Title: Condescending article
Post by: Accepted on June 21, 2012, 04:46:38 PM
Does anyone else think this is a horribly written and overly condescending article?

It's kind of stupid and backward in its logic.  Let's assume that writer's basic premise is right: hair is there to preserve heat and protect us.  Then centuries ago, human beings must have been hairier as a way of conserving body temperature.  Over time, the need for lots of hair would diminish because man developed other mechanisms like central heating to compensate for the need for warmth.  Wouldn't that lead one to conclude that a bald man has simply achieved a greater degree of evolution?

Who cares what the article says. Bald heads are clean and sexy, IMO. As a GSG, I like the look on me and other men who sport it.  O0

The haters are just jealous...

Negative Comments, statements and opinions only strengthen my persuit of a smooth shiny pate.  Forums like this make the opinions in articles like that meaningless.  Bald Rocks!

No....not even close. I change mine once a month when I just want to keep 'em guessing. It's perfectly normal IMO

I tried doing this but my camera broke!

I thought the article was pretty well written as far as composition, spelling, etc. I don't know anything about the person who wrote the article but my general belief is that people who comment negatively about entire groups of people with whom they have no real familiarity do this as a form of self-comfort. It insulates against the chill of a wasted life.

People often seem to misunderstand evolution.  A trait isnt selected out simply because it causes a problem.  Traits are selected out  when they decresse the likelihood of reproducing (thus decreasing the likelihood of that gene being passed down to future generations).

Even if you assume that baldness offers some disadvantage (whether its being less attractive to a mate or dying from scalp melanoma), I would assume for most men baldness would kick in AFTER the age where they would typically father children.  Therefore baldness's alleged ill-effects would not prevent to be baldies from passing on their genes.

Whoever wrote the article is assuming before the fact that baldness is maladaptive, then searching for justification for this assumption (despite admitting that evolutionarily speaking, baldness does not appear to be maladaptive).  The author eventually changes tune and starts theorizing reasons why baldness may be a positive adaptation (which seems more supported by the evidence... although Id still argue that a predisposition toward baldness probably has no bearing on reproduction at all).

Based on the article's begrudging conclusion, it probably should have been titled "Why Arent Men with Hair all Dead?"  I wont hold my breath on that one. Haha
