff like not showering for a couple days and having nasty hair, it would annoy me. After that thought I grab the clippers and all and scrape it down.

I know many guys that shave starting around March/April and keep it shaved until around October, they have done that for ages it seems.

I typically shave every other or every three days.  I seem to get a better shave it I let it come in some.
If I let it go much longer than that, my wife starts commenting on it.  "You are going to shave that, right?"

same here as GAslick and rodubls. i'll go in phases...every day currently, because it's really hot here. but not opposed to a 2-3 day break now and then especially in cooler weather. the shave you get after those 3 days max is even closer than the daily one so it can be worth the wait.

Negative, I stay slick, I don't plan on growing my hair back anytime soon.

Every now and then I'll let it go for two or three days, but never more than that.  Been strictly sly for a full year now.

Not typical here. I shave every day but I'm also known to take a day or two off once in a while. But, I never let it grow long enough that I have to use clippers before shaving!

I usually let the stubble come in.  Often times I'll go a week without shaving.

I think it depends on if you have enough hair to grow.  If you do, go for it.  If not, stay sly.

Yeah, I've been there, done that.  I shaved it for the first time in July 2005 and kept if for three months before letting it grow out back to a flat.  That lasted for about 6 months and then I shaved it off again in May 2006 but didn't like it for some reason and only kept it shaved for a week before letting it grow back to a flat.  Kept the flat for quite a while and then last sprint decided I was going to let that grow out.  That went on for about three months and then I went back to the flat and kept it until May 16 of this year.  On May 16th I took my son for a haircut and got myself my first barbershop head shave.  It was ok having the barber do it but I can't believe that I spent $17 plus a tip for something that I could have easily done myself.  Anyway, I've been Sly for about 2 1/2 weeks now, mostly shaving the dome every other day, every day the last five, and I'm loving it!  I don't know how long it will last this time but I'm thinking at least through the summer, perhaps longer than that.  :-\

I used to go back and forth a lot in the beginning.  And I always hated myself for it once the hair was grown back in.   Observing the 30 day rule helps a lot; it takes that long for the bald image in the mirror to become your "regular" look.  And of course, over the course of time, you have more of an incentive to stay shaved when less hair grows back.   ;)
